Brunswick Eruption Results and Thanks

It is with great honor that I announce the winners of the first Brunswick Eruption-

271

341

25

Thank you to 341 and 271 for being great partners and always backing up the Scorpion full force.
Also, thank you to team 303, our gracious cohosts, for all of their help setting up the field and dismanteling.

Was the competition fun? Well-ran? What was the best moments- or the worse? Your thoughts are welcome on this matter. As it is our first, we are looking for ways to improve.

Mike8519 23-11-2002 20:41

One of my personal favorite moments was when 56 and us (303) were competing in the strength compeition and both of us ended up at 45 degree angles from the carpet with the goal suspended a good 7-8 inches off the ground :D .

It was a well ran event with the exception of a few technical issues. And the awards were awesome :) .

Dan-o 23-11-2002 22:01

It was cool!

The Competition was great!

I was very happy to be able to attend the Brunswick Eruption. The trophies were awesome!

You said you were looking for suggestions to improve the competition for next year. The only thing i can think of is making the "fun rounds" a little shorter. They really made the competition drag. Other than that, it was a great competition.

Congrats to #4 alliance (341,25,and 271). Also, thanks you teams 224 and 651 for being our alliance partners. We put up a good fight in the finals.

Thanks to Mr. Volcano for letting me keep the shirt. It will not be tortured in anyway.

Too bad i won't be in the competition next year.

Wayne C. 23-11-2002 22:17

Heres the final rundown of all the awards won today at BE. I will post photos as I can edit the. I have 150 disks worth.

Anyway-

Kids Favorite Robot- 11
Ladies Favorite Robot - 303
Crowd's Favorite Robot- 87
Judges Favorite Robot- 365
Ladies Rounds Winners- 87, 651
Drag Racing Winner- 293
Strongest Robot - 869
Runners Up Alliance- 224,365 and 651
Champions- 25,271,341

I personally would like to thank all of you for your patience and great participation. In the morning especially, with two teams not appearing, it was a scramble to get the event going. While I didn't see much of the competition I did hear it!! Dr. Kamen told us that we were louder than the Rutgers Regional.

I hope everyone had a good time. Thanks for supporting our rookie team freinds at 1089 too in their 50/50. Somebody went home with a nice pocket full of the green stuff.

I am told there will be a program on the event on Cablevision the week of Dec 3. I will post more on this as it comes up.

And thanks to our alliance partners 271 and 341. We played our way up through the wildcard rounds and showed them what we had. The finals were quite a battle and you all played admirably.

I hope everybody left happy and as friends. I can tell you this- the new season is going to be a great one!!!

WC

Wayne C. 23-11-2002 22:34

Hey- if anyone has a photo of the infamous "pedestal round" in the strength battle, please post it!! That was amazing.

For those who missed it two robots, 303 and 56 in the "Sumo" type match, apparently applied just the right amount of pressure at just the right timing for both robots to tip backwards on their chassis lifting the goal about a foot off the ground and effectively pinning them both backwards with their wheels spinning in the air. 303 eventually won the match because the marker for the goal was about 3 inches moved in their direction but you couldn't do that again if you planned it. Bizarre.

It took both teams and the field crew lifting the goals to get the two disengaged.

Why do these things seem to happen to 303? :D

purplehaze357 23-11-2002 22:49

I would like to congratulate teams 25 and 341 on their victory, we were back with the other half of wisahickons team at Tech Fest....which was amazing....CoNgRaTs....

*claps*

Ragin_Kage 23-11-2002 23:28

I had such a great day today, the competition was awesome, not to mention the strength battles, 303 and 56 match was stellar...unfourtunatly we only made it to the 7th seed but it was still a blast...look forward to the upcoming season...GREAT TROPHIES!

Chubtoad 24-11-2002 00:47

Thank you.

The compeitition was a lot of fun

This compeitition helped our team a lot because it taught a lot of the freshman and other new comers what FIRST is about, and we had several new people drive the robot which gave them a first hand experience of how hard it usually is. It also taught me how much teaching I'm going to be doing this year (being a senior)

I'd like to thank team 25 and 341 for being amazing.

The following is my opinion, not my teams.

