What do you all drive?

heh, i searched for 'car' to see if someone already had one, but under 4 characters=bad, and 'cars' came up with a pictures thread and an RC thread, both old, so i figgered (and spelt) that it'd be ok for me to post this.

Anyway, what car do you drive, what are its traits, quirks, etc.

Ill start.

1991 Mercury Sable. Black. grey carpet interior. Beutiful car . . . . .i love Sables.

it kinda sucks and kinda is breaking down, but I love it, and heres why: it got character. I mean, how many other car's have a tachometer that points down, into the black space that exists in the OTHER arc designated by 0 and 8000 rpms? and it moves around randomly: bonus cool points.

Tail lights don't match, ones all chromed up, and the other is from a Sable 'light' we found at a junkyard, cuz some old lady took out our good one.

it is actually decently fast, and its BIG . . . . mind you, its no grand marquis, but it is big.

Ideal car: 70's Caddy with big fins on the back, all black. Cars don't get better (or bigger) than that . . . . .ahhh, the glory days of fins on cars . . . . .. where have they gone?

1985 Plymouth Reliant.

Drivers side door is busted inwards a bit, someone hit me about 2 weeks after getting the car.
Front Right turn signal cover busted (hit in a parking lot)
Very loud, high idle occasionally. About 86k miles on it, got it with 77,777 =)

DanLevin247 11-12-2002 15:37

Not mine, but a 2001 Ford Escape XLT. It's actually my parents car, but I use it all the time, and I enjoy calling it mine.

Yeah thats for sure, a "Vette"

Ricky, does the car accelerate now when you press down the accelerator, or does the 38HP engine die out? :p

Anyway

I mainly drive what I like to call "The Crapmobile" - 1990 Pontiac Sunbird, with a "road scar" from when the anti-lock brakes locked up. The car I drove today, well minivan- 1990 Pontiac Transport. On good days, my dad lets me drive his 2000 Honda Odyssey. Many days I am known as "Minivan <echo> man man man man <echo>"

I think I've answered this question before, and I am still driving my boring Saturn SL2, but now I also drive our company mini-van which we've dubbed Sweet Pickles, and sometimes one of the big old Ford trucks from our maintenance department (and I can barely see over the steering wheel in that one) so if you're ever in my area, and you think I might be driving, avoid the sidewalks!

TAURUS PRIDE

1993 white ford taurus.. inherited it from my great aunt with 45000 miles, it now has almost 55000. it's been in about 20 accidents(hey, my great aunt was an awful driver).. none since i got the car. you'd be surprised how fast tauruses go..

Races:
Hatchback Honda Civic - Smoked him

Newer(1998ish?) Honda Civic - Smoked him again

2003 VW Passat - Lost by an inch, but i had an extra 400 lbs in the car.. stupid little brother and his friend and their backpacks..

I also use my mom's car, a 1997 Ford Crown Victoria -- Kickin fast car, i must say.. havent raced in that yet.. i was supposed to race a kid in his stang but he chickened out cuz he knew i'd win..(fool has a v6 stang..) and im racing a kid in a porche 944 in a couple weeks.. ill be using my fave car, my 1993 white grocery getter taurus ;)

Frank(Aflak) 14-12-2002 16:23

Heh, GO SABLE/TAURUS!! (they are the same, but my sable is black and has lights where your grill is)

Heh, a friend of mine got a '98 Crown Vic Police Interceptor at an auction . . . . . . I am so jealous. Its got the whole 'interceptor' package, which means nice beefed up V-8 complete with cop tires, bigass steel bumber thingy on the front . . .. . ..

and the funny thing is that the rear doors don't open from the inside. Its such a nice car . . . . . .. . .

what i REALLY want is one of those new Mercury Marauders. Cop everything, Grand Marquis sized, but its got a nice pseudo-lux interior and sound system. And it only comes in black with black leather interior . . .and its grill is matte black vertical peices of metal. Its really mean looking, i want it.

course, old school would be nice, also, I'd take the '74 dodge police car from the Blues Brothers.

Dave_222 14-12-2002 16:58

I drive a 93 buick entry (it is actually a sentry but i say entry cuz the s is missing on the car) It is poop brown and the passenger side door handle doesnt work but hey it has a V8.

