Your favorite robot of all time?
Title says it all. Public poll to see what your personal favorite FRC robot has been, from any year and any team; not necessarily the best or most functional!
My personal favorite: Team 195's 2013 robot, Oddjob Year after year, the Cyberknights roll out stellar robots in six weeks, but Oddjob is special. Its fullcourt shooting through the Ultimate Ascent season was virtually unrivaled at the regional level, and still outclassed its opponents at championships. In addition, its high COG and "whaletail" made for some suspenseful and interesting moments on the field. The crossfielding was incredible to watch at the final Connecticut regional, which only made Ultimate Ascent's reputation as one of the best challenges FIRST has created stronger. What's stuck out for you over the years? |

Re: Your favorite robot of all time?
FRC 279's 2004 robot.
It was just so cool to watch in action. It would grab the bar from the lower platform and then clamshell up, flip over and the spread out some lexan flaps to block other robots from getting on. It was a part of the single coolest moment I saw at a FIRST event in Quarterfinal 2 of the Buckeye Regional 378,48 and 1038 (i can't remember if 48 or 1038 were out because it was 2 vs. 2 that year). 378 had made their way up onto the upper platform and was moving in on 279 who was approaching from the lower platform so basically 378 drove on top of them after 279 grabbed the bar. 279 decided they were going up even with 378 on top of them and lifted them both up off the ground. The place went nuts! 279 did their thing while 378 fell off to the floor. 279, 859 and 1001 still ended up losing the match though. Sadly there are no archives of this robot in action on the Blue Alliance. |
Re: Your favorite robot of all time?
My favorite robot of all time is 254's 2014 robot. It is not extremely complicated, in fact many teams could have made their robot, but the strategy they used was so unique and so elegant that it is definitely my favorite robot.
|
Re: Your favorite robot of all time?
Team 1986 in 2013. As a freshman going to champs for the first time and new to FRC, I was amazed at how 1986's bot was performing in the newton division in 2013. Till this day the Kraken still remains my favorite robot of all time.
33 & 254 looked good in 2014. I liked 148 & 1114 in 2015. 971 is definitely my fav this year. |
Re: Your favorite robot of all time?
971 in 2016. I love the superstructure, the mechanical and programming sides of it working together is certainly one of the most fantastic things I've seen.
and 148 in 2015. Something about that tether bot makes me so happy |
Re: Your favorite robot of all time?

As a second year team, they built a phenomenally simple robot that not only looked beautiful, but performed excellently. |

Re: Your favorite robot of all time?
Definitely 1114 in 2015 with their robot Sideswipe. Maybe not as perfectly consistent as the winning 2015 landfill bot because of Simbotics occasional struggles with getting cans. 1114 at it's best was uncontested, and unbelievable to watch.

Re: Your favorite robot of all time?
Only doing the years I've been in FRC
2013- 1986: My first year in FRC and we had the chance to attend Champs. Watching this bot tear up the Newton Field was incredible. 2014- 3467: Very creative and well-performing bot we had the pleasure of playing with/against, no doubt a major contributing factor to what is Windup's best season so far. 2015- 2122: Saw this bot in action at IRI after their successful official season. Much speed, so stacks. The linked match from that event stands out the most to me, 4 fully capped 6-stacks from this beyond impressive machine. 2016- 971: Spartan's robots are like none other out there, this year's was no exception. Amazing design and performance. IMO one of the best and most unique bots to come out of Stronghold. |

My favourite is probably 910 from 2010. There's a certain elegance about a robot that's designed to roll over.
|
Re: Your favorite robot of all time?
1114 in 2015.
Pretty much just because of the way they transported it. Oh yea it was also really good too. |
Re: Your favorite robot of all time?
1241's black mamba is also one of my favs this year.
|
Re: Your favorite robot of all time?
233 in 2005. I remember having to pick my jaw up off the floor watching it pick up two tetras from the loader in auto mode (Autonomous mode was a lot more boring in 2005).

