Hopper-Middle DEFENDER/Fuel floor Bot?

I see an opportunity for success here..... This bot could with great VISION and DRIVETRAIN try to own the middle of the field (where team will need to operate mostly blind) .... three hoppers. Possibly as the defend floor pickup and Fuel truck dumps . Place gear in backside auto/climb end...

EDIT: I was unaware guess pegs are on other side (I was thinking davits and pegs below them) ...still good transition defense and majority hopper defense

Thoughts?

They could pretty easily defend all four middle facing pegs

Can you please elaborate on this idea? If you mean the gear lifts, there is none facing towards the middle

Sure, it's a great way to ensure you make it to the Elims! Except for Championship events, the 3rd robot on an alliance frequently plays a defensive role. And, many times robots are relegated to defense because their offensive value is weak. I suspect you'd be a top defensive choice if you could also climb a rope.

The only disadvantage to building defensive robots, in my opinion, is you usually end up getting selected by seeds 6-8. Reason being seeds 6-8 will generally try to choose the best scorer available along with the best defender available to neutralize seeds 1-3.

Of course all that goes out the window if you seed in the top 5 ;), but that's usually tough to do when your primary function is not scoring.

If a defensive robot is good enough to seed in the top 10, I would guess that it would be one of the first picks.

Really mess up the transition for Gear transport and majority of Hopper defense. Could also slow the climb transition because those back two will be needed to climb. Being in Neutral zone you can do almost anything to bots and they will likely be at a severe disadvantage due to other design aspects for their scoring cycles. Just work the middle and own it. Like an NFL linebacker. Remember preventing a score is just as good as scoring.... cycle time increases is deadly with so much to do.

from the manual
3.5 Lifts
LIFTS are used to transfer GEARS from the ROBOTS to the PILOTS. One (1) LIFT is mounted to each of the three (3) sides of the deck that face the PLAYER STATIONS.

so there are NO lifts facing the middle of the field.

The pegs are at 120 degree offset so the back 2 are facing the middle pretty much at least a VERY short distance to defend both..plus really mess up the transition for Gear transport and Hopper defense. Could also slow the climb transition becuse those back two will be needed to climb.

the 3 lifts are facing the alliance wall, the DAVITS where you climb the ropes are at a 120 degrees offset
Edit : Bruceb beat me to it

RIP Boltman.

There are merits to a lot of interesting defensive strategies. Defending teams trying to load from hoppers or from the floor or just passing through. Keeping teams from getting to their preferred scoring pegs, etc