I felt like we were leeches because obviously we were pretty much forced onto you guys and we had not been doing the best today mostly do to the fact that we were trying new people as well the last two events the robot had done were PR events outside in which we pretty much ran it to the ground. I really felt bad because I know what it is like to see a robot on an alliance that doesn't do anything, get the big prize because they got picked. But when we moved MOE the last round I felt that we deserved a little part of that amazingly cool trophy we got.
So pretty much what I'm saying is you guys rock!
oh yeah THE TROPHIES ROCK!

The compeition was a whole lot of fun though. This was our 7th one this year and it was just as good as the first, maybe even better!

See you both at the Chesapeake regional!

Ashley Weed 24-11-2002 01:06

Congrats to the Scorpion and team 25.... you guys deserve it... you are an awesome team with an awesome robot. Best of luck to you in the future.... see you next year!

Congrats to Miss Daisy and 341! You guys did it.... all five competitions.... PARC, NASA/MD, Duel, Ramp Riot, and Eruption!

Matrix3000k 24-11-2002 07:01

What a way to go

well i just wanna say with the 7 years that i have been doing this i must say tha Bart was right on one thing..... and that is that we were louder than we were when we werer at RU. i just wanna thank all the teams that came out and made this hole event successful. all of you guys are great. i enjoy Djing the event for you and i hope you guys enjoyed the music. but hey it does not stop here. There is a whole new season comming up in a couple of months and more fun is goin go be involved. so congrats to everyone and i wish all of you best of luck in this years competition!!!

Wayne C. 24-11-2002 09:31

Hey Chubtoad-

You gotta be kidding about the last rounds! Moving Moe is no mean feat. If your machine didn't block them in place whenever we got back to make a run at the turning goal we could never have moved anybody. As we backed off to run at the goal they could have shot forward. They almost did. Remember- we can't go deliberately crashing into the arms in light of deliberate damage.

We know from our last experience with Moe that it takes two to move the monster. Once they anchor their grippers it is hard to move them at all. You have no reason to regret.

Thanks for being our partner. You deserve the trophy as much as the rest of us.

(PS- thanks for all the nice compliments from everybody on the trophies. You all know we have the "Aloha from NJ" theme. In 1999 we wanted to getthe team to Orlando for the first time and that was a part of our positive mindset transition. So Hawaiian has become a part of our team identity
The tikis on top are from a distributer in Honolulu. They are plastic, not wood, but I can't tell easily. Jesse Perry ( the crazy midfield dancer Mr. Volcano runner up) made the bases in his shop class. The plaques (sorry if they are loose) were engraved in the metal shop at BMS. The project was a team effort.

Oddly- team 25 probably does more business in Honolulu than in NJ. The shirt manufacturer, Royal Hawaiian Creations, has been a supporter of ours for the last 5 years and we send them pix of our events and accomplishments. From what I hear they are as much a part of the team as we are and they post the team group shots all around the factory.

Keith Chester 24-11-2002 09:40

With the scorpion finally retired, I'd like to also thank previous finalist partners:

303
102
87
84
357
271
and of course, last but not least, 341.

Nothing could have been done without ANY of you, as the finals are always a kamikazee battle for the final trophy. How can I ever forget now the tristate triangle with 303 and 102.
The underdog partnership with 87? Team 84 and 357 showing us exactly what power is as they dragged us across the line to score for our team? 341's excellent job at keeping moe at bay by themselves? 271's vital assistance in pushing back the monster of MOE? None of it shall ever disappear from my memory. What a first season. Thank you all!

That was amazing - I think the planets must have been aligned properly or something! :D I don't think we could make that happen again if we wanted to.

That was a fun competition. Thanks Team 25!!

Firewolf 24-11-2002 11:41

considering the fact that I'm still in a daze, and I have so much more to do today, I'll try to keep this short...

ThankYouThankYouThankYou
everyone, putting it together, being there, coming apart on the feild (some of those rounds were violent, it was like a robotic war movie), for those few that danced and got into it all.
at times of the day I caught my self saying 'where am I? this isn't my school'
gym will never be the same again:D
Thank you (I'd make a list, but not only would it be really long, i don't want to forget anyone by accident, but you know who you all are!!!!)

