Best Scaling Bot This Season?

What are the best bots you have seen scale this season, either online or at events?

My List (Excluding my team):
1259
1714
254
217
27
610
330
33
1114
148
3604
2056
And that's all I can remember.

I would like to mention 3604. I may be a little biased as we won an event with them, but they had that scaler working from day 1, and that was their bread and butter all season. They had that one thing they did and they did it well.

Re: Best Scaling Bot This Season?

1114 and 148 had a very clever way of doing it this year. 2056 did it in a very compact and elegant way that inspired me to figure out how it worked.

I loved 33's scale this season. Super quick to deploy and super quick to hang.

lurker 16-05-2016 18:04

Re: Best Scaling Bot This Season?

610 should be up there, their hang was incredibly consistent and their ability to shoot a high goal while hanging is awesome. Also 1114 and 148 because theirs facilitates a triple hang.

Or teams you were expecting to be better at scaling?

Re: Best Scaling Bot This Season?

There are dozens of teams that scaled. When you say "the best scaling robots", is that the best robots that also scaled, the robots with the "best" scale, the best robots that exclusively scaled, or the robots with cool and different scaling methods?

I can't think of any exclusive scalers, but most cool scalers IMO came from teams that also opted to low bar and had to come up with creative ways to extend from not even 16" off the ground to the height of the bar.
other innovations like that inspire me.

I guess what I mean is the ones that did it well, often, unique, or quick.

118- the grappling hook was one of my favorite things from reveals and was incredibly quick when they used it
1678- i saw several teams with similar designs but it was still impressive
195- watching them make this at hartford district was really cool and it was efficient
558- their bot evolved more than anyone else's and they did well with every change
1768- few teams could get a 20 point end game and there's was pretty cool
148- they consistently impressed with their shooter and climber
and several more i cant think of

118 was outright the best. They messed up a lot at champs, I have no clue why. But at lone star (after their first match) they were one hundred percent consistent. In the time it took most bots to scale, they shot two more boulders and then scaled.... holy crap.

Whether you're biased or not, I completely agree with you there. I think the key factor was that they knew how much they could do in a given match and they made sure to be consistent and do it every time, which got you guys the win. (By the way, great job on that; I was on Field Reset that weekend and it was really exciting to watch! :))

To be fair there were a lot of events and a lot of teams, glad to hear how many peopled scaled though. Most of the time my team was the only one scaling at Buckeye.

Yeah, I was surprised that nobody mentioned 118's grappling hook. It didn't always work during matches, but when it did, it was a sight to behold.

While we may not have had the fastest scale or slam dunk ability (though we could low goal score while on the way up), as far as consistency is concerned, 2122 scaled in every match in St. Louis through Einstein QF except two. One time we misaligned in a rush and got our bumper caught in the low goal, and then another we were flipped upside down (red card).

I have only seen one other team with a similar system. But unfortunately they would lose tension and it it would slowly fall back down.

To echo this, while not one of the flashier hangers, 2122's consistency in hanging was incredible.

1538 hands down had one of the best climbs I saw this season. It was fast and reliable plus they hit the high goal dunk after they climbed.

25 had a pretty good one. If I remember correctly, they hung every match except for the infamous Curie Q111.

Re: Best Scaling Bot This Season?

Has 179 really not been mentioned yet? That was my favorite. They could basically score their robot they were so high up, and their climb looked amazing.

IN Favorites:
1501- looked like a really cool arm. It looked like a claw reaching for the bar and the *click* of success when it finally latches on.

71- Had a great scale from the start. It was something they very rarely failed at. (P.S., it was fun working with you at state champs. I also enjoyed saying yes finally ;) )

234- our team finally scaled. That red scissor lift looked really cool. Plus it was fun seeing our driver walk across the whole driver station area to watch it hook on.

135- All I can say is candy cane. It looked great going up.

292- It was never a pretty finish. It always looked like your bot was crooked and was about to fall off. None the less, it worked and that's why it was one of my favorites. It doesn't have to look pretty to work. (Plus your wench holder was pretty cool too ;)

868- Literally the first time I saw you climb, I thought you broke your climber. The fact that your arm breaks in half (looks like it does at least) every time your scale made it look cool.

4103- I first saw that scaler at the pre season event at 1741's place. It was a nice scissor lift.

3176- It was really cool seeing you guys work on it in the pits to it working on the field at state. I was really glad to see you climb.

I bet I missed an IN bot somewhere. That's all I can think of for now. I'll edit if I think of any more. To say the least, great job IN teams on scaling.

P.S. I was waiting all year for 1024 to turn your portcullis and cheval de frise mechanism into a scaler. I have no idea if that was ever apart of your plans but I figured that would have been the best place for it for a 179 type scaler.

My favorite this year was 1619's scaler. They only used it when they had to, so they were probably one of the more underrated scaling teams. When they were doing well, they went up very fast.

Cause ya know, there were so many climbs in GA......pretty sure I can count on one hand the teams with a consistent hanger.

I loved 1746's climber, but I'd have to say 610 has the best in the world this year. 2056 isn't too far off 610 either. 118's is still the coolest, but other climbs that I really liked this year were 1418, 1771, 2363, and 5546 (cause I'm pretty sure they had the best bottom sticker in the world).

Re: Best Scaling Bot This Season?

I can really appreciate the teams that planned to climb from day 1 of build season, and chose a consistent, although difficult to package method of climbing, like 2056, 3683, 1983, 1511, 3990, 639, and others. May not have been the coolest or most elegant systems, but they were consistent and it's very difficult to package systems like those alongside systems like a collector and shooter. Believe me, we tried on both 20 and 5254.

Re: Best Scaling Bot This Season?

I'd have to agree that 2056's compact climber design is really nice, yet their telescoping towers are quite wide-set. This can make lining up on the narrow climbing-bar more difficult for the driver, and we see them utilizing their human player in the spy box for that purpose. This could make their total climb process slightly slower and more finicky, compared to teams with a more narrow-set climber grasp or a more fool-proof line-up design such as 33's over-the-bar grasper.

hdurpos 18-05-2016 20:49

Ok, I hate to be sort of biased but team 4980 o think had an amazing scaling mechanism and it worked flawlessly every time after we added another air tank, it could've been better but as the student who designed this and was the lead on this part of the robot, I think I did a pretty good job, also it was my first year

I would say 2056 primarily because it was on their robot from the beginning and was very effective and fast.

Re: Best Scaling Bot This Season?

Personally i would say 1983, 254, 148, 2056.

I cannot tell you the amount of matches 1983 won because of their climber. It was lightning fast and i only ever saw them miss a few times.

254 only had theirs on for champs, so I think they go a little underrated, but boy was it easy to line up and it was speedy. Not the fastest, but fast.

148 was just 148, pure awesomeness. The quick thinking of their driveteam to abandon the scale in eliminations to let 1678 scale was smart. Their design was quick, and also allowd for the triple scale. I got to watch the 270 point match 10-15 feet from the field. They dominated the other teams human player and put in so many balls it was crazy!

2056 because they scaled fast from the beginning. They used it to make it to Einstein. Amazing robot design all the way around. Their climber was sleek and elegant design through looks and execution.

Just the concept of such a thing amazes me, but the fact that they built their robot light just to make it possible... It's too awesome.

Sorry to burst your theoretical bubble of safety, but isn't a climbing mechanism illegal unless there are bumpers on the extrusion? I think this is showed in rule G17.2.
