Top 5 Teams In Your State/Area before CHAMPS
What are the Top 5 teams in your state/area/country before CHAMPS? I'm interested to see what people think.

Re: Top 5 Teams In Your State/Area before CHAMPS
I am going to Long Island + NYC
1. 3419 2. 1796 3. 329 4. 694 5. 870 What is kind of funny is only 1 out of these 5 teams won a regional 3419 - Finalist at NYC winning the quality award and semi finalists at Tech Valley. They were the captain of their alliance both teams and have a very promising robot. If they can make their vision a bit more accurate between their uber fast shooter and pneumatic swerve they are in contention to be picked at worlds. 1796 - Despite 1796 not making it out of semi finals they were 1st pick at both NYC and SBPLI. They also won the gp award and the chairmans award. This is for a good reason. Their turret was awesome and they fought hard every match. 329 - The Mohawks kicked their season off at Utah where they got into semis, won the engineering inspiration award and had 2 deans list finalists. They then want on to SBPLI where they had a really strong playoff run in the end losing and becoming finalists while swooping up the gracious professionalism award. Their simple robust robot with a solid flashlight aiming system would be a good pick for any alliance. Maybe it is 329's year to get to Einstein. 694 - The only team on the list to actually win a regional Stuypulse put up strong showings at both their regionals. As the 2nd member of their alliance 694 was able to win the NYC regional and swooped up the engineering inspiration award. At South florida they had the hard 8th seed position especially as they were going up against teams like 179 and 2590 and lost in quarterfinals. But, they still left the regional with the entrepreneurship award in hand. 870 - Lastly team 870 team R.I.C.E. also put up a strong showing at SBPLI. They started off their season a little rough at Buckeye losing hard in quarterfinals but really showed their strength at SBPLI where they shined on the finalist alliance. They also won the engineering inspiration award. Remember these rankings are opinions and I would like to hear yours as well ;). |

Re: Top 5 Teams In Your State/Area before CHAMPS
MN
1: 5172 unstoppable everywhere they went. They can do 7 high goals, one in auto and a climb. 2. 2052 solid auto shot, averages about 5 high goals a match with no defense. 3. 2502 was a dominant high goal shooter at their first event, had major drive train issues at their second (they have already been fixed). They can do 6 high goals and a climb. 4. 3130 very close to 2052, but doesn't seem to be as consistent, they also have a climb 5. 2175 haven't watched enough of them, but people I trust won't stop talking about their performance at North Star. |
Re: Top 5 Teams In Your State/Area before CHAMPS
For MN, in terms of robots, in my opinion:
1:5172 2:2052 3:3130 4:2883 5:2175 In terms of awards (technical and non-technical); 1:2220 2:2052 3:2175 4:2502 5:5172 |

Here's my list for IN
Robot (High Goal Only): -1024 -1747 -868 -234 -1741 Robot (Low Goal Only): -71 -1529 -3947 -3940 -3559 Climbers: -4193 -71 -1501 Awards: -1741 -868 -1747 -6012 -461 |
For California (At least the regionals I've been to):
1)254 2)971 3)330 4)1678 5)1323 The only reason I put 1678 below 330 is consistency. When 1678 is making shots they sink them like there's no tomorrow, but there have been quite a few times where they bounce off the edges. Sent from my iPod touch using Tapatalk |

Not sure about the rest of NE, but for Connecticut:
1. 558 2. 195 3. 2067 4. 839 (MA, but competed with us in CT) 5. 177 A couple explanations: With several iterations to their robot, 558 has improved their robot consistently throughout the season, snatching two wins (Waterbury & Hartford), as well as a Chairman's at Hartford. They're a powerhouse this year. 195 continues its powerhouse streak, designing a beautiful and really effective robot. 177 this year has built one of those robots that caught my eye. A great shooter with its consistency, they're really good this year. |