Re: Your favorite robot of all time?
Breakaway 2010 freshman year, seeing 469 in person and fieldside Curie as a Team Media person, so naturally that got me hooked on finding the game breaking robot from each season.
Also that year was 2337 literally built part of the field on wheels and boy did it look incredible. Shame that it didn't pan out as they wanted it to. End game just wasn't weighted well enough. Two years later, Rebound Rumble 2012, and 1717 literally swerved into my view and I fell in love with their robot. I've yet to see a drive train that can match that robot, and may D'penguineers rest in peace. (Still sad over that one.) 2056 in Ultimate Ascent 2013 was simply the epitome of building to seed first, and nailed that squarely on the head. I'll always love that robot in it's simplicity yet incredible grace. |

Re: Your favorite robot of all time?
971 from this year is my new favorite.
971 is probably my new favorite team in general; their past few robots have been so great to watch. As a programmer, the automation on those things makes me squirm with delight. |

It was just such a polished robot. Their cycle time was short, and their shooting accuracy was next to perfect. Israel has been consistently putting forward great robots but Orbit took them to the next level. |

Re: Your favorite robot of all time?
Gotta be 71 in 2002. A robot that can't, turn, falls on the ground at the start of every game, and can haul the entire alliance and all goals (700+ pounds) for the win. All at a slow pace of probably 2 inches/sec. Every match won in 5 measly seconds.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQP4IsnIAXo Followed closely by 179 in 2012. Clever, just clever. Hanging under the bridge instead of on top of it. A brilliant creation. Watch the end of this video to see the bridge shenanigans. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lplARY6PPUQ |

Re: Your favorite robot of all time?
Here’s my personal list for favorite robots for the years I’ve been involved as a mentor. Some years were much harder to narrow down to a single design than others, and reasoning differs from year to year. I’m not really sure I could ever manage to narrow it down completely to a single favorite overall design.
2009 = 1625 – This was my rookie year, and the game was weird. I didn’t get too familiar with a lot of the designs this year, but one stood out in a very memorable way. It was a treat to see that huge hopper get filled with balls and then just wait for them to find their unlucky victim who was about to have their trailer engulfed. They only needed to find an opening once and a pneumatic hiss was the harbinger of the devastating swing to come on the scoreboard. 2010 = 469 - The concept behind this design was brilliant. I know they weren't the only team to think about the ball return redirect as an idea, but they were the only team to embrace it and execute it, and the results were borderline gamebreaking. I often use this robot as an example when talking with my students about outside-the-box strategic design. 2011 = 254 - Double ubertube auton, super fast floor loading, efficient elevator claw, and lightning fast minibot. Personally, I didn't like this game very much, but this was one of those robots that made it fun to watch. 2012 = 1717 – The most fun robot to watch in Rebound Rumble. Amazing swerve drive allowing them to just sweep up balls extremely fast and efficiently. Lightning fast rapid fire of the 3 balls from wherever they decided to shoot from. An amazing machine. 2013 = 1114 – One of, if not the, most challenging engineering challenges in terms of resulting robot design. We managed to package a capable corner climb and dump with an effective shooter that still allowed us to travel under the pyramid. 1114 had the same strategic capability concept, but they cranked everything up to 11 and executed it so elegantly. They cycled extremely fast and then when the time came to climb, they essentially just drove up the corner and deposited those extra disks in the top in about half the time it took us to do the same. Knowing the challenges we faced that season, the level of appreciation and respect for what they accomplished with their design cannot be understated. 2014 = 254 – Obviously, a very popular choice, and rightfully so. So much about this robot was essentially perfect. Just one of those robots where you couldn’t take your eyes off it while it was on the field. This is my personal favorite game design challenge and this is the robot that took everything about that and unquestionably played it the best. The 3 ball auton is my all-time favorite design feature capability. 2015 = 1114 – I remember playing in Arkansas week 2 and hearing rumblings of what Simbotics was showing it was able to do from the landfill in its debut the same week. As a landfill bot ourselves, we couldn’t believe what we were hearing and felt it had to be your general over exaggeration. People were passing around practice day footage like it was a bigfoot sighting and when we finally saw what they were capable of, it blew our minds. We were working hard to get 2 complete stacks and they were already clearing the landfill completely with 3 at week 2. They just got better and better as the season progressed, too. Incredible machine and one of the few that could make Recycle Rush enjoyable to watch. 2016 = 971 – The most fun robot to watch this season, and an absolutely jaw dropping design. The versatility the design features provided on the field was impressive and the effortless flow from one location and task to the next was incredible. Seeing this machine up close gave me an even greater sense of appreciation for the perfect marriage of mechanical design and controls software. Amazing machine. |