SteveM38 22-12-2002 16:56

i drive a 1971 Chevy Camper special C-10. Its my baby, all my time and money goes into it. it has a 350 in it with a turbohydromatice 350 automatic tranny it. it has 3.08 posi grears in the rear. i have built the engine up a little bit by putting in a cam, header, new carb, i ported the heads, bored out the cylinders .040 over, but other wise the truck is all original even to the stock AM radio. its my baby, even though i only get 8 miles per galon

I am fortunate to drive a brown 1988 cutless cieara. It's canadian and pretty big. The set back though is that it is a 4 cyl. engine so I can get up to 65 mph in about 30 sec.

Then there's the Taurus SHO, the ultimate "sleeper". 0-60 in 6.4 seconds (Source: Car and Driver), Top Speed of 141 MPH (Source: Me :D). Mine is a pristine completely stock white '94 with a 5-speed manual. The engine is a 3.0 liter V6 that's actually made by Yamaha. This is what mine kinda looks like (I don't have a sunroof or a front license plate).

I remember hearing about the Marauder two years ago, and couldn't wait for it to come out. Then this last Summer, when it finally showed-up at the local dealership, I found out that it was actually slower than my SHO. Given that the SHO was both paid for and faster, I got cold feet and walked away dissapointed.

Things are looking up 'cause Ford may build this, the 427. 590 HP in a big ol 'merican sedan. Life is sweet :).

course, old school would be nice, also, I'd take the '74 dodge police car from the Blues Brothers.
Twenty years ago, when I had far less sense, a buddy dragged me to an auction house where they were auctioning off vehicles for the city of Los Angeles. He wanted me to go so I could drive his car home in case he bought a car at auction. Well, he ended up buying *two* ex-LAPD detective cars. They were both 1970 Plymouths, each with 383 ci engines. I ended-up buying, for $550, a 1971 Plymouth Satellite that had the nicest sounding "383 Magnum" engine you could imagine. It was the ultimate "beater". If God owned a muscle car, I'd be willing to bet it sounded just like my car. If you've ever seen the movie Bullitt, my ol' Plymouth sounded just like that '69 Charger. But, alas, the fun (temporarally) ended when the timing chain broke and took all sixteen valves with it. After saving enough money to get the heads rebuilt, I took the whole top of the engine to the world-renowned Mopar builder, Dick Landy, out in the San Fernando Valley. Parked out front was a most beautiful sight: A completely stock-looking '69 426 Hemi-powered Charger Superbee I knew immediatly that I was in the right place :D (I would later find out that the superbee belonged to Dick's son, Robert).

A month later I got my heads and intake manifold back and installed them. And as I had hoped, I was rewarded with a small but very noticable boost in horsepower (Did I mention it sounded good too?). I drove that car for another five years until I was T-boned by a driver, who I would later find out, had gotten four tickets in the previous year. My beloved battered old Plymouth was totaled:(.

I'm hoping that the whole mid-life crisis thing kicks in soon so that I can justify buying one of those muscle cars that I remember on the streets of my youth. While I'm waiting, maybe I'll go rent "Bullitt" one more time :D.

-Kevin

(Brandon, what am I doing wrong, I can't get it to show as an image)

Unfortunaly, I learned about loss of traction the expensive way, and now need to either rebuild it or buy a new one. I so want to rebuild it, but don't know what is broken or even how to tell if something is broken.:(

(Ice on corner, met curb at 15-20 MPH. Wheel shoved against the wheel well. Drove it home on the mini-spare)

While I drive a Saturn SL1 for day to day use, I prefer the white short bus that our team takes to local competitions. We got into a race with a short bus from a YMCA on the expressway once. The thing about that short bus is, the speedometer only goes to 50, and you could probably soup it up with an old Keyang motor.

Reed B. 09-01-2003 15:42

Over 100 mph.

A silver 1998 Nissan frontier. 2WD and 4V, which makes one wonder why it's even a truck in the first place.

