Zone Zeal Year in Review
Last year someone ran a thread nominating different teams for awards of the 2001 game such as best bridge balancer, best large ball collector, etc...so its time for the 2002 Nominations
Vote for: Best Bot of 2002 Fastest Bot Best Ball Collector Best Single Goal Grabber Best Dual Goal Grabber Best Triple Goal Grabber Strongest Pulling/Pushing Bot Best Hybrid (Ball Collector/Goal Grabbing Bot) Best looking bot Add more as you think of them... |
Best Triple Goal Grabber
Strongest Pulling/Pushing Bot It may be a little biased since I didn't see most of the other teams in action but I would have to say 71 had both of these qualities. They were only broken once. |
these are my ideas on the best of 2002..
Best Bot of 2002 - Team 71 Best Ball Collector - Team 224 Best Dual Goal Grabber - Team 60 Best Triple Goal Grabber - Team 71 Strongest Pulling/Pushing Bot - Team 60 Best Hybrid (Ball Collector/Goal Grabbing Bot) - Team 121 Best Looking Paint Job - Team 263 (before the matches of course :D ) |
Best Bot of 2002 - Team 173
Best Ball Collector - Team 95 Best Dual Goal Grabber - Team 60 Best Triple Goal Grabber - Team 71 Strongest Pulling/Pushing Bot - Team 45 Best Hybrid (Ball Collector/Goal Grabbing Bot) - Team 121 |
fastest - Team 60
best dual goal grabber - Team 60 Biggest wheels - Team 696 |
Quote:
|
Best Hybrid- 47
Tripple Goal- 71 PS: Even though we all envy (and slightly dislike) 71 because they won twice, i give them A LOT of credit for their robot design. It was one of the best. NOTE: this last statement was NOT ment to offend anyone. PPS: Did ANY other bot handel 3 goals? |

There were but I dont think many were ever able to grab 3. |

And Moe was able to handle three goals |
Um... Team 384 handeled 3 goals...

Change of vote: Biggest wheels to 263.
Ours were 10 inch, the biggest in LA. |

I nominated 121, 95, and 175 all because we didn't have any ball capabilities this year and every time I saw these robots in action it just amazed me. I nominated 25 because they are just awesome! You guys rule and are extremely good at what you do. Thanks for all you helped us accomplish this year. My vote for 71 is self explanitory. 190 Should receive votes for best sitting bot. Once they got ahold of the goals they were going to sit and watch, and you really had to work to do anything about it. (apologies again for the breaking of your arm) The vote for 173 is another obvious one. Coolest looking robot goes to 263 I hope it's right, and they are the Campbell Soup team from N.J. You have to go look them up, and just see the design, you'll get a luagh and be purly amazed. Best mini-bot, and I am trying to do this completely unbaised, but sorry I have to do it, because I believe it is true is team 84. If you haven't seen it in action be sure to catch a glimpse of 'Moose' this fall. I will attempt to attach a picture, but it is truly amazing. Moose weighs in at a hefty 9 lbs. and is a 4" mini-bot with antlers and a tail. The tail lies flat on the floor and can not cause entanglement. Moose is fully controlable by a joystick, and the operator is 'crazy'. Moose is not afraid to attack robots larger than her, can push a goal, maneuver around balls, and out run robots. Moose is responsible for all of the awards that team 84 won this year, and specifically was awarded the Leadership In Control Award for her design, uniqueness, and controling. PLEASE, anyone who has ever competed with the 'Moose' or has seen the 'Moose' in action feel free to comment, or cast your vote for her. |

I mean, my team at the time, MOE, benefitted from it :D :D :D alot, but i mean, i think that 71 deserves some real credit for building sych great robots back to back

Re: Zone Zeal Year in Review
I nominate:
Best Bot of 2002: NO IDEA! No idea. Fastest Bot: 60 They were the fastest moving robot I saw this year. 18fps, wow'ish! Best Ball Collector: 95 Hands down! No other ball bot could scoop up 20 balls in ~5 seconds. Long live the popcorn popper. Best Single Goal Grabber: 66 :p Biased nomination.. I think its right, though. Best Dual Goal Grabber: 60 || 469 Team 60's and team 469's tenacious traction and ability to maneuver the goals once they latched onto them was amazing. Best Triple Goal Grabber: 71 Hands down! No other three goal grabber had the power, speed, and robustness of this machine (unless I missed something). Very impressive idea and implementation. Strongest Pushing Bot: 180 Dangerous robot. Saw videos of them at KSC showing the goal who was boss. Also got a personal demo during the Championship Event finals. These guys could push! Best Hybrid: 121   Yup... Best looking bot: 60 || That yellow robot with the silver arms Wasn't paying too much attention to the actual look of the robots at the competitions, but these two stood out in my mind. umm... Best Wheels: 151 I loved the wheels. Most Impressive Rookie Bot: 810 This robot could push! Yea, they broke a few times, but when they worked they looked awesome. |
Best Dual Goal Grabber=190
Best Triple Goal Grabber=71 Strongest Pulling/Pushing Bot=469 Best Hybrid (Ball Collector/Goal Grabbing Bot)=121 Best looking bot=60 Most exciting to watch=173 (their design was amazing) |
I was reading this thread, and wondering about how could each of you seen all of our robots? I know I didn't/couldn't even if I tried...
So I'm gonna offer a little change... What about from the regional(s) that you went to? I know some teams from CA didn't come to MI, so how would that be fair to judge the people that you didn't see? (I just wanna be fair to other teams that I/other people haven't seen...) |

