Uses for memory
 

Ok. You guys are a creative bunch. I have just acquired a few hundred megs of 30-pin memory. That's probably 20-30 ram modules. 30-pin memory is ancient so I have no real use for it. Any decorative/interesting ideas about how I could use it? If nothing else, I'll probably end up splitting them apart, attaching string to it and paint 84 on the chip then give them out at competitions. But why give away free stuff? What else can I do with them? :)

sew / duct-tape a big '84' on the back of your team shirt.

How well does RAM wash? I wouldn't think they'd take to kindly to my spin cycle :P Hmm...sewing through circuit board? Sounds tricky...

hack it into the isaac32 ;)

you'd probably have to hand wash it :)


Drill small holes along the edges first:) And to ward off any 'my sewing machine wont handle it', i'll say you have to hand-sew them too...

mmmm, old RAM is fun!

in my CISCO (computer networking) class, we've been doing our teacher some favors. mostly, my school has gotten numerous donations of old computers (P2, 200 - 300 Mhz, 2 gig HDs, 72 pin RAM, etc). my teacher takes the HD and CD-ROMs, we get anything else.

so, i'm running an old Pentium Pro (200 Mhz) computer as a second file server in my house (yes second). it also doubles as my "learning linux" computer (for now). the only problem, it's old, and currently has 80 MB of RAM (72-pin). that means just about anything but blackbox doesn't run very well on it. so, i noticed that in the majority of the computers, they have 72-pin RAM. i got three chips today (this was before i remembered that 72-pin must go in pairs, grr), and hopefully some more tomorrow. if no one needs the parts we have a habit of throwing them at each other, which kind of hurts. flying memory is definitly a working hazard :p.

Mmm...but I suffer from BHACS. (big hands and clumsy syndrome) So no sewing for me :P I guess I can't really say that...since I sewed the duct-tape onto my bookbag. Hrm. Drat :)

And what's that about 72-pin having to go in pairs? I don't know much about old computers :) And yes...getting hit with memory is painful. Circuit board is deceptively pointy. Oww.

have a door decorating contest in your school and use the old pc parts to make a creative christmas design. then wire some lights plug it in and vwhallla u have a x-mas decoration. throwing pentium chips could also hurt as they have 200 small pins on them. throwing cd's is fun. we play frisbee with them. espiciall the old win 95 discs

from what i know, 72-pin memory needs to go in pairs to work right, otherwise it won't recognize it or something (that's what my dad tells me, and he seems to know more about computer hardware than i do.

and yes, getting hit with RAM hurts, a lot (i was subject to that after a stupid senior thought it would be funny to throw it around).

unfortunately nobody bought me a camera so i cant take a picture, but you could do what i do. put your ram on your keychain. only one stick of course. its very eye catching as i always have someone asking what is that on ur keychain.

try it out if u dont like it well.... that sounds like a personal problem

Take some fishing line and tie each end to each other and then hook the top string to the board and make several rows of it and then you have a neat little device to hang in your doorway to your bedroom like those bead thingie's you can buy at novelty shops

A few years ago, our team aquired a bunch of old circuit test boards that weren't being used anymore - we cut them up and made nifty little keychains out of them! The were just 1.5"x1.5" squares with "TOBOR II" and "Team 93" painted on them. I'll dig around and see if I can find a picture of one for you :)

i just got more 72 pin RAM from old computers :). then i took some LEDs and switches out of the case, mostly for no reason, but hey, they're fun to play with! :D

Haha, that's almost what I do. I have a 15-pin male serial connector on my keychain, and it always gets peoples attention.

Of course ... it can be a little pointy if you lay down on the wrong side :)

well, if you ever come across any old hard drives, tie them onto fishing wire and make a wind chime. You can also tie dimms on the bottom of the platters to make it look even cooler. It anyone has heard platters clang it is a very nice sound. Give it to a geeky girl or your mom. They'd be impressed.

I have bins and bins of both 30 and 72 pin simms, as well as older PC-66 sdram. Good stuff, can do almost anything you want with it. Most creative thing i've seen involved lots of hot glue- a RAM man, 72 pin legs (2 sticks of double sided so he can stand), 30 pin torso, 30 pin arms, break an sdram module into 3 pieces along each of the tabs, use the shortest one for a head. Or get more creative and use old skool cache memory for a head. Real nice lookin desktop toy that just screams "imma nerd!"

use cache memory for hands/feet as well, use solder for fishing poles/anything else you'd want to do with it.

Cool. I like that idea. I may steal it :)

I may have to sell the plans on ebay ;)
