FIRST FRC Q&A

Ok not sure if I am the only one with this problem or if it is due to the Q&A not being open yet but I created a login for the Question and Answer but whenever I try to jump to the other screens it says I am not authorized and need a verification number for the team. Where would I find that number or am I missing something? Thanks!

Also note that while you can set up and get authorized, Q&A is not actually accepting questions at this time. :(

Anybody else not able to "sort" the questions?

I also don't like that the "Hot questions" page isn't numerical... But that might just be because I can't sort...

EDIT: Nevermind there is a link at the top that says "search the Q&A" which opens the sorting drop down menu

Re: FIRST FRC Q&A

I am annoyed that when I star a question that question jumps around on the page.

Edit: I am generally annoyed with the live updating of the Search Q&A page. I do not want the text I am reading to jump because a new question was asked and is now added to the page I am looking at.

Any way to get a simple list of all answered questions?
We can only sort on "Newest Answers", does that mean they will start disappearing never to be seen again?
I don't really care about the Questions as much as I do about the Answers.

Annoyed that you have to click on an answered question to read the answer and it takes you to a different page. How about a drop down box.

I do like the speed of answers though. That is much improved from the past.

So, I just got an email that a question I asked had been answered. That is quite impossible seeing as I did not ask a question, I do not even have the ability to ask questions.

I appreciate all the work the creators put into this system, I hope you understand that the annoyances I am posting are to help you improve upon the system.

Answer highlights based on my recollection:

1. Pilots can use the lift to remove gears from the robot during auto.
2. The robot can use the removal of the gear as a control input. That is not indirect interaction under A02.
3. Ropes do not need to be removed from robots when robots are removed from the field.
4. The overflow refill station gear slot is there just so all the chutes are the same, not because GDC expects gears to be introduced there. There's an open question regarding if that is allowed in the event a gear is misplaced by a team in the loading lane.

Improvements:

1) In search, show the answer so I don't have to click on the question.

2) If not #1, allow me to right click and open the question in a new window so I don't loose my search results (when I hit the back button, I have to do the search again). Right now, if I open the question in a new window, I get an error.

3) Add a time period (# of days) for the "most recent answers". that way I can look for answers since the last time I checked.

Hi Rich,

Creator of the new Q&A system here. Can you elaborate on #2. When I right click on the question and choose open in new tab it seems to work fine. We were having some trouble with our load balancer earlier today which might have been the problem.

Re: FIRST FRC Q&A

To be honest, this system is very hard to use. If I want to read through the questions and answers, I have to sort by newest, then click on each question individually to see the answers. Because of all of this hassle, I have resorted to using the star to mark answered questions that I have read. In previous years, it has been possible to download a pdf of all of the answered questions. Is this a planned feature?

Allowing the user to read the answers to multiple questions on the same page, adding a system to mark read questions, and allowing for a download of a pdf of the questions would vastly improve this system.

I had this problem earlier too. I just tried it using one of the questions on the front page, the question opened in a new tab but went into an infinite refresh loop for some reason. Chrome 55.0.2883.87 m on Windows 7.

Blake

Works now. I tried it in IE, FF, and Chrome on Windows 7.

Revised Suggestion: In lieu of Time Period for Newest Answers, how about displaying Time of Answer instead of Time of Question (Asked xx hours ago).

The Question Number is similar enough to Time of Question. I can look at the Time of the Answer to figure out when I get to the point in the list that I have already read.

Thanks.

workaround:
https://frc-qa.firstinspires.org/qa/<qnn>

where "<qnn>" is the question number. so for Question 11:
https://frc-qa.firstinspires.org/qa/11

You can also click on any question. In the URL, change the ending to the question number you want.

There should be a field where you can put in a question number, and the system does it for you.

Re: FIRST FRC Q&A

I'm surprised the system doesn't have the ability to dump all answered questions to a file. That seems like an important feature for teams and inspectors at events. I'd really rather not have to click on and print 300 answers to have them available for reference for myself and my inspectors.

I tried several tines to go to the search page (https://frc-qa.firstinspires.org/search), I am getting put in a refresh loop. I also tried looking at individual pages and the same thing occurred. I then logged out and logged in, and it appeared to be working.

