Segway-like device being developed by Honda

In this months Popular Science, there is a article talking about a segway like device cept more "extreame sporty". It could function as a Self Balancing motorcycle, a self balancing land-lush type machine, and a segway like Human Transporter. Also it would cruise at MUCH HIGHER speeds.

Right now they seem to be only fooling around with the idea.

Pick-up a copy of popular science to get the details. Its a good magazine!

Any pics? Bet it isn't as safe as Segway and due to the legislation passed by many states, it probably states they can only use segways.

I thought people would be much more exited about this....

give me a segway and maybe i'll get excited about it....

sidewinder 15-10-2002 13:43

well duh

the concept behind the segway is very simple and its logical especially in soemthing like a motorcyclye that self balancing gyros may be common in the future. the segway fell far short of my expectations.

MBiddy 15-10-2002 15:35

I'm not excited by the segway.

I hate people like you, it wasnt Dean's fault the thing was hyped. Blame the media, and stop being spoiled

As for it being hyped... it exactly was Dean's fault for mentioning "IT". These types of hype are commonplace in many industries (definately commonplace in the tech sector). It's a way of raising one's stock price and saying "Hey! hey! look at me! I'm special!" Then all the investors turn their heads and say "ooo... I want to know what he has." And they get excited and buy stock in hope that it will be "the next big thing."

Dean did exactly that. It's been done before. Microsoft does it all the time. So does many chip manufacturers, such as AMD, Nvidia, and Intel. Car makers do it as well... advertise their new cars before they are out.

I think the hype benefitted the segway more than it harmed it. If nobody knew about the 'breakthrough' and suddenly they came on the news with it... people would be... "WTH is that? One of those razer scooters? Bah. [changes channel]."

Joe Matt 15-10-2002 18:23

This would be true if Dean did spill it all for publicity. But when our good ole' friend Kamen starts to mutter about decete and betrayl, you know that this wasn't a hype leak. Someone made a huge mistake.

I support MattK's decision. You read the paper and see the news, if you have ridden it you would know it's good.

But everyone has their opinions. If you never like it, fine, but if your PO'ed that it didn't beam you from point a to b, then go bother someone else.

Do people go haywire over every new car that comes out?

OH MY GOD CHECK OUT THAT NEW CHEVY AVALANCHE IT'S A SUV AND TRUCK IN ONE!!!!

Umm.... no they don't. Nor should you expect them to.

How about reading the article...

The motorcycle has next to nothing to do with Honda, first of all. The article even states that it's an independent project done by some guy who gets unofficial help from a Honda engineer, and that Honda is not interested in pursuing the idea at this time.

The actual vehicle is 3-wheeled in design, not 2. The rider leans forward and the vehicle flattens itself out and increases speed - it gets to a point where the rider is essentially only a couple of inches off the ground and moving at 60 miles (or kilometers, I forget) an hour. Here's an ASCII:

Upright, stationary:
__
/ ||
/ | |
O 00

At speed:

__
O---====---00

The only thing the guy is pulling from the Segway is the system of leaning to translate into speed.

This would not transform into a Segway, by the way. It's simply a funny-looking, flat-terrained 3-wheeled motorcycle.
