One sec. Robots are srs bzns after all...

The 2nd ball wasn't centered on the tape. And if it were, the intake appears to come down over the apex of the 2nd ball, meaning it broke the plane of the center tape. Am I seeing that right?

This.

I think champs will need light beams to prove if or if-not a robot broke the center plane.

Also, I'll expect a second position from 1986. Probably rough terrain too.

While I do hope this works out for them at champs, I have to agree that based on this video, it is doubtful this particular routine would actually get the ball in a legal starting position. It seems that the bot just barely doesnt cross the line, but the ball also seems to be 2 inches closer

I'm not going to claim to know 254's intake geometry, but from the angle of the camera, 2 inches farther and it wouldn't get a grip on that ball.

Of course, I imagine this isn't the final iteration either.

Now that 254 and 118 (see above) has shown theirs, this means there's at least two teams in Newton that has a two boulder auto that crosses a defense that's not the low bar. If/when these two teams play together, it will be ridiculous.

I just find it hard to believe that the Cheesy Poofs would overlook these details. I think it's much more likely that the camera view is misleading. After all, if these oversights were easy enough for armchair roboticists to point out after watching a 10 second YouTube video, surely someone on 254 would have noticed the issue first?

254 knows what they're doing. If you don't believe their auto is legit and think it was sloppy or not accurate, it's your loss. They aren't cheating, and they certainly aren't making videos of illegal autonomous modes to intimidate people.

If Champs tower strength is 10, then 10-2-2-1 = 5 strength. Which is absolutely insane.

Down to 5, right? If 254 gets 2 shots in, 118 gets 2 shots in, and robot 3 gets a shot in, then the 10 starting health drops to 5.

right thanks, I should start over my elementary school math
but 5 or 6 doesn't really matter at this point, the tower will be WAY below 0 health when the match ends anyways

Fair statement.

The question I wonder: will we see a 6-ball auto, either here or at IRI? Between low bar, rock wall/rough terrain, and moat/ramparts, it's not like the field doesn't lend itself to it.

Skepticism is healthy when it comes to robot videos! Until someone does this in a qualification or elimination match, it hasn't happened as far as I am concerned. I am confident in the legality and reliability of our class B/D 2-ball on our practice field, but I'm just a guy on a message board.

The ball not being on the line was an oversight on our part. I double checked all the other videos of this and (of course, ugh) we used the only take where the ball was slightly off (you get sloppy after running a few dozen times). Besides, if we were intentionally pulling a fast one on you, we would have filmed the video from 6 inches off the ground. :D

A ramparts 2 ball auto would be close to impossible.

Hmm, seems like Worlds may have a better chance since the audience can be 'convinced' to select Moat. We have yet to see if IRI will keep that particular 'feature' of the game.

Though Class A 2-balls could become a thing with Portcullis. CDF - maybe... that drop is so violent...

Greg Needel 04-25-2016 04:08 PM

Re: Dropshots Fired!

Guess what, even if you do end up crossing the line it is a 5pt penalty and the ball is worth 10pts in the goal. The tower strength drop + net 5pts + balls on your side of the field in auton is worth the risk.

I just believe that the 2nd ball wont be there for them in elims as it is even easier to defend than the one through the low bar.

@254 & @118
Great job guys! Looking forward to seeing you on Einstein. (hopefully from the other side of the field and not from the stands).

Portcullis seems easiest, but it would have required the correct robot geometry (Forward facing turret and backwards facing intake).

I believe that they are also, what I was thinking was on the rare occasion something messes up the reward out weights the risk every time. I also think that refs will have a hard time justifying giving a penalty for crossing a fraction of an inch over the line when there is only such a small second that it happens.

Re: Dropshots Fired!

When picking up the second ball are you using a photoelectric sensor or some other sensor to detect when the robot has reached the ball? Is that what the yellow thing next to the bumper is?

It is expressly illegal, and thus if they cross over the line at all they should be penalized.

That being said, we're all looking forward to seeing them pull this off in a match :)

Cons of living in California from a Canadian standpoint:
  • No Gregor
  • No Karthik
  • No Tim Horton's
  • No snow

Pros of living in California from a Canadian standpoint:
  • No snow
  • Ice capps are always in season
  • Polar bears don't chew on your radio wires
  • Soldering irons don't take an hour to heat up
  • FRC on-field glass doesn't occasionally have shoe marks on it

I would say it's pretty likely. We use one of these on our robot to tell if the ball is in our intake, and it looks like the back of that sensor in the photo.

Now, where's the cheval 2 ball?

This is one that I do not think will be possible (please, prove me wrong teams). But the active motion to manipulate the CDF and the heavy drop likely will result in this never being accomplished. I know it was probably a fun, sarcastic joke, but unless the action is passive (similar to 1678), this won't be accomplished.

Titanium already has an automated CDF cross sequence, I wouldn't be surprised if they tried (although thinking now, they might have some problems going backwards over it to get the second ball). An engineer can still dream.

I think you highlight the major problem with doing a 2 ball CDF: it takes too much time and gives too much error to turn around to manipulate the CDF back. Unless you have a CDF manipulator on both sides, this might take too much time.

Cue 254's next auto.

Why do you need a CdF two ball if you can already do it over one of the other non low bar defenses? Sure it'd be nice to get the CdF partially done in auto, but as long as you can do it over something else, you've already got a significant advantage over 99% of the field.

Look at 254's bot, they have a main arm in the front which is used for cheval, but the intake arm on the back can also be used for the cheval......

CUE THE CHEVAL

I'm not sure if the intake arm can be used for the cheval I looked at that arm long and hard and it appears to
Be pneumatically driven by one set of air cylinders so the length it goes down is all it goes down and it doesn't appear to be down far enough for the cheval

Who says they have to return over the CDF? Who says both crosses need to be the same defense?

Simplicity does? :)
It's certainly possible to go over one, shoot, go over a different one, collect-cross-shoot but man is that pushing the limit.

I had thought of that too, and it would certainly be complicated, but I bet it could be done. If you wanted to bump up to another level of complexity, have an auto that cross and shoots, uses vision to detect which balls are still available (supposing the other alliance has a two-ball auton), and then crosses the requisite defense to get that second ball.

The simple answer is you don't. But, you've got to admit that it'd be pretty cool.

254 has already gone over one defense and returned through a different defense in auto. It's definitely possible for them to pick up the second ball that way, but I don't know if they have enough time to cross and shoot.
