This ain't no disco...

Since now there will be no dancing party at the regionals
what do the Teams want to do on Friday night?

I just had a NYC Regional meeting and here are
the top items suggested-

1. Ultimate Frisbee games (Indoors)

2. RC car racing competition (doesn't everyone have one?)

3. basketball game (half court please)

4. Ping-pong/pool competition

5. Video gaming (any system!)

6. Ice skating (only because the NYC Regional has a ring)

What do you think?
:)

mtaman02 02-11-2002 20:29

all these ideas sound fun. can we choose one or can we do all. i unfortunately will be there on a saturday unless i can get days as for my team there will need something to do

things add to list of things to do.

Break Dancing to some Decent Music

Oh- Wait no Dancing Party. Oh well guess well have to compromise a bit

I won't be at NYC but definitely RC car racing. I actually have 8. I propose this idea for Friday night at LA. I will be there with an RC car if anyone wants to join me.:)

Everyone brings a TV and then we'll get a PS2 w/ DDR, XBox with Halo, and GCN with wireless (:D) controllers playing Smash Bros.

Ultimate Frisbee is like Lacrosse or a soccer game
using a frisbee. Goals on opposite ends of the playing
field and event number of player.

hum... possible game scenario for
the robot competition.. hum.
;)

Rob Colatutto 04-11-2002 16:06

rc would be awesome, and still remotely relevant to FIRST, i hope other regionals take up that idea. only problem, very limited number of channels for rc cars

Well not if everyone has good epuipment, cause i think there are fifty-somthing channels at 27mhz and 75mhz and then people just have crystals and make sure no one crosses over.

:P i know what ultimate frisbee is. I was just wondering how you could play it indoors. I have never heard of such a thing

Andrew Rudolph 04-11-2002 18:15

Well if the florida regional was still at KSC the parties were in teh saturn 5 building thats one massive building i think a game could get on in there...just watch for the poles.

Alex Forest 04-11-2002 19:34

well...i kinda have an inside link to some of the higher ups in charge of VCU, and i sorta convinced them to have inflateable boxing rings at that "social" *grin*

dixonij 04-11-2002 21:32

ULTIMATE FRISBEE ROCKS

that is one of the best sports created by man.
My dad was actually on the U.S.A. Worlds team in 1994 when they won the world championship. We had a 20 person frisbee throw going on with 20 frisbees at the Party at the VCU technology center. I smashed a frisbee with a well placed throw.(heeheehee)
anyway does anyone remember that thread where people submitted ideas for next years game? I posted something about using frisbees. that would be so cool

that's not true, i have a few R/C cars and trucks and they all have different channels. 27.195MHz, 27.225MHz...

I just bought a new RB Concepts racing engine that i'm gonna break in tonight. 1.35hp in a 9 pound truck!!!

Elgin Clock 05-11-2002 12:27

A little off topic but...

Do I correctly remember there was a team last year that went to play laser tag after NYC??
Does anyone know where that was?
If you know of a place please let me know.

Thanks

Laser tag would be a sweet team activity. By the way...is anyone else more than a little disappointed that there will be no dancing at this year's parties??

I can't say im disappointed at all, as a matter of fact.

Kristina 09-11-2002 02:38

Noooo, please not the DDR!

Oh, and even if all the RC cars are on the same channels, its very entertaining. We had an ASB activity called autotopia where we had people race cars but forgot to change the channels, it was hilarious!

By the way did anyone see the commercial with the guy playing DDR?? I think it was keds or some other shoe company!

Brant Bowen 10-11-2002 00:17

I have seen that commercial, but anyways

I am surprised that i haven't had anyone from around here
suggest something i heard quite a lot last year - Mountain Dew
Bowling? And if you want to entertain most of Cyber Blue 234,
you could probably just give us some decks of cards and tell us to go play euchre.

Wetzel 10-11-2002 00:27

Its a commercial for Sketchers.

So who can pass Can't Stop Falling in Love(Speed Mix) Doubbles Maniac?

I for one am glad there is no dance, at the NYC regional there just isn't enuff diversity in the music. Umm i dunno bout the laser tag at nyc, but i was playing soccer outside with the british team and that was alot of fun, i think ill vote for ice skating or if we could have a laser tag gme that would be sooo awesome

AKA President I believe.

dixonij 20-11-2002 14:06

(please dont close this thread brandon if this is considered breaking the rules)
ive never heardof it called that but the best position in jerk/@$$hole/President is the president, then vice preisdent, (depending on number)mayor, gopher, jerk/@$$hole

Johca_Gaorl 20-11-2002 14:11

Yep, we are talking about the same game it sounds like. I've noticed some games have slightly different rules and names depending on where you play them. We usually call it President, VP, ???, Scum. Shows you how things change depending on areas.

Amanda Morrison 20-11-2002 14:36

Our team was introduced to Egyptian Ratscrew (card game) this year. I think #71 would be willing to have a tournament. =)

I had learned how to play but now I forgot... Darn and that would have been cool

Elgin Clock 21-11-2002 17:45

I think the card game of Mao (pronounced Mow, rhymes with cow) would be more exciting to play!!

Alex Forest 05-12-2002 21:33

ERS tourney?!?!?!? time and place, ill be there...

Jeff Waegelin 06-12-2002 09:11

Ah yes, ERS. Along with Euchre, one of my favorite robotics card games...