From my point of view, the District model, due to the amount of matches we get to play, will give several teams that experience to also 'click' - 422 and 401 are ones I think are ready to make that leap - and had a couple of matches gone just slightly differently, you would have been hanging another blue banner on Saturday! |
Re: Top 5 Teams In Your State/Area before CHAMPS
Arizona Teams:
842: Winner in Vegas and Finalist at AZ North. Their outer works shooting and cheescaked climber are very impressive. 4183: Strong and consistent high goal shooting at AZ North and West made them finalists at both events. 2486: This speedy robot won San Diego. While still refining a high goal shot, consistent breaching has will take them far. 1011: Winner of Colarado with a fast low goal cycle and breaching ability that could easily rack up valuable 4 rp matches. 498: Winner at AZ North and showed a huge advancement in quick breaching and shooting ability just a few weeks later at AZ West. |

Re: Top 5 Teams In Your State/Area before CHAMPS
Florida:
1. 233, 2 regional wins, finalist at another. Super consistent low goal capabity, plus a scale (I think they added this after Orlando). Not to mention they built most of their robot the Thursday at Orlando :). 2. 180, 2 regional wins. Kinda accurate high goal shooter. Awesome human player. 3. 179, 1 regional win, finalist and semi-finalist in two others. Great auto/vision tracking, awesome scaling mechanism. Reason it doesn't beat 180 or 233 is because of huge reliability problems. 4. 386, 2 time semi-finalist. This is a real standout year for Voltage. Super accurate high goal shooter, plus it teeters and totters all over the field. 5. You could probably wedge a lot of teams in here but I'm going to choose 79. 79 is a very accurate low goal robot with a cool scaling mechanism. Honourable mentions go to: 86, 3556, 1251, and 744. (Maybe us? IDK.) |

Re: Top 5 Teams In Your State/Area before CHAMPS
How can we do just a top 5 in IN? I'll do a top 9 high goal shooters in IN
(sorry low goal teams... It's hard to rank high and low goal teams together) High Goal Shooting Capabilities (Intake time, Shoot accuracy, and Auto) 1. 1024 (consistent catapult with lots of high shots each match) 2. 1501 (lots of high goals a match, climber worked well when it worked) 3. 1747 (proves they can win with lots of high goals each match) 4. 868 (great high goal shooting) 5. 234 (Fairly consistent goal auto. High goal shoots good. Inconsistent # of shots) 6. 4103 (good high goal. Climber works a high % of time) 7. 135 (good high goal shooting) 8. 4982 (good high goal shooter) 9. 1741 (probably underrated on this list. Great 2nd day high goal shooter at perry. Needs more time to lock in capabilities we've seen.) Now before we get in arguments over this, making this top 9 list was painful... competition is so so close in IN, especially in the top 9 high goal shooter. I feel pretty confident on the top three but 4-9 is so so close. |
Re: Top 5 Teams In Your State/Area before CHAMPS
I don't know why, but I'm a huge sucker for this sorta thing
WA (there were a lot of great teams this year - these lists are getting harder to make :p ): 1-1983: now that they've got that shooter working, they can do every part of the game well 2- 2046: despite losing a week of improvement time due to the theft of their robot, they still have one of the most accurate high goal shooters, and probably the most consistent high goal auto 3- 2471: I'm a sucker for a good tall robot 4- 4469: if you don't defend against this team, they will make every single high goal they shoot. and they're good at winning events 5- 5803: they might not deal with the high goal, but they have mastered every other aspect of the game OR: 1-1425: excessively consistent 2-1540: probably their best robot. consistent high goal, good at crossing. what not to like? 3- 4488: they've struggled to be as good as they were in previous years. it's still a good robot, but their shooter accuracy leaves something to be desired 4- 2990: they climb, they traverse defenses, they low goal, they defend. solid robot 5- 955: I'm really hoping they can get their shooter more accurate - they could become quite a threat if they do PNW: 1- 1983 2- 1425 3- 2046 4- 2471 5- 4469 |
Re: Top 5 Teams In Your State/Area before CHAMPS
Florida:
1. 180: 2 regional wins, very hard to defend high goal shooting. 2. 179: 1 regional win and 1 finalist, highest point output but somewhat inconsistent. best climb in the state. 3. 233: 2 regional wins and 1 finalist, the best low goal robot in Florida also added a climb at there 3rd regional. 4. 1065: 1 regional win, high goal auto, high goals if possible but prefers to low goal if defended. 5. 79: fast low goals with a climb. |