((alright, so it isn't as short as I planed, but I can't help my exictment!!!)

Mike Schroeder 24-11-2002 13:15

Hey I think the competition went well all the teams were great, but the one thing i liked was that Volcano guy I cant remember his name

But on a more personal note i would like to thank the Mr. Cokeley, and Mr Kloberg (sp?) w/o them it wouldnot have happened at all

dixonij 24-11-2002 13:53

dont worry everyone. one of my adivsors got a picture of the amazing floating goal! ill try and get it from him and post it.

btw... why wasnt there an award for the 1st place seed?!? the first time 87 is 1st after the qualification rounds and we dont get any hardware. oh well, we still were fan favorites and we actually have pretty darn good women drivers! if anyone was wondering why our johnson was put up so early, the switchbox operator accidently hit the VI-arm switch. anyway two pieces of hardware is nice enough. oh if anyone wants any of our flame shirts, wait until next season if we retire those shirts.

-Ian
I grabbed our fan favorite trophy and ran off the field before my whole team got up there... hehehe

Chubtoad 24-11-2002 15:25

Does anyone have a list of the results of the Seeding matches? Like a full list cause I know were weren't near the top

Wayne C. 24-11-2002 17:25

If you PM Firewolf or TJRage they can probably give you the list. But I know right now that the actual docs are in a box with all the "stuff" from the competition and we probably won't get to clean it up until the Wednesday after next.

Eruption Thoughts

On behalf of MOEHawk and all the Miracle Workerz, I want to thank all involved in the Brunswick Eruption event. We were questioning whether or not to attend, and we are glad we made the right decision (with a heavy bit of coersion from Teams 25 and 303). The Eruption event was a nice capper to a very active post-season.

I wanted to provide some feedback on the event.

THE GOOD

* Facilities were very nice. Food area was excellent. Line moved very swiftly. Food prices were good. Half-price sale was great.

* Sound system was terrific. Matrix3000 was a great DJ. We love the sound effects and hope to borrow them for Duel on the Delaware 2003 (on Columbus Day weekend next year - SHAMELESS PLUG!).

* Pit area was well laid out - plenty of room for teams to "spread their wings"

* Trophies were very creative and distinct. The whole theme was terrific. Nice to have multiple awards and those judged by attendees.

* Really liked the drag racing, women's round, and the strength round. Well thought out.

* Volunteers overall were very helpful.

THE NOT-SO-GOOD

* Day was very long. For teams like ours who had to travel two+ hours to attend, a 5:00PM end would have been great.

- suggestions:
only have 1-2 special rounds and keep them fast-moving.

Wayne C. 25-11-2002 08:33

Time flies when you're having fun?

I agree with you John. I think I bit off more than we could chew with the games. Luckily dropping the OC kept us pretty close to the 6PM announced ending.

One pet peeve I had noticed all year was that by the time the finals were being run most of the teams had cleared out. It was my deliberate planning to have the awards ceremony at the end so we could have some folks there to cheer for the players. After all, getting recognition for something other than sports is a big part of FIRST.

Thanks to the Miracle Workerz for making the trip up and giving your all. Did you notice the colors on the Scorpion in the last seeding round?

Here's one for you- in my first edition (of 4) of the seeding rounds round 24 was teams 303 and 25 vs 365 and 84. It would have been quite a battle!! But after two more total redo's of the entire schedule as teams came and went the model ended with what we eventually played.

I hope all the teams had fun. I heard only one negative all day and I was able to correct it quickly.

WC

John Larock 25-11-2002 08:39

Eruption Thoughts (continued)

I accidently hit POST REPLY before sharing my full note, so here is the rest...

THE NOT-SO-GOOD

* Day too long

- announcer was taking too long to announce teams. Once the high school, sponsor, etc. was announced once, there was no need to repeat it. For some matches, we went through at least two repeats of the full name for each team.

* Playing Field Electrical

- I do not know the full extent of the problem, but there were several stoppages due to electrical. It may have been teams not knowing the proper procedure or the electrical / communications signals for the field itself. A number of matches had robots without power halfway through the match. I know during the wildcard rounds, Team #222 lost power with about 45 seconds remaining. This really isn't fair to teams.

