Wow. That's somewhat startling. 1/4 of teams don't show up for initial registration opening. I never knew that.

Do you have any stats on percentage of last year's rookies that have not yet shown up for year 2?

~42% of 2nd year teams (last season's rookies) have not signed up for an event yet (167).

and in case you were going to ask ...

Last year at this time (given that this year's registration is a bit wonky)
~46% of 2nd year teams had not registered.

I think they are still slow starters.
My own local 2nd year team is still trying to get a new Alternate Contact & YPP in order to get registered.

Remember that between 9% and 6% will not return this season and that means <20% of teams that are actually planning to return haven't been heard from.

Hey Mark, can you give us the list of resurrected vets and where the new vets are from? Thanks.

For a while it appeared that 6330 was a revival of 2625, being named "2625 - Arc Angels", but they seem to have changed their team name after realizing that they didn't get their old number.

They probably met the criteria for a Rookie Team instead of a returning veteran team. Honestly if I was in their shoes I would rather come in as a rookie then a veteran especially in a district system when I get +10 points just for existing.

Hrm. The reserve capacity for all FiM districts was just increased significantly, taking the open capacity for almost all events down by a few spots. Southfield went from having 10 reserve to 19 reserve. Midland and Traverse City both went from single open to zero, West Michigan went from eight open to one, and Center Line went from 11 open to zero.

That changes our plans a bit.

Second district event registration that opened at noon EST today went very smoothly for me. MOE 365 registered for the MAR Seneca event.

I wanted to share as positive feedback to FIRST from my perspective.

Thanks!

Did the event(s) fill up on you? It seems that several filled to their (low) capacity, whereas ones like LSSU still have 7 (or is it 5?) slots open.

Idk man. Having a low number is definitely a plus for pick lists. The perception of experience is almost as powerful as the experience itself. Plus that +10 pts goes away in full in only 2 years. Whereas you keep the number indefinitely.

Registration is up about 3% over last year at this point in registration.

Here are two three revised registration progression plots of the delayed opening.
The first just jumps (pretty much a straight line) from the morning after the late registration opening to corresponding surge markers that are present every year.
The second is the more accurate one that simply slides the opening day as Jon suggested earlier. Just plotting the actual delayed date looks better, but makes it harder to see the correlation between that day-early District arc and the 2012 regular arc.
The third uses the real dates for registration who's start dates spread over a couple of weeks in the past decade. Mile-marker events such as 2nd District opening and unrestricted Regionals, even US holidays are uncorrelated giving subsequent years a slanted look. It's most noticeable between the light green 2016 line (earliest registration ever opened) and the white 2017 plot (latest it ever opened).

The first plot variation better compares the fast fingers on the first day, while still correlating with the standard markers (where the surges are every year), such as the 2nd District event registration day where a lot of MI teams come out of hiding.

See if this is understandable and give me your preference.
I played with stretching the interpolation, but that didn't look much different than a straight line.

Jon Stratis 14-10-2016 12:24

Re: Registration 2017

Ok, I've rewritten this like 5 times, I keep going back and forth.

The first one could be a useful comparison next year with the new preference system Frank has talked about in the blog - does the introduction of a new system for initial event registration significantly change how registration goes? But at the same time, I feel like it probably overstates what would have happened if registration proceeded normally this year, and could lead to false conclusions.

The second one I like for the simple fact that it represents reality. It shows that, despite being a week late, the initial surge "made up" for that lost week of registration immediately.

Looking at these graphs today, I was struck with a burning desire to see a third graph (or a third and fourth), one showing the difference, day to day, in registrations between years. So one line that shows (2017-2016), another for (2016-2015), etc. each day as registration proceeds. Does that difference generally stay the same? Does it increase at a predictable rate? Are there sudden surges some years that we can't explain? And, perhaps most appropriately, how does it show the difference between this year and last year?

Mark McLeod 14-10-2016 12:41

Re: Registration 2017

The second plot is not actually reality either, so you may want to see a fully uncorrected plot.

Opening day in the 2000's up until about 2014 was typically halfway between this year's delayed opening and last year's opening. That's why I've been using Oct 3 as a normalized starting point for past years.

Some of the teams on your list, for example 3509, didn't play last year (or in 2015 either) that I can see.
I'm only counting teams who played last season.

From your list 3509, 4995, 5233, 6031, 6080, 6115, 6151 didn't play last season

5525 should be on your list but isn't (they played last year but aren't on an event list yet for this season).

Mark,
Palmetto initial registration of 29 to date seems much lower than I remembered from this time last year. Thought we were greater than 40 after first registration and at capacity after second registration.

Do you have that data?

I'm not seeing what you're seeing.

The team listings on frc-events.firstinspires.org for FLWP and OHSP have both teams (6384 and 6435) listed at both events:
https://frc-events.firstinspires.org/2017/FLWP
https://frc-events.firstinspires.org/2017/OHSP

Those pages show to be last modified on Oct 14 and Oct 11, so it seems like the inconsistency has been around for a few days. I'd assume the lasso page Brain linked above is correct since teams haven't registered for second events yet.