Re: FIRST FRC Q&A

The sort function does not reset the page. Meaning if you are viewing page 3 of newest answers and then switch the sort to newest questions, you will see page 3 of newest questions.

Re: FIRST FRC Q&A

As it stands, the QA system is unusable. Trying to read all the answers starting from question 1. This is the sequence of clicks I need to go through:
1) Scroll to bottom of page.
2) Click the 10 box.
3) Scroll to bottom of page.
4) Click the 11 box.
5) Scroll to bottom of page.
6) Click the #1 question.
7) Read the answer.
8) Hit the back button. Which takes me back to question 114 (at this time).
9) Goto step 1. Repeat 114 times.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

And not to just be a complainer, please accept these suggestions for improvement.
- Don't require a click to a separate webpage to view the answer to a question. Just print it under the question, so we can quickly scroll through the list. I see that clicking on the question takes you to a webpage with stats about the question. I don't care about the stats. I just want to see the answer.
- Make clicking on the question take you to the webpage with the question stats, or even keep the answer there. Just put the answer under the question without making me click to a separate page.
- When I hit the back button, take me back to the page I came from, not the top of the list.
- Fix the sort drop down menu at the top of the page. When I hover over it, I get a "don't do that" icon.

Seriously, I and the other mentors on my team have given up trying to read the answers. I just don't have the hours it would take to use this system.

I understand your frustrations. We are working on a fix that will help with the readability of the answers.

For now the best way is to see just the answered questions on this page:

As others have pointed out a right click and open in new tab will allow you to keep your place.

Sorry this is so frustrating for you.

As a heads up, none of the sorting methods in the drop down box on the page you've linked actually sort the results.

DaveL 13-01-2017 03:04

Re: FIRST FRC Q&A

Before I looked here, I checked out the Q&A site.
I had the same reaction as many of the people that posted.

Yes, having the answer right below the question is key.
Not having a way to return to from the answer is important until the answer is posted under the question. If you can combine Q with A, the return problem is eliminated.

When a file (pdf maybe) of the Q & A's are available, I would like it organized by time (first question, then 2nd question...
As an enhancement, use the viewers search settings to organize the output.

I'm using FireFox 50.1 with win 7 and was able to open the answers in a new tab.

I was able to sort by oldest. That gave me the results in the order that they were submitted. It was easy to see the progress of the answer team by doing it this way as most of the early questions were answered and down the line they are mostly unanswered.

I also like the fact that each Q and A has a unique url. That way I can share it with my team by simply copying and pasting the url into an email.

There was a statement in the intro about how the new system would be integrated into the manual. Can anyone explain how that works? I was hoping that there would be a link from the answer to the associated paragraph in the manual. Does this function exist or is it going to be part of a future upgrade?

To answer your question, on a question/answer page (https://frc-qa.firstinspires.org/qa/22) under the questions stats there is a link to the manual section as defined by the GDC.

Further any question that FIRST Staff post that has a rule in ie: I04 that blue icon in the text is a link to that rule in the manual.

All I want from the Q&A system is a way to get a simple file (PDF would be awesome) of all the questions with their answers (if answered), so that I can just "read" the Q&A to see what questions have been asked, along with their answers (if answered yet).

The old system used to do the above, and was basically the only way I ever used the old system, other than to ask a question. Attached is an example of one of the PDF files from the old system.

It seems like the request for a "read all the Q&A questions and answers without any additional clicking" is the most common one in this thread, by far:

The big danger here is that the GDC has changed answers (retroactively) in the past. These are typically also discussed in Team Updates, but getting folks in the habit of checking CD for official Q&A can end up really problematic.

Are you still seeing the reload loops now?

I am at least. Just tried again, it's 1) white page, 2) blue Q&A header with no login/register and no questions but with that gray connecting box in the corner, 3) gray box goes away 4) login/register appears below on blue header 5) header changes to black, 6) questions load, 1) back to white page. It's going very fast, so it's hard to read the black header, but its tabs are on a different format than the blue one here and on the home page.

Hitting stop doesn't work for me (on chrome android), but I get that this may just be a mobile disadvantage.

