Encoders for Drive Train
Hi Everyone!
We are hoping to put encoders on our drive train this year. We expect to again use the Toughbox Mini Gear Boxes on our drive train (http://www.andymark.com/product-p/am-0654.htm). We are having trouble determining which encoders to buy. We have limited tools and machining ability so we want to purchase something we know we can install successfully but will provide accurate and precise readings. We had hoped to use a CTR encoder, but those seem to be out of our league in terms of installation. We liked the E4T OEM Miniature Optical Encoders from AndyMark (http://www.andymark.com/E4T-OEM-Mini...-p/am-3132.htm) but even after reading the installation instructions, we still weren't quite sure if installing this encoder would require machining capabilities. We also thought about purchasing some CIMCoders (http://www.andymark.com/encoder-p/am-3314.htm) but weren't sure if those would work with the Toughbox. Which encoder do you recommend we purchase? Thanks for the help! Greta |
Re: Encoders for Drive Train
Have you checked out the other thread for drivetrain encoders?

Re: Encoders for Drive Train
The E4Ts do not require any machining. IIRC from our installations, you just need a screwdriver and steady hands. The hardest part is making the press fit of the hub disk (step 4), but its definitely doable by hand. It is easiest to do the install before you start filling up the inside of the chassis with electronics and such. (Also, rotate the chassis/gearbox so the output shaft is down and the encoder shaft is up.)
Edit: However, I do suggest this installation take place AFTER breaking in the gearbox dry and then greasing the gearbox! |
Re: Encoders for Drive Train
i agree with GeeTwo. Go with the E4T encoders. Easy install, The toughboxes actually have predrilled holes that seem to be made for the E4T.
They also seem to be pretty accurate and robust enough for our applications. |