Johca_Gaorl 06-12-2002 11:47

/me obviously needs to learn Euchre

Jeff Waegelin 06-12-2002 21:05

It's an interesting game. Most people outside Michigan and surrounding states don't know it. I don't know why, but it's sorta peculiar to this area. It's hard to learn, but easy to play once you get past two or three of the crazy rules.

Alex Forest 07-12-2002 13:25

sounds like 3 card, where theres like a billion different rules...

DanL 09-12-2002 23:42

*looks at wall, sees 6 assorted frisbees hanging up*

I'd be game for some ultimate, just indoors there isn't exactly a lot of room for it. Unless some huge indoor gym was found, I'm sure many people would be able to easily throw the disc the length of the playing area. But then again, if you altered the rules and played in raquet-ball style, I'm sure eventually people would figure out how to skim it off the walls... we're all smart peopel here... there's gotta be a way to do it.

As for ERS, thats the sure-fire way of limiting your deck's life expectancy to oh, about 5 games or so. Mao is the game where you have to create all sorts of rules for playing cards, right? That game gets pretty fun as long as you have a buncha creative people playing. And on the topic of card games, what about BS or Mafia? I learned all these games from the people at this program I did during the summer - lemme tell you, if you have the right people playing some of these games, they're tons of fun.

As for other activities that we can do instead of those silly dance-thingamahoosits, I'm suprised no one mentioned hackey-sac tournaments. I know that for SBPLI, the idea has been tossed around (get it? hackey-sac? tossed around? HAHAHAhahaha.... *gunshot*), but I'm not sure what ever came out of it.

Johca_Gaorl 10-12-2002 12:18

Mafia is great when you have a relatively large group (7+) Hacky-Sack would be fun too, even though I suck.

Last year there were those large circles of hackey sac players while everyone else was eating/Dancing. SO it wouldnt suprise me if a few circles popped up instead.

PacificSunChica 24-12-2002 01:41

Why are the dance parties cancelled?

Gope 24-12-2002 01:47

HALO

We should have a 4v4 Halo tournament....that would be so cool. each team's best players vrs the others, who cares about the robots, bloodgulch CTF all the way!

Disclaimer: All mention of the importance of the robots in FIRST should be disregarded as they represent the momentary rantings of the person watching you through your computer screen.

Hey Rich, (Mr. Wong) think you can put a bug in some one's ear (see title)?

Johca_Gaorl 02-01-2003 19:47

Does anyone else hate halo? Cause I can't stand it really, it just doesn't appeal to me. Now Timesplitters 2, is in my opinion the best FPS ever!

Ben Mitchell 09-01-2003 05:51

LAN Party.

My game of choice is Day of Defeat. We could even form little clans just for the night, and play a little tourney.

Chubtoad 09-01-2003 09:32

ROBOTICS LAN PARTY..... lets see why this would work

Robotics Rocks; LAN partys Rock..... Combine the too... you get robots with wwII tanks and quake railguns but NO AWP!!!!

In other idea areas... Magic The Gathering?

Go Go Robot Go!

Robotics LAN party, does this seem cliche or stereotypical to anyone else? Still a good idea, just an observation.

M:TG, I haven't played that in a long time, maybe if I remember to build a deck or a few.

Team 122 (or at least a few select members) will be coming with the mini cars and a mini bike possibly even some real sized R/C cars.

Forsaken85 29-01-2003 19:53

Hey why not this?

Hey since everyones got a computer, why not get a lan party up and start having massive computer gaming experiences with games like: Counter Strike (doesn't everyone play), Battlefield, starcraft, warcraft3, tribes, unreal tornument 2003, red alert series, and many other games that are avalbile. SO not a bad idea eh, just need a cable connection and lots or wire and a couple of routers. latter Go team 303:cool:

evulish 29-01-2003 20:03

Why do you need a cable modem? And I dunno about you guys, but I don't plan on hauling my tower and monitor to competitions. I'm going to attempt to pack everything in a carry-on...don't think my computer will fit :D

Johca_Gaorl 29-01-2003 22:26

/me is not bringing a 19" monitor and mid-tower to Houston, nu uh. I have a router you could use if there wasn't already 3 comps and a printer hooked to it...

Ben Mitchell 02-02-2003 18:35

LAN party = not place to pick up chicks. ;)

And no way am I getting my tower and moniter through Newark Airport - it's heavy, expensive, delicate, and computer hardware has a tendency to get stolen.

johnscans 02-02-2003 19:45

westhampton has some good b players smithtown. this could turn into a preety intense game in front of all of long island.

off that topic lan party would be fun. but my rig isnt gettin trucked donw to houston. no sir-e-bob. m:tg is oldskool, mayb ill remake the coutnerspell deckm c if it still has got its old magic. how about a eating contest for every teams best eater. id like to c who could beat our man. haha. i need sleep

Johca_Gaorl 02-02-2003 23:43

does ultimate 'b = ultimate frisbee?

Tilica 04-02-2003 08:29

challenge...

well... since we will have no parties...
I suggest a soccer challenge... at least at our regional (philadelphia)... brazilians vs. americans... :D

what do you think?

LBK Rules 04-02-2003 09:09

I say we watch The Matrix on the projector.

Post.Edit = "I am going to VCU."
