I wonder if the specific plastic composition of individual balls can vary. I doubt they have exacting standards for something that's "just a toy" (to quote the Woody spelled with a Y). Depending on how much recycled material they use and the kinds of plastic being recycled, some balls may be more brittle than others.

We had a few with similar cracks developing fresh out of the bag in the KOP.