I drive a polynesian green (you know, that really really, almost day glo bright green) geo metro. The only car that has only 3 cylinders and a grand total of 55hp. Her name is Thelma. :) She might be only a step above a lawnmower...but I love her anyway. :D

1996 Ford Contour. Nice little red thing. The driver-side door is a pain to get open...sometimes I just get in the passenger side. The battery got replaced recently. The cig lighter doesnt work (not that I smoke...but charging my phone would be nice)

I added a Pioneer HU ($180 or so), Kenwood 5x7's for front (5707 or something like that) and just recently Infinity 5x7's for the rear. I should have bought 6x8's since that's what actually fits the car...but nooo...I get 5x7's...well, all I can say is that I got to drill 8 new holes in my car :P Now I'm installing new Infinity front's for my sis's 99 Contour (8 more holes in her car! but I ended up with leftover screws...not sure where they came from)

I can also drive a 00 or 01 Ford Focus or a ...uhh...I forget the year...the older-style Chevy trucks...it's pretty new...just not the new styling. It was RIGHT before they switched.

Ohh yeah...and my car hasn't been washed since summer. They put cinders on the highway and I live on a dirt road. My car looks brown. Heh...there's mud on the roof of my car. Big puddles are fun :D

I cruize around in a 71' Chevelle with a 350 small block and around 600 HP.

This thing will do a 0-60 in under 3.5 seconds, and has a quarter-mile time of 10.27 seconds. Top speed is only 120 MPH though, because of the rear diff 456 gearing.

I hate most of the cars on the road today. They arn't built like they used to be. Muscle is way better than economy. And don't even get me started on ricers :p . Honda Civics were never meant to have more than 200 HP or so!

Re: What do you all drive?

I own 3 cars (two are paid for, the Toyota I'm still making payments on).

My "everyday" car is a 1997 Toyota Camry LE. It's gray with gray interior and a 4cyl engine. I bought the car in '01 as a replacement for my Caprice. It had come into the local Saturn dealer where I found it on the lot. I will never buy a new car for the simple fact of how much money you lose in driving one off the showroom floor. I like cars that are 4-6 years old.

I have a 1987 Chevrolet Caprice Classic wagon (9 passenger) I've owned since July of '95. It's gold with blonde trim (fake woodgrain) and saddle colored interior. It currently has just under 167,000 miles on the factory Oldsmobile 307 in it. The car is in good condition but the motor is tired. It uses oil (2 quarts a week if I use it all week) but I'm hoping to replace it soon. I've always maintained it but it was a company fleet vehicle before I owned it so who really knows how much use is on the motor. It should have had a hour meter since the motor was never shut off. It runs good and still is dependable but you just have to keep an eye on the oil level otherwise the motor will be finished off quick. This is my "second" car after being retired from being my everyday driver for 6 years shortly after the oil consumption started. I still use it and take it on some trips since letting a car sit is one of the worst things you could do. The main reason I kept this car is because Saturn decided all they'd give me in trade for it would be $100 because of the age and milelage. I currently have plans to restore this car since full size wagons are a dying breed and the last thing I want is this car going to the salvage yard or becoming a demo car.

My third car is the 1968 Ford Mustang in my Who Am I Pic. I've owned it since March of '98. I use it for shows and cruises only and it's off the road from the first snowfall (whenever that is) till late April or early May when most of the salt and sand is off the roads. I'm the fifth owner and have researched and spoke to the cars owners going back to the second. I did locate the first owner and sent her a letter but I haven't gotten a response. It lived in California until early '93 when it came to Connecticut. I've already redone the interior and partially redone the mechanics and replaced some of the wiring harnesses. Alot of the chrome is new but it does need some bodywork. I know the passenger door needs a new skin since it took a hit at some point and has bondo on it. The drip rails on the roof also have some rust which was covered up. The battery area sheetmetal under the hood is corroded and crinkled and needs to be replaced. The car is still it's original color of Acapulco blue but it's a repaint. It still has it's original 289 motor (82,000 documented miles on it) C4 tranny and nonlocking 2.79-1 rear end. It's other factory options are power steering, AM radio, tinted glass (5%), deluxe seatbelts (as a matter of fact seatbelts were an option back then!), and two options it no longer has, white wall tires and deluxe wheel covers. I did add one option to it though, an original clock I purchased and had it redone and converted internally to a quartz movement before I installed it.

[EDIT] I just wanted to add the cars I no longer have.

My first car I ever owned was a 1982 Dodge Omni. The previous owner had kept gas in the car and kept it washed and waxed but never did anything else to it. It was blue with blue interior with the 2.2 4cyl under the hood and 4 on the floor. The car looked great but had many mechanical problems that kept creeping up from the previous lack of maitenance. I knew this when I bought it and got it real cheap but after I started dumping way to much money into an Omni and not seeing any end to the problems I sold it. It was replaced by the Citation.