The corollary to this is what might be the #1 pick for Team X may be lower on the "pick list" of Team Y, and different than Team Z, etc. Another way to think about it in practical terms is that if 1058 were the #1 seed, they might have a different first pick than if 319 were the #1 seed or 238 were the #1 seed, or .... In any case, recusing our own team (1519) from the list above, the team I would choose to replace us is 166, who has an excellent high goal shooter when their vision targeting is working correctly -- their #2 seeding at Pine Tree was a result of good consistent shooting in qualification rounds. So, in numerical order (since it is hard to rank within the teams below, depending upon what one favors for robot qualities...) NH: 166 238 319 1058 5813 |

South Carolina:
1) 4451. Won Palmetto as the first pick, quarters in Orlando after a freak drivetrain failure, Palmetto EI, Orlando Innovation in Control. 2) 3490. They're the only other team in South Carolina with a banner this year, winning Rocket City. Sure, they were the last pick of the draft and played alongside Bomb Squad and Robonauts...but hey, I've been there and the banner is just as blue. Scoreboard. (Oh, and they were first-round picks at Palmetto, losing in the quarters to the eventual champs.) 3) 343. Finalists at Palmetto (for the third time in five years), quarters at Rocket City. 4) 1876. Third pick of the draft at both Palmetto (quarters) and Orlando (semis). 3) 2815. They were criminally overlooked at Palmetto by everyone except Frank's Blog, and rightfully a first-round selection at Rocket City where they made semis before running into the 118/16/3490 buzzsaw. |

Re: Top 5 Teams In Your State/Area before CHAMPS
There are a lot of sleepers in Michigan. MSC is going to be exciting this year for sure. The OPR numbers are crazy. With a huge rookie class and the whopping number of districts the field was certainly the most churned it has ever been. I don't disagree with the Michigan posts I have seen on here thus far. But with 100+ teams on two fields the top 5 is truly just the tip of the iceberg.

Honestly, now that I think about it. Pretty much everyone in Indiana that shoots at least 4 or 5 high, and of course 71, has a very very good chance of winning DCP. Any pair up of the top 10 listed could put up a great fight.

Michigan's field is extremely deep. Some good teams missed the cut for MIDCMP, and there are many in this weekend's field that have not shown their best game yet. Scouting is going to be a challenge, probably even harder than a CMP division. I will be surprised if 33 does not seed #1. Beyond that, the possibilities are too many to contemplate. |

Re: Top 5 Teams In Your State/Area before CHAMPS
North Carolina
I usually dont bite on comparative threads but there are just too many excellent things to say about the teams this year. In numerical order and excluding my own team: 1533- Triple Strange - I took one look at this robot at the first District Competition in Guilford and knew it was the perfect alliance partner for 3506 once they got everything working well -we would not get to test that until 6 weeks later at State Championships. Absurd Swank drive system that works very well for breaching and certainly the most reliable climber in NC to boot (they made the top 10 climber list in the world too). When they are tuned, their high goal shooting locks in their wins. Happy we got this team as our first pick at State Champs and even happier that this team got their first two blue banners this season. 2642 - Pitt Pirates - Fast and solid breacher, a decent high goal shooter, and can probably push every team out of their way. Also a strong District Chairman's Award winning team with a sweet pit. 2655 - Flying Platypi - Most consistent performance and sturdiest robot in NC. A low goal and defense breaching beast with an excellent drive team that always pushes the clock to the limit and they almost always make the right play. Out of the District Chairman's Award winners, they were the team we feared losing to the most on and off the field and for good reason. A solid team this year! 4290 - Bots of War - We won our first event with them because they are the most underrated, tiny at 95 lbs, and terrifying low goal robot in NC. This is the only team in NC that can down the tower alone and still breach a couple of defenses along the way. When I say fast, I don't mean so fast they slam into stuff trying to steer, they have control of that speed and use it well. They are the fastest breacher in the state when they are not slamming balls into the tower and when they get their climber on their robot for Champs, they will be even more terrifying. Say goodbye to your tower around this team because this is the robot that can do what most low bar teams wish they could do. 4561 - Terrorbytes - "Blinding light of high goal scoring". This team is probably the best outer works shooter in the state and we had the pleasure of making it to finals with them at the Campbell University District event. Their robot is very short, skates under the Portcullis, and can tackle any defense you throw at it quickly. Built solid, they have a great machine this year. |

