It's interesting to me that there was a relatively large growth, and/or low attrition after 2015, whereas this year seems to have a larger attrition rate. Can we conclude that Recycle Rush was better than Stronghold for team retention?

I don't think you can conclude that just yet. We're still missing all the Israeli teams, which should have a significant impact on the 299 missing vets we currently have. Mark's bar graph is the best way to run that comparison, once all the data is in. The line graph doesn't break out retention versus rookies.

Add into it that there's WAY too much that goes into retention/growth to make that claim. We'd have to account for economic conditions, grants, and probably a dozen things I haven't even thought of.

Re: Registration 2017

Israeli teams have begun to register.
Since it is now 4:30am their local time, I imagine they are being cleared one by one from waitlists by an insomniac there or by a late nighter at FIRST HQ.

That just took us past the 3300 team mark.

59 teams from Israel got moved to event lists.
6 Israeli rookie teams showing now.
9 vets from there are still missing.

P.S.
Why aren't the blue banners for Israel in Hebrew?

After the Israeli contingent was entered:

3336 total teams (at the moment)
26 resurrected vets
12 new "vets"
412 Rookie teams
244 missing vets-7.8% attrition (or calculated another way: missing - resurrected =~ 7.0% overall attrition)
6.6% growth

Returns are very similar to 2015 numbers-not as good as the 2016 season.

Here's another look at team retention (adjusted to include the effect of resurrected vets who dropped out in prior years).
And the registration plot showing that knee in the curve we've been waiting for.

I find it really interesting just how stable a lot of these numbers are over the years. The growth has been very linear, the team retention has been very stable since 2000 (barring the raise in registration costs for 2005), and the timelines of team registration have been relatively consistent. FRC has changed a lot over the years and existed through some very tumultuous times, but the participation and interest in FRC has remained impressively unchanged.

Maybe because some of the teams speak Arabic?

More of a "Ain't goin' out like that!" attitude, I think.

There are 3 teams from India I am so excited. Sadly all qualify to Houston, so i won't be able to meet them.

I find it interesting that all three Indian teams are from pretty far north. Do you know how those teams were formed?

Four India teams now.
You can ask Team 3132 about the one they helped start.
6024 started last year and might have spread the word.

New Delhi, DL India --- G D Goenka ----- 6578
Mumbai, MH India ----- Neighborhood Group ----- 6024
Mumbai, MH India ----- DSB International School ----- 6511
Kolkata, WB India ----- FRC Team 3132 & South City International School ----- 6577

Still a 45 hour drive to visit each team.

You could visit NY Tech Valley or Hudson Valley to meet one of them, not too far from Ontario.

So, since registration closed on November 28 and our initial payments were due, there remains a lot of activity bringing teams in off the waitlists to events. It's still going on, so this is just a snapshot.

Between Nov 28 and now:

Added
84 - veteran teams
46 - rookie teams

Lost
16 - veteran teams
7 -- rookie teams

We are right around the historical high point that registration always reaches before it begins to drop back.
  • 28 resurrected vets
  • 8 new vet teams
  • 428 rookies
  • 2898 returning veterans
  • 232 teams missing from last season (7.4%)
Coincidentally, we also have 7.4% growth at this point over last season's final total.
However, we are only showing 5.7% growth over this same date last year.

Some of the District wait lists have been cleared for Inter District teams. So excited to be heading out to SW Virginia Week 1!

Add Danish as one of the official languages spoken by 2017 FRC teams.
A different Danish team than the community one from last year. This one is headed for Las Vegas.

Wonder if they'll play saxophone for their national anthem like the team last year?
