G17 and G11 : 5 seconds total or 5 seconds at a time?

Code:

G17. Opponent’s KEY: a no parking zone. A ROBOT may not be in their opponent’s KEY for more
than five (5) seconds (if the ROBOT is breaking the plane of the line with BUMPERS, it is
considered in the KEY).
Violation: FOUL. For every five (5) seconds in which the situation is not corrected, FOUL

Pinning rules (G11) has similar verbiage.

Does this mean a robot can sit in the opponent's KEY for 4 seconds, completely exit it, and sit back in for 4 more seconds? Based on the rules, this would not be legal since the robot would be in the opponent's KEY for 8 seconds. But, based on previous games, the counter re-sets after exiting the zone or completing the pin.

Re: G17 and G11 : 5 seconds total or 5 seconds at a time?

G11 stipulates a 6 foot separation (in less than 5 secs) and 3 second wait for pinning again

G17 May not be in key for more than five seconds, bumper breaking key

However, going further A single ROBOT blocking access to a particular area of the FIELD is not a violation of G10.

G10 Don't collude with partners to shut down major parts of gameplay.

I think from these items are fairly explicit (for now) for single robot action. Key is not as protected as "Retrieval zone" where G13 comes into play. No touchy in retrieval zone.

I don't know what the ruling will be, but I sure hope that it means no more than 5 seconds at any given time. Because else it would be a nightmare for the ref to contemplate. She'd have to keep a running total of seconds in the KEY for each ROBOT.

I am interpreting it the same way as you, I red robot am in the blue key for 4 seconds, I leave the key for .01 seconds (enough that the ref clearly breaks the count) I can reenter the key immediately for 4 more seconds.

My interpretation as well. GCD may clarify after a few Q&A's. I'm am guessing that the KEY will remain a no parking zone, but hit & run driving is still OK. Wait and see...

IMHO they are using the term "key" from Basketball. 5 seconds at a time. Leave, and you get another 5 second period.