* Match Schedule

- I know Team #84 got snowed in and could not attend. There was at least one other team who didn't make it. It may have been better to redo the schedule than to ask other teams to sub. I can go both ways on this. While it is nice to be able to play more matches, will teams really be putting their hearts into it if they do not get any point credit? Don't know. With some teams not attending, we could have reduced the number of Qualifying Matches and saved some time.

* Slow down / Speed Up

- With the day dragging on (Qualifying Matches were not completed until at least 1PM), the announcer was asking teams to "hurry up" if they had last minute set-up to do while their robots were in pre-match on the field. It's hard to take when, through no fault of anyone, we might be trying to make up for lost time due to electrical difficiulties.

* Organization / Queuing

- For some reason, some matches would be over and no teams would be queued up for the next match. This happened a number of times.

While these are not major issues, they all add up to adding lots of time to an already full schedule. With the placement of one or two volunteers in the pits to keep things moving, this could be easily improved.

THE THANKS

Through it all, Team #365 had a great time! Thanks to Team #224 for selecting us to share their alliance. Also, thanks to Team #651 for being a great partner.

To teams #25, #341, and #271. Great job! Your alliance played more matches than anyone and you did it all with style, grace, and power! You guys deserve to take home the ULTIMATE Tiki God Statue.

Team #87 - terrific job with your #1 Seeding. You guys had more QPs by far than anyone else. And if our comp team would have done a thing or two different in our match together (we didn't get into the endzone and were a mere two feet away at the end of the match), you would have had an even higher average.

Team #303 - The "It Ain't Easy Being Green" Award was very gracious and thoughtful. Thanks!

All the individual organizers - Wayne C., Paul K, Mike Wade & Pete (the FIRST FIELD ON TOUR guys) and everyone who helped. It doesn't happen without y'all.

Thanks for the chance to compete one last time with last year's bot. Looking forward to working with you all in 2003!!!

:D :D :D :D :D

hey does any one have pics of the guys from 222 in their wigs and grass skirts?
or one of their pineapple

George A. 25-11-2002 10:54

How about team 11? Twice they had their ball cage up ready to dump balls and the wire snapped!! (D'oh)

Anyway thanx to team's 25 and 303 for a great competition. Everything ran smoothly and I would definately do it again next year.

P.S.: Congrats to team 25 for finally accomplishing what so many of us hoped to do. Beat the living daylights out of MOE!!!

I have pictures of the floating goal, I will post it as soon as possible. I also will put up some other pics I took at the competition.

We had lots of fun and our new drivers got some great practice. We love our new speed trophy;)

you guys must not have been at duel on the delaware when the two team alliance of 25 and 87 spun MOE and won the competition. Diablo seems to do well in the qualifiying rounds but we didnt design it well enough to do good in the elimination rounds...

Wayne C. 25-11-2002 17:12

Hey guys-

I am very happy the Moe team attended. It took a lot of arm twisting (not meant as a PUN in any way- sorry). But imagine how they feel to always have the audience out to get their robot? I guess if you build a great machine it sets the bar higher and gives the teams a goal to work for. Beating a machine like the Moehawk is a landmark achievement, at least it was for us.
Team 365, a relative youngster in FIRST, should be proud to have had such a great rise as they have in the past few years. They really seem to have the ideals FIRST is looking for and they certainly deserve all the recognition they have received.

So rather than go after the green guys - since we won each of the four off-season comps we entered- does that mean we are next year's target? Hye, we are guilty as much as the rest of you but I hope my guys all recognize the difference between good natured rivalry as opposed to vengeance.

Consider this- we won awards with 11, 102, 303, 84, 87, 341, 271, 293 and several others this year and in the past. That means we have played with nearly half the field of BE as partners. I consider all these teams our friends. The same goes for the teams we have beaten. Team 303 has both beaten us royally and been beaten by us yet we consider them good friends. Dean and Woody had the right idea when they developed the Alliance format for FIRST.

So lets cut the Green Guys a break. I want to be on their good side when they build their next monster machine next year ; )

Pics

I looked at one of my pics of the flaoting goal and it looks really odd. IS anyone else having this problem? Is the image distorted? If so please reply and I can repost it.