are you sure about that? i really think this was thier first year...i could be wrong though
*checks in the book* what do you know....this was thier second year. heh |
We are currently in our third rookie year. It seems like every year more goes wrong and everything gets harder. It might be because we push ourselves so much but that actually might not be a bad thing.
|
My entry is based primarily on the KSC regional and the St. Louis regional (the 2 that we attended)
The best single goal and the fastest and the most powerful was SPAM team 180 Best ball handler hands down was BBS (Baxter Bomb Squad) Best 2 goal was Metal in Motion Team 343 (biased choice), my next choice if I couldn't vote for ourselves would be 267 (Demolition Squad) Honorable mention would be 312 (Heatwave) |
Re: Zone Zeal Year in Review
Best Bot of 2002 - A matter of opinion i think, mine being, i have no idea.
Fastest Bot - 60, hands down. The false start in the semi-finals, the closk reads 1:58 and they are at the goals, latched on. Best Ball Collector - 95, if you argue you never saw them in person Best Single Goal Grabber - 66, Never saw anyone do on goal so good. Someone said 180 for this, techniclly 180 didn't grab goals. They had a tounge thing they put between the pipes. They couldn't back up with a goal. If im wrong please correct me Best Dual Goal Grabber - 60, again see them in person. Best Triple Goal Grabber - 71, duh Strongest Pulling/Pushing Bot - 71 had unbelivable pushing power but since it wass only forward, im gonna vote based on overall, so it goes to 66 Best Hybrid (Ball Collector/Goal Grabbing Bot) - 121, can do it all, quiclky, efficently, smoothly. Best looking bot - 38, nonnebots. The little green-ish puple-ish tank with a wicked nice polycard body. Beautiful paint job. The othe bots that desrve recognition: 95 - they blew me away that much 66 - I cannot describe the wonders they did for us this year. 157 - Although we were never with them, they helped our strategy develop so much 716 - They really gave us a run for our money in NE and at Nats 810 - Great bot, too bad they had problems 175, 47, 45, 64, 311, 180, 467, 28, 88, 190, 237, 155 i think that cover alot |

Ohhhh....everyone loved our tethering device! It was strips of aluminum that had tons of speed holes in them, folded up like an accordian. Everyone asked what it was and we told them it was a cheese grater (yes, everything goes back to cheese)

Check out the videos of KSC regional on soap108's website (if they're still there) where we pushed the goal and 2 robots over a bunch of soccer balls - won the incredible play award. You can see the mechanism pretty well in that. |

Re: Zone Zeal Year in Review
One of my favorite threads from 2001 returns :) Here are my picks:
Best Bot of 2002 So many bots that were good in so many areas. I won't go out on a limb and pick a single bot. Fastest Bot 180 - While scouting them I watched a few of their matches and was always impressed with their speed, about 2 secs to the goal. What impressed me even more was that they held a goal in the goal zone until ~1 sec left on the clock and still coasted back to the endzone. Best Ball Collector 95 - I never saw them in person, but the video was absolutely amazing, a whole line of balls in 5-10 secs. wow Best Single Goal Grabber 180 - fast, powerful, and anxious to mix it up with other bots and push them around. Exactly what I'm looking for in a single goal grabber. Best Dual Goal Grabber Tie between 60 & 469 - Both exremely fast and powerful bots who could rotate the goals on a turret which allowed them to pull opponents across the field at will. I still wish they went head-to-head once. Best Triple Goal Grabber 71 - no debate, no explination necessary. Hands down the best 3 goal grabber. Strongest Pulling/Pushing Bot 71 - You could try to push against them, pull them back, anything, but if they got their walkers down they'd just shuffle to the goal zone and bring everything with. Best Hybrid (Ball Collector/Goal Grabbing Bot) 173 - I only saw them in person from afar, but their speed at picking up and deposting balls impressed me. Not sure how well they controlled a goal though. Other mentionables: 45, 67, 111 :D, 121 Unfortunately it's been too long since the FIRST season and I know I forgot to mention some bots that deserve it. Mike |

Thank you :) Many of the nonnebots are still um... not quite right.. after 1) melting the polycarb mold 4 different times, 2) spraypainting in an enclosed, low ventilated environment, and 3) putting up with over 120 degree heat in that enclosed environment while melting the shell with propane heaters and heat guns. It's nice to know we're remembered, especially by the 2002 Champions who beat us in quarterfinals at the NE regional ;) Would have been a very interesting outcome had the lego maniac's bot not blown a fuse :) |

Since we always get left out of these things (Our robots never seem to have any 1 specific feature to reall stand out) so I propose a new category.
Coolest pneumatic hissing noise: Team 108, when we deploy our wings |
i know
new catagory: Coolest looking exension pole:87's VI-ARM |
Extension
There were a lot of good extensions around here in Philly...
Chuck- Moose sure could do everything 87- What a pole- the first time I saw it I thought you were gonna crack the plexiglass separating the drivers and the field right in half 487- dang- your extension shoots out in like a second- at the Duel on the Delaware I thought it was broken or something then just when the timer read 0:01- bang- |
I'm really surprised. Especially with the folks who have posted from 121. Nobody has even mentioned 839 as even worth an honorable mention for the Best Rookie. Remember River Rage, we beat you (teamed with 190) and then at Bash @ the Beach, we won with you (and 155) over 190 and their alliance! :D

Your robot was strong, and had a 469 like turn-table which made you master the goals with ease. Besides having a good robot, they also had a high-spirited team! Keep up the good work! |