Re: Your favorite robot of all time?
1114 in 2015
No design was anything like it that year. It was the most successful Killough drive I've ever seen. It was a flop bot in years after the flop bot paradigm was written out of the rules. Its CAD shows exactly how complex it was to design and yet how simple it was to assemble. It was as aesthetically pleasing as it was effective. Its hype was generated by its seasonal stats rather than a release video. It was easily the Mona Lisa of robots that year. |
Re: Your favorite robot of all time?
Oooh here we go. Probably some less popular picks for some people to enjoy.
2016 - 1241 2015 - 2826 2014 - 971 2013 - 469 2012 - 341 2011 - 1114 2010 - 469 2009 - 217 2008 - 1114 2007 - 1114 As for favorite of all time, I think I would have to give it to 469 in 2013. Double frisbee loading, nice autonomous, most versatile FCS/cycling robot of 2013 hands down, and a really interesting pickup. |

Re: Your favorite robot of all time?
From my time in FIRST:
2011- 40, 1503 2012- 4334, 58, 67 2013- 3467, 1918, 469, 2169, 195 2014- 900, 1918, 2485, 5254 2015- 148, 4039, 1325, 3476 2016- 558, 3683, 4678, 1241, 3624 My favorite robots are generally the ones that do a lot with a little. The simple, elegant designs and the ones that make you go "Man that's so much simpler than ours, why didn't we do that?" My favorite robot of all time is probably a toss up between 67 in 2012 and 900 in 2014. 67's 2012 robot almost single-handedly inspired me to really get into FIRST. Before Archimedes 2012 I enjoyed FRC, but after seeing the elegant engineering of that machine, I wanted to be like them. 900 in 2014 was a robot any team could have built, but didn't. It was so smart and simple, but also so against what most teams thought they needed to have that year. I had some crazy plans if we were an alliance captain in Archimedes about picking up 900 and 1918 for some crazy death cycle shenanigans. |
Re: Your favorite robot of all time?
Two robots I'd like to mention:
2016 in 2011 - their wheeled roller claw was incredible; one of the best intakes that year. 987 in 2012 - This robot didn't lose a match until their last match of qualifications at Championships. The only other two matches they lost were in Einstein finals. |

233 in 2011 was probably the most influential robot to me. The sheer elegance of that robot is something I still try to emulate this day.

Re: Your favorite robot of all time?
2012: 1717
1717 was one of the only teams that made it beneficial not to triple balance that year as they could score enough balls in 30 seconds to score more than 40 pts with a double balance. 2013: 469 This one was hard as there were so many amazing robots in 2013 but I think 469 is my favorite due to their flexibility in both auto and teleop, and their scoring potential. 2014: 254 254 was amazing to watch in 2014 due to their driver's skill, three ball auto and the unforgettable last second score on Einstein. 2015: 2826 I remember seeing their auto reveal at a team meeting and being absolutely stunned. The robot is beautiful and could create lots of stacks in a short amount of time. 2016: 971 971 was my favorite this year due to the fact that they could do pretty much everything and be top-notch in auto scoring, boulder scores and scaling. I think my overall favorite robot is 1717 from 2012. The swerve drive was flawless and their match at CVR where they one by scoring 4 balls at during the last 15 seconds with 330 dead was an amazing match to watch. |
Re: Your favorite robot of all time?
My favourite robot in FRC so far has been 148s from 2015, Batman and Robin. The way that 148 went about solving the problem of Recycle Rush with Batman and Robin was so unique and yet the concept was super simple, watching the reveal stills blows me away.

i haven't been in FIRST as long as most people here but I remember the first robot that just blew my mind as student on a team and because of that I think it has to be my favorite. It was team 4143 during 2013. I saw it at the Wisconsin regional and it seriously changed how I thought about FIRST robots. I still talk about it to this day because it's so freaking cool.

It was the first year I really learned about teams outside of New England and Simbot Prime blew my mind. |

67 in 2013 was my favorite to watch. Can't believe that machine didn't win any official events, divisions or IRI. Was amazing to watch when they started scoring.

Everyone's hating on 2009, but I learned a lot of cool things from robots from that year, even if the game was trash.
67 taught me that iteration and rebuilds win Championships. 111 taught me to always use full volume when game piece # isn't limited 973 taught me some cool stuff about frame design and 217 was just a monster that year, along with 1771. Two of my favorite bots. |
