Double Rookie All-Star Club

5817 won Rookie All-Star at both the Central Valley Regional and the Orange County Regional this year. Are there any other teams out there that have accomplished this feat in their rookie years?

1885 did in 2006 - once at VCU and once at Palmetto. Got Champs RAS as well.

Congrats 5817 saw you win it twice in person , now fix that "swerve drive breaking at worst possible time" issue for Worlds :)

Also congrats to 2485 for winning the Engineering award twice as well.

Good luck to all the great teams from SD,CV and OC going to worlds!

In the IN District, we have 2 rookie teams. Both attended the same 2 events and 6012 won both Rookie AS. So I believe 6012 is the only one eligible team to compete for this award at INDCMPS. So they'll have 2 district Rookie AS awards and one DCMPS (or Regional) Rookie AS. (Correct me if I'm wrong on the DCMPS part ;))

Thankfully the swerve drive issues were fixed at this event. And I am happy to report we did not have a single swerve module fail on us. :)

You can add Wave Robotics to that list all the way back in 2009!

4930 did this at Buckeye and Finger Lakes in 2014.

Why is Rookie All-Star different from Chairmans, which can only be won once at a regional level per year? (I'm assuming this is from the old rule that teams could only present for Chairmans at one event?).

We could also add EI to that list as well.

Yeah... now you have main breaker issues. :p (TWICE???? C'mon, man, you should have replaced it after the first time...)

It's hard to fix it because we haven't been able to recreate it yet.

Main breaker was replaced, seems to be another issue...

We run hard on the practice field for over 5 minutes no problems at all. Going over defenses and running cycles, the motors get hot but the breaker never trips.

The practice bot we run hard in the shop for long durations, and still no breaker issues.

We get to the field and drive for about half the match, and the breaker trips......
Ahhhh

Don't know what the current draw is but, our electrical mentor checked and it did not seem that high. He is going to put a scope meter on the practice bot with the kids and try and figure this one out.

I'm going to get the kids working on some potential mechanical solutions for it.

Regardless we are moving the location of the breaker for sure.

Yeah this kind of irks me a bit too... Not to second guess a judges job, but spread the love a bit! Especially for a rookie award...

This is not at all meant to take away from the great job 5817 has done and they deserve to be at champs... but now one less rookie team will be there.

It seems like the wildcard generated from winning RAS twice should go to a rookie, but I don't know how you would decide which one. It would be easier to just limit it to one win per year, spread the wealth.

If you want to get technical, we generated the third and final wildcard at OCR this weekend, which gave the 2nd pick of the Finalist alliance a ticket to champs. The 2nd pick of alliance 2 was a rookie, so it all worked out in the end.

Ahhhh

We were having the same issue at our first event this year. After replacing a few breakers on the PDB and lowering the total output of our drive motors, it seemed to be fine. Hopefully all will stay fixed for next week.

Can't wait to meet the Uni-Rex team at Champs. Your robot, and your Jurassic Park reveal video, are awesome.

Regarding the 2x RAS Club, I'd hope FRC would always try to give it to a different team at a regional with a previous RAS winner (from the same season) unless there were only 2 rookies and one of them could never get their robot to turn on. Considering we won RAS at the Sacramento regional, I was most definitely rooting for another hard-working rookie team to win it at SVR.

Speaking of which, we couldn't be happier for Team 5940. It was a pleasure to have our pit right next to you, go up against you in eliminations, and watch your team go through the same incredible range of emotions we felt in Sacramento. Congratulations!

When I was on 3929, we had a pretty cool season. This was back before RAS and Rookie Inspiration were given out at the Division level. We lost Championship Rookie All Star to 3990. Definitely my proudest moment in FRC so far.

The Storm Robotics Team, FRC 2729, won it at the DC and Philadelphia Regional in 2009.

5586 only went to one regional but we were Rookie All-Stars at Wisconsin Regional and Curie-Carver Subdivision at World's.

Re: Double Rookie All-Star Club

Team 6153 won the RAS at the Rhode Island District Event, and we would have won it at the Pine Tree Event , but we were ineligible. (at the award ceremony, the speaker said that 6153 would have won, but because we already did we couldn't win twice) The speaker said that both of the teams that deserved it had already won it (5902 and 6153) and they couldn't give it out... even though there were two other rookie teams that hadn't earned it. So, I guess that they just didn't give out the RAS award? But 6153 would be in this club if we weren't in a district system.

I believe 6012 won rookie all star at both district events they went to here in Indiana. Kinda odd since both of the rookies in the state went to the same events and only one got the award.

I'm surprised that many rookie teams have the money to go to multiple competitions.

I was looking over the numbers for my state (Kansas) and this year of 22 teams, only four competed twice.

Whenever I talk about starting a FIRST team to new schools, money is the number one concern.

When you register a team in a district, you get 2 events.

Also, we were able to apply for generous grants from Apple & the Brin-Wojicki Foundation that basically covered the fees for 2 regionals, and for those that qualified at Sacramento, the fee to go to Champs. (Thank you Brin-Wojicki!!)

Those grants were incredible acts of kindness by both benefactors that Team 5924 will not soon forget.

Team 4543 The Illuminators from Apollo High School San Jose won RAS/Rookie High Seed at Central Valley and Silicon Valley in 2013.

Last 3 of 4 competitions we have made the semi's as Alliance Captains.
Won the Judge's award at Davis in 2014, 2015

Since Apollo is a continuation school every year we have a whole new team.

After Exploding Bacon won RAS at Orlando in 2006 we asked the judges at Lone Star to remove us from consideration for RAS there so another rookie would have the chance at Champs. This year our rookie team 5816 did the same thing in South Florida. I agree that it should be like Chairmans.

In our rookie year team 2771 won rookie all star at 4 events.

Coach#3536 12-04-2016 23:10

Re: Double Rookie All-Star Club

3536 was triple rookie all star in 2011. Kettering Ann Arbor and MSC. Best advice is to be humble and hopeful and confident. Try to do the things you see the teams you respect do.

Do one thing very well and document how and why. We hung the mini bot as one of first in the world that year that year. It got us to the worlds that year.

Day to day. Clean up wiring first we had no connection failures at any event. We haven't year to year. Many Veteran teams know and look for clean wires before alliance picks. If it looks like spaghetti there is a fault waiting to happen.

Have fun and don't get too focused on judging. It's important but Always talk to the judges not at them. They know when they are being given the company line and not what your team truly did.

Congrats to all the all stars listed. It shows you get it!

4930 got the double RAS their rookie year - and this was, if I recall correctly, despite asking judges at their second event to give it to another team!

1714 won double RAS their rookie year as well, and championship Rookie Inspiration.