It was great competeing with 25 again we go way back, we loved your crane bot. At rutgers 25, us, and Moe dominated in 2000. That was a great game, I hope some version of it returns.

Wayne C. 25-11-2002 23:05

Spikey-

I redid your shot and reposted it. With the reflective tape reflecting the flash it looks like the goal is leaving the ground and taking the robots with it. Very UFO like.

Scully and Mulder may want to look at this one.....

The Claw refuses to die

Well, coming into BE our robot spent the night outside in it's box with a tarp getting snowed on and then took a three hour trip through more snow before getting to do anything. The Claw was quite angry at us throughout the qualification rounds and really didn't work properly til the elminations where we really needed it to defeat a very powerful team 303, 41, and 752 (sorry 303 we really wanted to ally with you). The claw then moved onto the silver scorpion alliance where we took two goals away from 25 in the next one and a half matches before....well anyone there know what happened  but all in all we had alot of fun and we did keep our promise to 84.....Chuck was riding our conveyor throughout the entire day. We had alot of fun at Brunswick eruption and can't wait to see many of the teams in the coming year. And the claw still lives on working just as well as the first day we ever ran it!!! Thank you to our great team of engineers, machinists and student builders!!!!!

I don't want UR hair, I want one of those
if I could get one, I would, and then
probable walk around school wearing it w/ no explanation for the confused (I do that very often:D )
I would never dream of STEALING the hair! I love the word 'DIABLO' too much to do that! (my mouse's name for biology is Diabla <-- female, not to mention the car lambergine{sp?}..ooo)

dixonij 02-12-2002 14:16

Ooooohhhh Lamborgini(sp) Diablo... *me drools*... that and the McLaren F1 LM...

the hair by the way is the Heat Miser from that rudolph christmas special a few years back.

alucard171 03-12-2002 00:01

I am the hair

Yeah this is the hair here from DIABLO.... and there is no way i am going to give it up...it was fun though to see that little green MOE kid get beat up for grabbin my hair though..:D

Alex Forest 03-12-2002 09:11

hmm... well considering i wore it all around one of the competitions, i didnt think it was all that hard to get. i just asked. and whoever it was that had it let me. theres pictures up somewhere....

dixonij 03-12-2002 14:13

if you ask nicely you will probally get a chance to wear the hair. if you try to steal it the wrath of DIABLO will befall you.

alucard171 03-12-2002 14:22

The eruption was cool

The Hair

I thought that it was pretty cool there....i had a great time even though after team 87 got first seed we did not go anywhere after that.. but it is ok we still had the still got that 99 and 93 that set us as a major competitor...but anyway....i had a good time

Firewolf 03-12-2002 16:58

PLEASE!

Will you be at the RU for the regional?
Because I will ask very very very very very nicely, and do the whole wayne-&-garth thing of 'i am not worthy' for a chance to wear it, maybe just for a match.
And even though I won't have the 'O' shirt,
you know it'll go great with the Hawaiian shirt,
(or dress~pending)
please?

o yeah, btw, thanks for coming down and dancing when the music was on - YMCA.

Note:
I was kinda upset about all that because I had people threatening to take my left limbs if music wasn't played for them to dance to, and then the copy made wasn't working on the DJ's equipment, and no on was joining in.... it actually got me very sad - but o well, I'll have to get over it.

Thanks for using my pic of the floating goal! Next time I will be sure to post my pics in a viewable size.
I look forward to providing more photos for teams from all around New Jersey.

Uhhhhh.... where the heck IS the events page with all the pictures. I'm seeing the same site that's pretty choppy and everything and is so confusing, argh! :(

Re: Brunswick Eruption Results and Thanks

As a member of the only rookie team at the Brunswick Eruption, I'd like to thank Team 25 for hosting such a great competition. Everyone on Team 1546 had lots of fun and learned plenty. We were using a borrowed robot, and I don't think anyone expected us to do as well as we did. We were basically running a shovel on wheels with a useless arm. But making it into 13th place and winning the "Against All Odds" trophy was outstanding. Thanks again.

P.S.: Anyone who has extra photos of the BE, please post them.
