First-SME

What about FIRST-SME are we gonna vote again this year? I hope they have it again i think its neat having thoes little cards. Specially showing off to the kids how much lower my number is than thiers.

Amber H. 23-10-2002 16:37

Um....Could you please explain to the old lady who is new to all of this, what FIRST-SME is? If it is a part of FIRST culture, I'll need to know for the book.

Thanks.

Andrew Rudolph 23-10-2002 16:44

FIRST-SME is a partnership between FIRST and SME or the society of manufacturing engineers. Since 2000 they have given membership id cards to anyone who filled out a survey on thier website. On the card it has a FIRST code of ethics and the fron has your name, membership # and the date you applied. The website is

hope this helps

Thank you so much. All of these little details really help. Sometimes even if you don't mention them in your writing, all of those little things that go into creating characters and scenarios help make it more real when it finally hits the page. Knowing your subject is manditory.
Thanks again for your help.

i went to the sme sight yesterday hoping to register for a new card for this season, i guess i am too early for this year, oh well, cant wait to vote and get a new one, I crave the kickoff!

E Jones 234 23-10-2002 22:14

i hope we do get to vote on them again this year. they really are cool to show off, but we didn't really use them for much. i had the impression that we might need them to get into places or something like that. (although they make great straight edges for graphing in math class.)

Ryan Dognaux 23-10-2002 22:28

This year the cards should be able to open some "Secret Door at the End of the Hall that's been marked 'Do Not Enter'" kinda thing.

Absolutely. When I wear my card people ask what it's for and I don't have anything good to tell them. This would be brilliant!!!

Mike Schroeder 23-10-2002 22:55

I dont think we will vote again, they will probly use the same as last year

evulish 23-10-2002 23:50

Muah. I usually tend to get 2 or 3 SME cards per year. I sign up for it once. Then my dad signs me up for it. Then I sign up for it again since I can't remember if I did before. :P

Jon K. 24-10-2002 00:04

Last year they randomly sent both my dad and I teo cards each. We only signed up once though.

Like Ramen noodles and Moxie? :-P

E Jones 234 24-10-2002 19:34

i like that snack room idea! FOOD!

Andrew Rudolph 24-10-2002 19:38

Hows about everyone with a SME card gets to ride a segway! Thatd be sweet.

Ryan Dognaux 24-10-2002 20:15

Okay it'd be cool if the card had a barcode thing, and they could be scanned at consession stands and other things like that at Regionals and Nationals. Say each card came with 5 "Credits", which gave you a discount on food or other things. Each time the card is scanned, your credits would go down. I dunno I just thought it'd be a cool idea :D

Ragin_Kage 24-10-2002 20:57

I do like the barcode/credit idea, that would be cool, but i dont think we are going to nats, so, i dont know if i could use it, oh well, but i do like the snack room as well, yum

Ryan Dognaux 24-10-2002 22:24

Yeah and in addition to the barcode idea thing, like if you've won a certain award or a competition in the past, maybe you can get 10 credits instead of the normal 5, or something like that.

Gadget470 25-10-2002 11:47

dont forget the little guys

and sympathy credits for last place

E Jones 234 25-10-2002 12:57

i like this barcode idea thing! maybe we could get free stuff from vending machines too...

Wetzel 25-10-2002 13:30

FIRST is not having the money to do this.
Streamlined events...
The video screens or free food...
I say video screens.

And a punch ticket would be so much easier to implement.

The basic reason for the FIRST-SME cards is to gather statistics on participants. Corporate sponsors like to see real data on how many people are touched by FIRST, how many stick with it, where they go on to after School, etc. SME as volunteered to gather this data to assist FIRST in growing and getting sponsors.

For this reason, it is important to get as many of your team to register as possible to ensure the best data.

I keep my collection of cards on the wall above my desk at work.

They also have come in handy as a reminder to team members who temporarilly forget the ethics that are listed on the back. Sometimes just pointing to the card is enough to get someone back on track.

Indeed it would, but my barcode idea thing was so that it could be used year after year, therefore saving money in the long run

No. Intital costs to set up a database, buy scanning equipment, and seting them up at each event, and having someone who knows how to us it vs a holepunch and the normal line gaurd/assistant/general lacky.

And the whole mess that would result because of lost cards.

So its resuable, but that dosn't automaticly make it cheaper.

For better or worse, I still love her.

Yeah I guess you're right, that would be a hassle to do the barcode thing.

FRANK(WGH) 26-10-2002 16:40