IN is pretty tough but I'd say the top 4 in no particular order are 868, 1024, 1501, and 1747.
868- 2x event winner, chairman's award, quality award, innovation in control award 1024-3x event winner, quality award, industrial design award 1501-2x event finalist, quality award, innovation in control award, excellence in engineering award 1747-2x event winner, chairman's award, entrepreneurship award, innovation in control award |
Re: Top 5 Teams In Your State/Area before CHAMPS
I know the Minnesota area has been done to death, but here's my two cents worth:
1) 5172 Coming out of Greenbush Middle River, the Gators have truly dominated their competitions (Northern Lights & Iowa), placing as finalists in the former and winning the latter. Their 20 point autonomous is truly dominating and one of the most consistent I've seen, and their hanging mechanism combines simplicity and functionality in a near flawless design that scales almost every match. With a truly impressive two-year history, I doubt this year will be any exception. 2) 2052 Krawling out of New Brighton, KnightKrawler has continued a decade of competitive robots and a formidable awards game. With a finalist position at Lake Superior and a fantastic success at 10K Lakes under their belts, these guys have claimed three qualifying spots over the course of the season (Wildcard, Winners, and Chairman's). With a beautiful catapult accompanied with spot-on vision code (which, for the record, was accurate at even week 1), KnightKrawler is a truly formidable high goal cycler capable of incredible speed and accuracy. Krawl on guys, krawl on. 3) 3130 One of two fantastic Woodbury teams this year, their success is certainly no ERROR. Combining a strong drive train with a powerful catapult (accompanied by a great vision code), these guys were topping the charts nearly the entirety of North Star. The ERRORS have won a competition and are coming off of a very successful season last year as well, and they are definitely a force to be reckoned with. 4) 2175 The second of the unstoppable Woodbury duo, The Fighting Calculators are on track for matching their success in 2014. Rocking the 12.5" diameter pneumatic wheels, their defense game is strong, as well as their quick, vision-powered catapult shot. They got off to a rough start in Iowa, but certainly redeemed themselves tenfold after claiming the top ranking spot in North Star and going on to win their competition. Overall, these Calculators have not stopped Fighting, and won't stop anytime soon. 5) 2502 Flying out of Eden Prairie, Talon Robotics returns for another year of success. With a couple of successes in Duluth, and winning Engineering Inspiration twice this year, they have proven to be a formidable foe wherever they go. Much like 2175 in that they had a bit of trouble their first competition, they showed their worth at 10K Lakes, displaying their successful and accurate catapult with a consistent hanging mechanism. Their defenses game is rock solid, and they have a truly high-flying reputation as an award-winning team. Talon Robotics will certainly continue their well-deserved success. |

In no particular order 3008 2439 2438 I will recuse myself as it could be considered biased as I am the one posting. Good luck to everyone at championships. Aloha! |

If you watch the Houston Regional we were the first pick for the second alliance. In our first regional I would agree that we did terrible, but our bot has been much improved since then. Right now our problem is that we are using Java as our main programming languages and that it takes us too long to pick up boulders. In the next week we hope to solve both of the problems to make our bot even better than it was during the past two regionals. On a side note we did knock out 624 in Houston soooo.... |

