FIRST Deconstructed: Gracious Professionalism [Video Essay & Discussion]

Hello CD,
I'm sure we all have a sense as to what the term Gracious Professionalism encompasses, but, because it plays such an integral part in FIRST, I decided to research its history and meaning and share my findings in this video essay. I think to talk about Gracious Professionalism is to engage in a sort of community building discussion and it seems to really strengthen not only the understanding but the action of it, as well. It reminds us that everyone within FIRST is important – a person – and this is something we ought not to overlook.
Formal writing aside, this was really fun to make. All the sources I used to gather information and form the narrative of the video can be found in the video description. I encourage you to look through them yourself and see what you find. I doubtlessly missed some aspects of GP's past, so feel free to add information in this thread.
Finally, I'd be lying if I said I didn't want feedback. This video took more time than usual to create in order to make it especially professional and I (perhaps subjectively) think it shows. If you like the concept of videos essays exploring different aspects of FIRST, I'm more than open to researching and producing more videos similar to this one – I'm sure other content creators within FIRST are, too.
Thanks for reading, watching, contributing to the discussion, and whatnot. Cheers.

I really enjoyed watching this. I think to have discussions like these is one of the keys to extending beyond FIRST as simply a robotics program, and it's interesting to see how people interpret GP differently. I'm curious how you would personally define Gracious Professionalism.

This might sound strange, and I can't quite put my finger on why, but it seems like you almost don't have the right voice for the slower pacing in your speech. Maybe it's just me .

I'd probably define GP as good willed sportsmanship and behavior in a competitive or otherwise demanding environment, in all interactions, whether on or off the field. Sportsmanship is the closest synonym that comes to mind.

I can't speak as to why it may sound funny, but I will acknowledge my speaking is a bit more slow than necessary. When in the process of enunciating, I thought I might be adding too much inflection, but either that was all in my head or the mic just didn't pick it up. Either way, I'll opt for a less meandering narration next time.

I really like the video essay format, and though some of the visuals seemed a little "FIRST stock footage"-esk, the video really kept my attention. Great video!

GP has always seemed a little "hand wavy", but it has real importance, and deserves a deeper understanding. This would be a good video for anyone new to FIRST to watch.

P.S. Any Nerdwriter influence?

I would chalk up the "FIRST stock footage" feel to it being exactly that – I didn't have the necessary time to memorize the script and appear on camera, and I needed a lot of footage for video analyzing a concept that is hard to portray on film. Thus, a lot of stock footage was used, maybe to a fault. Thanks for the encouraging words, regardless. :)

And yeah, Nerdwriter probably did have an influence on this, although I would credit that whole genre of YouTubers doing videos like this to helping the original idea.
