2017 FLL is a Water Game

Burn, FRC people, FLL beat you to the water game.

From the CVR website

Quote:

On your mark, get set, flow! Drink in the 2017 HYDRO DYNAMICS season and learn all about water – how we find, transport, use, or dispose of it. In the 2017 FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge, students age 9 to 14 from 80 countries will make a splash with HYDRO DYNAMICS. What might become possible when we understand what happens to our water?

FIRST LEGO League challenges kids to think like scientists and engineers. During the HYDRO DYNAMICS season, teams will choose and solve a real-world problem in the Project. They will also build, test, and program an autonomous robot using LEGO® MINDSTORMS® technology to solve a set of missions in the Robot Game. Throughout their experience, teams will operate under FIRST LEGO League’s signature set of Core Values, celebrating discovery, teamwork, and Gracious Professionalism®.
It is interesting to note that the 2017 FLL game (HYDRO DYNAMICS) and the 2017 FRC game ,(STEAMWORKS), have a common element (water), just like the they did in 2015 (Trash Trek/ Recycle Rush).

1993, 2009, and 2016 all had either water or a place for it on the field.

1993: inside some of the balls the robots needed to score
2009: Sprayed on some field carpet occasionally to reduce static
2016: The Moat. 'Nuff said.

FRC Recycle Rush was released in January 2015. FLL Trash Trek was released in August 2015. FLL World Class was released in August 2014. At the 2015 World Championship (April), Recycle Rush was played along with World Class so they sort of missed. Even though they happened in the same calendar year, they did not happen in the same school year.

2014-2015 School year = World Class; Recycle Rush
2015-2016 School year = Trash Trek; Stronghold
2016-2017 School year = Animal Allies; Steamworks
2017-2018 School year = Hydro Dynamics; ??

2009 was the only year when FRC robots interacted directly with water that was placed by the field reset crew, and everybody hated the 2009 game. I'm surprised everyone isn't dreading another water game. They have historically been terribly received.

I really find it odd that despite FLL and FRC seasons overlap (and FTC and FLL Jr.), they use different naming schemes. Why not call everything by the year it competed at FIRST Championship? Or better yet, call it 2016-2017 style schemes like most schools call it.

I think calling it by the school year (i.e. 2016-2017) would be more straightforward but from a titling perspective, saying:

"Welcome to the 2016 game, FIRST Stronghold" or "Welcome to the 2016 FLL Game, Animal Allies"

sounds a lot better than

"Welcome to the 2016-2017 game, FIRST Stronghold" or "Welcome to the 2016-17 FLL game, Animal Allies"

I don't think you need to do it for FRC. All of the FRC season, from kickoff to Einstein is all within one calendar year. Calling it 2016 FIRST Stronghold is fine, but I think that the other FIRST programs should align with FRC then.

I see what you are saying but I do not think that it fixes much from a clarity perspective to only apply it to one program. It could possibly help a little but probably not even worth it.

now we just need a game that involves shooting golf balls into ponds, which have mechanisms powered by steam to recycle the balls back to the field.

WATER and GOLF BALLS confirmed for 2017 FIRST steamworks!. you heard it here first folks