525: The best robot (in my opinion) in the state this year is definitely 525's. 2 regional wins, a chairman's award, the Swartdogs have done it all with a very capable breacher, and a high quality catapult. 5576: Team Terminator earns my vote for the second best robot from Iowa. They had a very good high goal shoot, (once they got their shooter dialed in), which when coupled with a good hanging mechanism, makes them a team to put on the list of top robots that did not qualify for champs. 3928: Team Neutrino built a robot that one could argue had more potential scoring than any other robot in the state. Consistency was a issue for them this year, and resulted in them often times running low goal cycles, as opposed to the high goal cycles that I am sure they would have preferd to running had they had their shoot fully dialed in. 967: The best of the full time low goalers, the Iron Lions focused their efforts on running cycles over many different defenses and low goals. While they likely had hoped for a better season than going unselected at the Iowa regional, and a 5th selection at the North Star regional, it was still a strong performing robot, (when they were not having problems with break-downs). 167: The Children of the Corn combined a very good shooter with a treaded drivebase that was great for defense crossing. A robot that could be very easily over-looked if not scouted well. I did not include my team (4646, Team ASAP) as my opinions are biased. An arguement could be made to put us in this list, but each of these other teams (in my opinion) are all very deserving of the positions in their own ways. Midwest: (I am defining as North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, and Illinois.) 5172 2481 1986 525 2451 |

Wish you guys the best at working out your issues and at champs. I think we have a very strong set of Texas reps this year. |

Re: Top 5 Teams In Your State/Area before CHAMPS
In Ontario, first two are obvious. 1114 may have their ups and downs functionally this year but there is no question that they top the list in terms of both inspiration of other teams and excellence of their design.
1. 1114 2. 2056 3. 610 4. 4039 5. 4678 (if you haven't watched this robot - check out Windsor-Essex or Waterloo - it is amazing to watch the drawbridge auto). This is their second year of building a top quality machine. Tied for 5 would be 1305. |

Re: Top 5 Teams In Your State/Area before CHAMPS
Well here is my list for Indiana, revised after the state championships for who is actually going.
1) 1501: A really great and consistent team who can shoot upwards of 5 high goals every match. Does auto high and scales to top it all of 2) 1024: Again a really consistent high goal shooter who is quick to line up. 3) 868: Good high goal shooter, but a little inconsistent and is prone to missing shots. However, in a great match, they can put up 7 or so high goals. 4) 1747: They would honestly be my number one pick if I was taking into account their performances at Tippecanoe and Perry meridian. However, they still score a lot high and do a auto high goal. 5) 4103: Although easily the weakest shooter on the list, they can cross defenses with ease and scale the tower in under ten seconds. Only thing is that they can easily be defended against. |
Re: Top 5 Teams In Your State/Area before CHAMPS
New England after District Champs-
1. 195 - Efficient catapult cycles, a quick scissor hang, and most impressively a 2 ball autonomous, 195 is truly on a world class level. (Also worth mentioning is their amazing human player) 125 - While unable to gain a district win this year, the NUTRON’s deadly catapult and high scoring autonomous gained them the win at Hartford. They edge out MAYHEM for the #2 spot due to their newly added hanger 1519 - Mechanical mayhem puts balls in the high goal with incredible speed and accuracy, and also up their sleeve is an impressive set of autonomous modes. Winning 2 for 2 before arriving in hartford, 1519 ended their run in semi-finals but not before setting an incredible world high score. 133 - Bonny Eagle was the top pick at North Shore (although they declined), the winner at Pine Tree, and finalists at NEDCMP. They’re aided by their high goal autonomous, fast flashlight catapulting and a consistent hang. 4564 - Seeding 1st comfortably at Hartford after missing only 3 ranking points, Orange Chaos’s quick batter cycling and innovative tape measure climber carried them all the way to finals. While not previously showing autonomous scoring capability, 4564 was able make a high autonomous shot in semifinals. Honorable mentions - 230, 177, 558 |

Re: Top 5 Teams In Your State/Area before CHAMPS
In Ontario:
1: 1241 2: 1114 3: 2056 4: 610 5: 3683 IIRC, 1241's record this year is one of the best in their history, and their stats fully support it. From our scouting data, they crossed ~5 defenses and shot ~6.5 high goal shots per match with an accuracy of 97%. They're also able to do every single defense, so nothing really slows them down. 1114 and 2056 speak for themselves. Both top-tier low bots that can cross almost every defense and score ~4-5 high shots per match with 90-95% accuracy from our data. Team DAVE 3683 is on this list because IMO, they're the support that any high goal shooter wants; Crosses defenses fantastically, feeds boulders faster than you can shoot them and still has time to mess with the other alliance while they do it. |
