Is Canada really going to dstricts? Has that been confirmed yet? If it has, can you link where you saw the news? And I'm surprised that I haven't heard about this yet. Thanks.

I might be hazy on my geography, but I think Canada is a little big to be made into a district. :)

Re: districts 2017

Just as a general tip do not declare something as a fact unless you can back it up. All of these possible districts ideas are either rumors, or educated guesses. Not facts.

To my knowledge Canada as a district has not even been considered.

If Canada went districts it would probably be separated by province. The issue is only Ontario and Quebec really have enough teams to form an individual district. At this point all the geography experts realize there's a lot of land in the other 8 provinces (although I'm not sure if there are teams in some of them). Overall making it a centralized district should and probably will not ever happen. Let's not forget Canada is larger then the US.

Texas from what I hear is also not that close to going to districts being in the same general boat as NY.

Districts for next year have not yet been announced yet so unless your a Regional Director you probably do not know what's going on. If anyone is curious emailing the local regional director will probably give you a clear answer.

SpaceBiz 10-05-2016 10:24

Just to be clear, the rumor I heard Texas is going to districts was from a team member on a team from Texas at champs. I find it somewhat credible, seeing as we (Chesapeake) were very aware of and were planning for the likley switch to districts at the time of the regionals we attended last year. But we shall see.

For anyone not familiar with districts, the idea is to provide 2 district events and a district championship close to teams. Canada is just too big to provide a convenient district championship for all teams. Additionally, much of the country has too low a team density for those two district events. Canada would have to sub-divide to move to the district model. Ontario appears to have enough teams, enough events, and the team density for a district.

According to this thread from this time last year, the target for a Texas district is 2017. Unfortunately, I don't have any more recent information.

At any given time on any given date, we are exactly 2 years away from a Texas district. Or at least so the rumor says.

As we all saw this year with all the mention about flyers going up at the north star regional regarding Minnesota districts, I think they are far off though. There could theoretically be a Midwest district encompassing MO, IL, and IA. Other states could be TX or CA.

Going with the talks of Canada, whats the likelihood of having British Colombia be added to the PNW? there are not many teams in BC, and most (of the 5 measly teams) are near the border already with fairly unrealistic "home" events as is. Im not wanting to advocate it (yet...) but I would like to know what challenges (besides crossing the border and the issues involved with that) it may face trying to do this.

itt: nothing but rumors and speculation.

While we're at it, I heard from a very credible source that China was going to districts next year, California too.

China district has been a long time coming. No surprise there. The real question is what will they name it?

Simple enough. I like it. Now we can all look forward to having FiC events to watch when the west coast events are over.

Time zones work the other way. On a given date, New Zealand starts first and places west of there start successively later. China is four hours behind NZ. California is fifteen hours behind China.

It all depends on the days they chose to have these events. Most regionals are Thursday to Saturday. Some district events are Friday to Saturday, and others are Saturday to Sunday. I was naturally assuming Saturday to Sunday because that's how the district events are here in CHS. So if you watch the last day of a west coast regional ending at 5 PM PST or 8 PM EST on Saturday, that night you can watch the last day (Sunday) of a china event starting at say 9 AM in china, so it's 9 PM on the east coast, and 6 PM on the west coast.

Kansas would need to be included in that district unless they made a new Kansas regional.

Over the next two months, most of the new districts should be announced.

What percentage of teams will be districts in 2017?

I'm a little surprised at how quickly this moves. I had heard rumblings of Ontario going to districts about a month ago - someone on a Quebec team made an offhand remark about not being able to go to Ontario anymore due to Ontario going to districts. I didn't put much stock in the comment at the time thinking, surely if that were true, we'd be notified well beforehand.

I remember being told by team members and friends that districts would be next year in 2012 :D

2016 District Numbers :

Quote:

Chesapeake 132
Georgia 65
Indiana 49
Michigan 411
MAR 122
New England 181
North Carolina 52
PNW 156

total district teams 1168 , 37 % of all teams.
2017 Potential New District Numbers :

Quote:

texas 141
ontario 137

minimum total district teams 1446 , 46 % of all teams.
With strong team growth in districts, districts will likely grow to over 50% of all FRC teams in 2017.

Does that strong team growth really apply outside of Michigan? Are other districts ahead or behind of the regional growth rates?

This is a really good question.

The growing number of teams in Michigan has been fueled by state money, and made sustainable by parallel growth in the volunteer corps and local business support for new district competitions. Underlying both of these is the growing network of sustainable, strong teams -- both in outreach impact and on-field competitiveness.

I think this sustainable growth can and will be replicated in other places.
