Fall Workshops At Capital City Classic

Team 1678 is proud to announce our 3rd annual fall workshops! These workshops will be run during Capital City Classic, and cover all aspects of a FRC team, including mechanical, programming, electrical, business, and leadership. There will be 3 one hour sections of workshops: one section on Friday, and two on Saturday.

Section one will be Friday Oct 21 at 7pm-8pm
Section two will be Saturday Oct 22 at 12:30pm-1:30pm
Section three will be Saturday Oct 22 at 5pm-6pm

Workshop Schedule:

Section 1
  • Mechanical Design: Learn about 1678's mechanical design process, from the initial design decisions and constraints, to the CAD that ties it together.
  • System Modeling: Learn about motor models, reading VexPro motor datasheets, and follow along as we model a simple elevator. Presented by Austin Schuh, a 971 programming mentor.
  • Public Relations and Team Image: In this workshop, viewers will learn how to connect their team to the community through various communication and media channels
  • Student Leadership - From Students to Students: Learn all about how to manage a FRC team as a student, from shaping team culture, to how to structure a team.

Section 2
  • roboRIO and Sensors: This workshop will cover the reasons for, and implementations of, types of sensors. It will compare types of sensors in terms of cost, accuracy, and optimum conditions. This workshop will also review the inputs and outputs of the RoboRIO in terms of the electrical point of view.
  • Scouting System Development: In this workshop, Citrus Circuits will describe the genesis and framing of its scouting system, the analytic principles used for collecting and processing data and observations, the programming used to develop the system, and the use of the results for in-match strategy and elimination round drafting.
  • Districts 101: Heard about Districts but not quite sure how they work? Excited for Districts in California and want to learn how you can help? We'll be reviewing these topics and more, come with your questions, as we hope to have a lengthy Q and A.
  • Keys to a Successful Rookie Season: Learn the fundamentals to a successful rookie season. Presented by members of Team 5940, the 2016 Silicon Valley Regional Rookie All-Star and Curie Quarterfinalist.
  • Test Driven Development Pt 1: Learn how to debug code in simulation, and follow along as it's tested in simulation, and then on a physical robot. Presented by Austin Schuh, a 971 programming mentor.
  • Advanced Solidworks: Methods to streamline your season and get the maximum value out of your 3d Design. Presented by 973's Lead Mentor, Adam Heard.

Section 3
  • Strategic Design: Learn to "work smarter" as we explore how Strategic Design can simplify your build process and help your team meet its goals.
  • Fabrication and Prototyping: A look into the mechanical fabrication and prototyping processes. This entails how to be efficient with the machines as well as tips and tricks on how to make the fabrication and prototyping processes easier.
  • Robot Wiring: Teams will receive an overview of basic FRC electronics and pneumatics components. We will discuss possible configurations for neat, easily diagnose-able, and effective layouts for these components, as well as some methods for identifying and solving electrical or pneumatic issues.
  • Managing a Budget: Learn all aspects of how to manage a budget, as well as some helpful financial tips for FRC teams.
  • Test Driven Development Pt 2: Learn how to debug code in simulation, and follow along as it's tested in simulation, and then on a physical robot. Presented by Austin Schuh, a 971 programming mentor.
  • Motor Sizing: How to pick motors and gear ratios for various mechanisms. Presented by 973's Lead Mentor, Adam Heard.

This is a fantastic lineup. Are there any plans to record the workshops?

Alex and I are extremely excited to present this workshop! We're honored to be presenting alongside of such esteemed mentors and students. If you are a pre-rookie team, mentoring one, or just interested please come by! We'll be covering everything from business plans and team organization to mechanical design and tool purchasing.

CCC this year is looking awesome!

They were last year, so I assume they will be this year as well. Someone from 1678 should be able to give a more definite answer however.

We will record all of the workshops, and release the videos and slides for all of the presentations, along with any other materials the presenters have (code, links, etc).
