my favorite team and robot name? #16- the baxter bomb squad and their robot the two minute warning. even though we did have to alter our shirts to wear them in public, the name still rocks. i'm also a big fan of wildstang! see you @ nationals!

Thank you very much for your feedback to my survey question above.

Basically no one said anything, but that in itself was a statement, especially since there were a number of communications regarding other team's names. Therefore I was able to deduce that the good people who frequent this forum were not enamored with our (now) old team name.

Hopefully our new name will be an improvement.

I like:
312 Heatwave
Coqui power ( i dont know if they are still around)
180 SPAM
As far as robot names sidroc was pretty kool from team 168 the Flashbacks
and of course i have to talk about my team 212 RACE (Robotics And Creative Engineering...Funny thing about that, we didnt know about RAGE meaning somthing at the time we made RACE then at nationals we saw them and were like....umm ok. ) And our robot was RACER (Robotics And Creative Engineerings Robot)

It's funny to me that several people mentioned they like the name SPAM - just about every year we have debated about changing the name to something more "competitive robotic" sounding like Demolition Squad or WildStang. We didn't discuss it this year - I guess it kind of grows on you. Like a fungus.

If FIRST goes fully international, I'd love to see a team called "Youth in Asia", my all time favorite double meaning.

While funny, I don't think that would go over well.

Well, I waited two days and Isabelle never responded. So here goes.

S.P.A.M. stands for:

S outh Fork High School
P ratt & Whitney
A nd
M artin County High School

The name was thought up by the students during one of the first meetings in 1998. Or was it '97?

It does kind of stick with you after a while.

I have to say that SPAM is definitely a name that grows on you, as are Cheesy Poofs, ComBBat, and Moe. Honestly, i think if i were team 180 i would have done a play off the team number, but it's too late for that now. Countless roboticist souls would go into eternal mourning were SPAM to change their name.

oh warren... i was at that fated evening 5 years ago... has it been *that* long!?

we were all sitting in the south fork library and one of the first things on the agenda was to pick a team name. of course there were the usual variations on the theme of combining school mascots (this eventually became our very first team logo, though i like the "SuperSPAM" logo much better). Ti-Dogs was offered up as a cross between the Tigers and the Bulldogs. i offered Bull-gers (say it out loud a few times... i promise, it's funny) some folks mentioned names based on 180 being a half circle, but when it came to voting, those lost votes for pure predictability. someone suggested an acronym of the 2 high schools like SAM. then one of the folks in the back of the room called out "What about Pratt? they're in this, too!"

then someone called out "OK, then. How 'bout SPAM?"

you ever get one of those moments when everyone in a room catches on at the same time? well, that's what this was like... all the lightbulbs popped at the same time. the vote was nearly unanimous. and SPAM was born!

*sigh* on a total side note, i'd like to thank 180 for 5 awesome years (and what a way to spend the last one, eh?). it was truely one of the best chapters of my life so far, and i wish you guys continued success not only for this year, but for many years to come!

i'd also like to thank team 1083 for welcoming me this year! let's rock that UCF regional!! right guys!?

I like the sound of that, especially the "unanimous" part. We just went through the same process but the (now) 4 schools on our team just didn't seem to provide a good acronym. We tried.

However, this thread was helpful and inspirational. Who knows, we may have to have another go at it next year, but for this year, Team 980 (formerly The Azgardians (those who live in Asgard, home of Norse gods and slain heroes) is now to be known as "the Thunderbots". (I guess the Norse gods have been throwing around Thunderbolts.)

Anyway, thank you for your reply's to this thread. When I hear some of these names, I will enjoy them even more now.

Personally, I am still envious of names like "Heat Wave", R.A.G.E. and "Wildstang". But "Thunderbots" will do.

For those in the south west, see you at the regionals, and for all the other teams, hope to see you at the Championships again this year (if we qualify).

a number of my favorites have already been mentioned, but the list wouldn't be complete without adding 668 - "The Apes of Wrath" from Pioneer High School in San Jose.

I'm also a fan of those simple yet catchy names which teams have been able to market/brand to the point where everyone knows them (quality robots each year helps also) such as Gila Monsters, GRT, and the BeachBots.

Jeff Rodriguez 17-12-2002 12:48

190 - Gompei
66 - The penguins

of course i have to say RAGE, but the acronym(sp?) is stupid.

Warren Boudreau 17-12-2002 16:30

My favorite Team Name for originaliyt and practicality is Team #519-Robomasters. Team #515-TechnoKnights is also a nice original name. Of course, I may be a bit biased though...

The overall coolest team name is #217 (I Believe) The ThunderChickens.

Anybody ever attend a Ford Sweet Repeat?

Bill Moore 18-12-2002 21:35

A couple of posts listed MOE as a good name, but MOE like many other names is an acronym. MOE comes from "Miracle of Engineering". This is a play on words from DuPont's corporate slogan "Miracles of Science". The team is called the Miracle Workerz.
