Keep in mind the gear lift will not "grab" the robot. :] The robot cannot grab the gear lift by rule since it is part of the field. I see nothing in the rules that would prevent the robot from having the gear lift protrusion from extending into robot frame perimeter even with incidental contact with the robot. Which I think is the answer to your question?