This one will probably fix itself tomorrow once more teams register and caches clear on FIRST's side and it propagates to TBA

Question:
Last year (or the year before) when 2nd event opened, I would see a color code for the events telling me at what level they were available or wait-listed.

Yellow was something like "close to full", orange was "short waitlist", and red was "forget about it, you're not getting a spot."

Is something like that happening this year? I don't want to add our team to the waitlist for an event listed as 0 available if there are 30 other teams doing the same thing.

Also, do we have any expectation that any additional capacity will be added for 2nd round registration opening today? Many events are below their attendance level from last year, but I'm wondering if all of those spots are held by the RDs for special entry.

Almost all events are below their actual capacity so that RDs can hold for rookies and then local teams. I've personally confirmed this for Smoky Mountains and a Miami Valley organizer confirmed it in their thread. I'd expect most regionals to have an actual capacity of around 50.

Whether any more are added today, who knows. I would guess no because we'll still see rookies trickling in to register.

Now the event just offers "Waitlist". No grades of coloration related to how deep the waitlist is.
After going on the waitlist, in my team's list of events the term "waitlist" is colored yellow.

I got into my event, on wait list. But I don't know how to get on the waitlist for Champs. The recent email from FIRST said:

Veteran Team Championship Waitlist Registration, will open at 12:00 pm (noon) Eastern Time on Thursday, 10/27. We will provide information about how the Championship waitlists will work shortly.

Any clues?

Still working for me.

I got into Arizona West within about 7-8 seconds after opening. When I checked at about 29 seconds, the other spot was gone too. Who is the other lucky winner of the only other available spot at AZ West this morning? Show yourself!

This has really gotten to the point of even timing your breathing and monitoring your pulse. I had my finger positioned on the mouse button, and the cursor over the link, and I was able to achieve the result I was going for. It's exhilarating, but nerve-wracking at the same time. Honestly, had I needed to sneeze at this moment of time, we would likely not be playing in Arizona.

I'm glad I got in before 12:02 pm, because I've never seen Buckeye fill up this fast before. Team 451 is going.

I guess with all of us in the Ohio area getting walled in by districts, there were only 3 options for teams who need to stay local, Miami Valley, Greater Pittsburgh, and Buckeye - and MV and P-burgh are on back-to-back weeks.

No, because the RD picks teams off the waitlist based on whatever their particular priorities are. Rookie teams, teams without an existing regional will get priority over teams trying to get into a second regional.

Teams that promise lots of volunteers might get additional priority depending on the event.

You may have been first on the list, doesn't mean a thing about when you'll be first off it.

We got into the page for Tech valley within the first ten seconds after noon, and it was already on waitlist. Since there were only 19 teams registered before today, I'm assuming it didn't fill up to 36 teams in those ten seconds, and that the capacity was still set to be low for now.

So I assume it's currently set at 22 teams (19 in there before today plus the three open spots) so I would assume that the capacity increase should come soon?

There were seventeen spots open for Buckeye at noon. We got one of them at noon + 2s, at which point there were four. Then none at noon + 13 s.

Finger Lakes was our first registration, but I checked it at noon + 17 seconds just to see and it was full, too.

Another reason for Buckeye filling up is that with Pittsburgh, Finger Lakes, and Tech Valley on the same weekend, Buckeye is by far the best second event for Western New York teams. There are 13 New York teams currently signed up for Buckeye, with many of them signing up for Buckeye as their first event.

Hawaii will most definitely fill up.
With a great number of teams west of Hawaii from Asia, many international teams end up signing up to attend. We usually sign up for Hawaii last also.
Its been close to a 40 team event in recent years.
The other part is Hawaii teams are so laxed is signing up the minute its available.

Unfortunately, it looks like Tennessee's oldest team, 547, is only registered for Rocket City. (I can't blame them, Rocket City is much closer for them than SMR.) Unofficially, the no. of Australia teams will grow tremendously in the next few years and some of the groups in China have mentioned a goal of 400 teams in the next few years. If there is a country that can do it, China certainly can and will with govt. support.
I would predict that a good no. of teams will still want to come to the Hawaii event.

The FIRST team database is acting a bit wacky this morning, so today's results will be spotty.
It recognizes a query session for only 8 seconds total, so if you try to flip through a list of teams you have 8 seconds to reach the end of it.

That's probably going to impact Aren's event summary updates.

P.S.
Seems fine now. I wonder f it was related to the DOS attack yesterday on the server farm in NH.

1374 is a new number and I listed them as a new vet in the system.
I haven't looked yet to see where they (and most of the other new vets) might have come from or associated teams they might have been in the past. Maybe I'll start on that today.

The one team previously registered for Mexico City has now been moved onto the Toluca roster.

At noon the FIRST API was shutdown for open registration.

South Florida gained the most teams (9) at noon open registration-onto the roster at least. Scattered gains elsewhere.
