Festival of Champions and Encrypted Game Manual
Written by Frank Merrick.

Festival of Champions

By now, many of you have probably seen the announcement by FIRST Senior Management about the Festival of Champions to take place in New Hampshire on July 28th and 29th, 2017. We’re very excited to be hosting the Chairman’s Award winning team and the teams on the Winning Alliance from each FIRST Championship location for a two-day celebration. We’ve got several activities for the teams planned, including a special dinner with Dean at his home (so cool!), along with a competition between the winning alliances, to be webcast to the world. See the link above for more info. We still have many details to finalize, including all those pesky rules that will need to go along with this, but we wanted to pass along this news as soon as we could!

Encrypted FIRST® STEAMWORKS™ Documents

You want your encrypted game manual? You got your encrypted game manual. Download it now here. The paint may still be a little wet, so be careful.

For folks new to this, here’s the deal: Download the encrypted manual now to your iPhone/Android/PalmPilot/whatever (pdf apps like Foxit PDF or Adobe Acrobat are helpful). At the end of the Kickoff broadcast, we’ll reveal the code that will unlock the file so you can immediately start devouring all that FIRST STEAMWORKS goodness.

The Kit of Parts checklists, which will let you inventory your Kit of Parts, have also been encrypted and posted. You can find them here.

We’re still working on finalizing the drawing package that goes with the game. That likely won’t be ready for download before Friday, but we’ll let you know. It, too, will be encrypted.

All files encrypted prior to Kickoff use the same password, again to be revealed at the end of the Kickoff broadcast.

More news soon!

Frank

As a member of a team who is hosting a kickoff I am patiently waiting till post kickoff to vent about something related to this.

2017 - 126 pages
2016 - 111 pages
2015 - 65 pages

Just to point out, it's not a 1:1 comparison... Supposedly some parts of the former (/mourn) admin manual are now in the game manual.

Here's a direct link to the 2017 FRC Game and Season Manual (Encrypted): https://firstfrc.blob.core.windows.n...asonManual.pdf

Here's where to find the encrypted KoP checklist: http://www.firstinspires.org/resourc...7-kit-of-parts

With a direct link to them here: https://firstfrc.blob.core.windows.n..._encrypted.zip

And here's the page where all 2017 FRC Game and Season Materials will be posted: http://www.firstinspires.org/resourc...nual-qa-system

Where did you get your numbers? I just downloaded the old manuals from http://www.firstinspires.org/resourc...-documentation and I get:

2016 - 114 (game) + 126 (admin) = 240 pages
2015 - 65 (game) + 59 (admin) = 124 pages
2014 - 111 (combined)
2013 - 94 (game) + 67 (admin) = 161 pages
2012 - 91 (game) + 73 (admin) = 164 pages

Why not encrypt your rant and post it now, then release the password during kickoff?

How are people downloading these files to their computer? I click the link but can't download it?

I deleted my posts. I thought that what I had posted were the page numbers of what the page counts were in the encrypted manuals.

I seem to have been causing more confusion than good, so the posts have been removed. Sorry for the trouble.

I did. No matter what I save it as it gives me an error when I try to open it in adobe. The error says there was a problem reading the document.

Is it the same for the KOP zip file?
Try a different computer.

I get the password popup for both.

KOP zip works fine and asks for the password when I open it.

pdf file size here is ~9.96MB in case it's a file transfer problem.

I still haven't seen the firmware for the OM5P-AC radio yet. Will that be part of the technical documents released after Kickoff or will we need to search elsewhere?

My guess is the radio update utility will be installed with the 2017 Update Suite. Might be posted here:http://search.ni.com/nisearch/app/ma...nav:pdl/q/FRC/

From this guide http://wpilib.screenstepslive.com/s/...o-for-home-use, the utility is available here https://usfirst.collab.net/sf/frs/do...ration_utility.

What Browser are you using? With Firefox, select Save Link As... I would have thought that that saved the link itself, but it downloaded 10.2 MB of data.

Firefox and Linux both describe the file as 10.2MB. However, if you do file browser on it, the number of bytes should line up perfectly.

My file is described as "10.4 MB (10,444,146 bytes)".

Has any iPhone user been able to save this to their iBooks app on their phone? I can save it in dropbox but I'd prefer to have it in iBooks. When I click on "view in iBooks" in the safari browser, nothing happens. Thanks.

I am getting this problem too. I might try some workarounds later. I'll keep you posted if anything works.

I literally just had to figure this out with one of our students last night.

Long story short, no solution could be found to save it from Safari. If you go to the link in the Chrome app, you can save it to iBooks from there.

Thanks for the tip. Just wasted 30 minutes trying to save to iBooks from Safari. Installed Chrome and it was done in seconds. I also saved a local copy with Adobe reader too, just in case. Wish the world could run on Android.

Glad to be of help. I tested with other documents and have submitted a radar request to Apple through their Beta channel. I remember being able to save the document from Safari last year, so something changed with Safari.

I downloaded it on my computer, emailed it to myself, and then opened it from the email on the iPad. Was rather disappointed that Safari wasn't working.

Opening it in Chrome sounds like a much simpler solution.