Solution to an easy way to read Q&A..

Get a news reader like TheOldReader (free download)
Subscribe to this feed: http://static.patfairbank.com/frcqa.rss

And you can read Q&A like this...

I know this is slightly off topic, but is it a download or is it a webservice?

Thanks! Much better.

Can you add an option to sort the questions in numerical order as well as in the order they were answered?

I'm really impressed by how quick the changes to the Q&A system were implemented. When's the last time a problem went from complaints on CD to a solution in just a day or two?

Agreed. Not having to click on individual questions to see their answers anymore is awesome.

However, I don't seem to be able to sort through the answers anymore. When I click the "More" button on the bottom of this page under "New Answers", I just get a "Not Found" error. Previously I was able to sort through answers there. There is this page that just provides answers sorted by newest first, but you can't change the sorting.

Seconded. The new page fixes the problem almost entirely. Cudos!

And it appears to be stable now. Thank you to whoever at HQ got rid of that "black header" reload loop; this is very nice now.

OK, all you people complementing the improvements have apparently jinxed the system and caused it to crash. No good deed goes unpunished.

This q&a system is getting to be ridiculous. Some of the questions asked are critical to robot design for teams. FIRST should be capable of handling the FRC question capacity by this time in its life.

It's clearly Einstein 2012 all over again! ;)

In all seriousness though, this type of stuff seems to be happening more and more. It doesn't look good for FIRST, it doesn't help teams (esp. in such a theoretically difficult game). Good luck Q&A Team and all other FIRST employees, you seem to need it.

Re: FIRST FRC Q&A

This is what happens when you rewrite everything in your online support system all in the same year: website, event registration, Q&A system. Each of those pieces worked well until it was replaced. They could have cleared up one or two of the lingering questions in today's team update, but they left it even more vague.

Thanks! This is nice! Well done!

However, is it possible to get *all* of the answered questions on one page (yes, I know it will be long) for easy archival off-line (like to take to a tournament)?

Hey Ken,

Did you see we added an RSS feed? You can use any of the great free RSS readers to consume the feed and print the questions and answers.

Re: FIRST FRC Q&A

Since I've gotten a couple of requests to re-share the google doc that I took down, I just want to clarify:

1. I took it down since I'll no longer be updating it either with new or modified responses, and I didn't want to be sharing outdated information

2. I created a spreadsheet that should update automatically (uses the RSS feed so I don't have to copy it over by hand): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...xaQ/edit#gid=0

3. That spreadsheet has questions listed both by the order they were answered in and by question number. Missing questions are those that aren't answered yet.

4. Hopefully this spreadsheet is useful and is a decent replacement for the document. If you have suggestions on what would make it more useful let me know.

I know this is going to get buried, but I did want to express some things....

First, I want to thank Blake for developing this. Like most any major forklift IT operation, it wasn't perfect at first, it had some issues, but through iteration and hard work, it has improved greatly.

Secondly, and far more importantly, thank you for interacting with the "users" of the system here, being open, listening to feedback, and, I really can't stress this enough: being responsive to our needs and concerns.

Since it launched there's been several significant upgrades to the system, at a pace that eclipses what FIRST has been able to with, say, STIMS, for example. There's still some things to work on, but I feel far better knowing they are being worked on, and we can see tangible progress.

I hope that FIRST can take this model, learn from it, and that we can see more like this from FIRST directly in the future.

Again, thank you.

Re: FIRST FRC Q&A

I'd like to add a sort request.

As a self-test for how well I know the rules, I like to try to predict the answers to UN-answered questions. Can a "unanswered-only" sort be put in?

And I second any previous calls for being able to put everything into one printable document.

Other than that, the site has grown on me--I particularly like the "most recent answers" sort so I can see what's brand new, and the quick linking to other questions. Can't wait to see how it does in future years!

Re: FIRST FRC Q&A

Gah! another example of a team asking the inverse of a question in the body of the question: Q&A 297

In this case, the answer to the question in the title is Yes (Per R77), and the answer to the question in the body text is No (Per R77). GDC answered Yes, but the Yes doesn't apply to the question body.

Can someone with a Q&A password submit a followup to correct this? it's unclear.