I also had a 1981 Chevrolet Citation (unfortunately it wasn't an X-11  ). It was a biege 2 door hatchback that was a 'hand-me-down' from my parents. It was also a 4cyl with 4 on the floor. It had power steering and brakes and an AM-FM mono radio. These cars had a verticle radio in them if you know what I'm talking about. They were mounted "sideways". This is one car I miss. It ran great and had no trouble going through snow. The interior was badly sun faded and had some minor rust starting to form. We wound up donating the car to the Kidney Foundation when the brakes failed and we decided not to fix the car. It had 130,000 miles on it when we got rid of it. My Caprice replaced this car.

I also bought another 1968 Ford Mustang for parts only. It was in a farmers field for 11 years and the bottom 4-5 inches of the car physically wasn't there anymore. It had sunk to it's axles in mud. It was a 200 ci 6 cyl, with a C4 tranny and was green with black interior. I dismantled this car for parts. I still have most of the parts but the carcass was disposed of. Technically it could have been restored since they make all the repro panels but it needed major work and being just a 6 cylinder coupe it wasn't worth it.

Replace the engine? I'll help rebuild it if you want to. If it runs good, but burns oil, you should be able to fix it rather inexspensively (though that is not always the case). I just don't know how to work on a car in CT, while I live so far away.

As for my cars:
Right now I drive a '68 Dodge Dart. I drive it all year long...and it does take a beating, but I am slowly getting it back to excellent condition...the mechanical work comes before the cosmetic work.

I also have a '73 Dodge Dart sitting at the shop that i work at when back at home. I got it for free, and will give it to anyone for free. It runs and drives, but stalls after it warms up. It is a major eyesore and also smells pretty bad inside. I may be pulling the engine, to rebuild and then put in my '68.

My first car was a '72 SAAB 99E. I never got to drive it in the year and a half that I had it. After I got my Dart, my attention changed to the running car that was in better condition. So after several months of the SAAB occupying the garage at the dislike of my parents, it was junked...minus a few parts that are still lying around. Dave got a set of NICE alloy rims that came with the car. (That extra set of wheels was one of many many extra parts and pieces that I got with the car).

Well since we're bringing this thread back to life and nobody's said it yet... I drive a three-horsepower, 18 km/h, two-speed, six-motor manual tranny Blizzard. It's the 2004 model.

I don't own a car.

I drive a 2003 Volkswagen Golf TDI. Its 2-door and silver. I love it. It has power when I need it. Oh by the way TDI stands for turbo diesel injection. Yeah its diesel, yeah I know its bad for the environment, but it has the most power i have seen in a car with a 1.9 liter engine. It came with the Monsoon sound system. It is pretty good in terms of stock systems but I am going to change that. No interior or engine mods but I think I am going to put in a bigger turbo if it still comes within EPA regs.

Diesel is NOT bad for the environment anymore. Early diesels were loud and nasty, but diesels today are just as quiet as gas powered cars and get better milage.

I want a TDI.

Also in another year or two, fuel suppliers in the U.S. are going to switch to a low sulfur diesel fuel that will burn cleaner and futher cut down on emissions. This low sulfur diesel is currently available in Europe where diesels are more popular.

Okay yeah thats true. Diesels are not as bad for the enviorment as they used to be. And they do have great gas mileage. My parents, aunt, uncle, and little sister went to Las Vegas from here in L.A with the air conditioning on, their luggage, and all the other stuff that could ruin gas mileage on one tank of gas. Impressive

Numbers mean nothing without context.

It is only 270 miles, it isn't all that impressive. My parents van can go from my house in Northern Virginia to upstate New York on one tank of gas, and have a quarter tank left. Thats 373 miles. Going a certain distance on a tank of gas is not impressive by itself. You need to consider how big the tank of gas is, the van has a 27 gallon tank, so going 373 miles isn't all that impressive.

Remember, numbers mean nothing if you don't understand them.

Okay sorry. I didn't really clarify my story. They went from here to Vegas and back. And it only has a 14 gallon tank. I'm not trying to argue or brag. I'm just clarifying.
