PNW 2017 Home events
For the first time that I've seen FIRSTWA has publicly released which teams are assigned what home event. See here: https://www.firstwa.org/Team-Resourc...erence-Reports
So here are some statistics about them: Total teams: 158 Home is one that earned points at last year: 113 Code:

Re: PNW 2017 Home events
Eric,
The teams that did not earn 2016 points in their 2017 home event is an odd statistic. Most of the teams that didn't earn points in their 2016 week 5 Home Event (Auburn, Clackamas) were due to it being a third event. Obviously anyone selecting Lake Oswego as a home event this year would make this list as well. |

I'm not sure that I understand your comment about Auburn and Clackamas. Here's what it looks like to me: Code:

Re: PNW 2017 Home events
A bunch of those didn't attend Auburn teams were at district championships. It's really a week 5 event issue.
If you look there are a few teams that helped fill out an event the prior week, and thus couldn't attend as it would have been a fourth event. 1983 & 5803, others? Some Teams may have opted not to travel remote to what would have been a third event when they were already qualified for districts. |

Is there a rule against doing a 4th district event? This is the first I've heard. I could definately see nobody wanting to do a 4th though. It seems that the two teams that you mentioned (1983 and 5803) are the only two to which this would have applied. Interestingly, all of the those teams that weren't signed up for Auburn last year went to at least one event that was significantly further away from them, either Central Washington or Philomath. This is probably a good time to add: My team has gone to Auburn the last two years in a row and very much enjoyed it both times. They did a total rebuild of the facility before last year and it came out beautifully. The only downside is the distance between the pits and the gym, but in my mind this makes it good practice for worlds. We probably would have signed up again this year except that we were wary of doing 3 travel events. |
Re: PNW 2017 Home events
There are district provisions to add a third event for an additional $1000. There are no provisions for a fourth event.
I assume the “home event” is just the initial registration request. I really look at the two Auburn Events, and Wilsonville & Oregon City pairs as the same team geographic pools, just different weeks. Philomath has had attendance size issues. Last year to make this event viable; IRS, Skunks, Bear Metal, Lions, High Tekerz and Apex all traveled from the Puget Sound to help bring this event up to 30 teams. Which helps explain some of the distance traveled. Some teams will minimize travel & costs and just do the closest events. Other’s will choose to try out further away events. We’re likely the only Puget Sound team to attend one Oregon event each year of the district model. - Wilsonville (2015 & 2017), Oregon City (2014), and Philomath (2016). Guess will have to add Lake Oswego at some point! |

Home events are assigned quasi-geographically, and they seem to make sense for the most part. However, there isn't any definite criteria published and thing that seems to be 100% consistent is that a team hosting an event gets that as their home. From a travel standpoint, I agree that the Auburn and Auburn Mountainview events are interchangable, and that the same is true for Oregon City and Wilsonville. Interestingly, the new Lake Oswego event is also really close to both Oregon City and Wilsonville - if you were driving South from Washington just get off the freeway 10 minutes earlier. We're going to look forward to seeing your team and your robot next year. Will it go back to being round? I think we've found that we like to do about one trip to Washington every year, so assuming that we make it to district championships again we'll have met our quota. |
