Let's see...
  • ✓ An electromechanical assembly (Nerve endings transmit electric signals, and I would certainly call dog movement mechanical)
  • ✓ Built by the FIRST® Robotics Competition Team to perform specific tasks when competing in FIRST® STEAMWORKS. (Dog is a COTS item, and training has made an impression on the mind of the dog. Thus, the dog has been built by the team.)
  • 1/2 ✓ The ROBOT must include all of the basic systems required to be an active participant in the game – power, communications, control, BUMPERS, and movement. (Slap some bumpers and a control system on there and you're ready to go!)
  • ✓ The ROBOT implementation must obviously follow a design approach intended to play FIRST STEAMWORKS (See photo)

You could also in theory train the dog to stop sitting when it hears the charge sound and sit when it hears a buzzer or a foghorn, so the FMS can have control over enabling/disabling.

How would E-Stop work.

Have them yell "Sit!" really loudly.

So far, so good. However, ::rtm::

:( <R01> This robot appears to have an articulated frame perimeter. Shouldn't be too hard to find a work around, though. Make a frame from the 4 pieces of 1" square tube that came in the KoP ...

The more serious issue is:

:) <R11> This robot is priceless, no doubt!

I think you're headed back to the drawing board.

I think we're forgetting the real question.

No, no, no. You're forgetting what the frame perimeter is. It needs to go around the head. The tail should be acceptable if you bend it back before the match starts.

The dog can pull its head back behind the bumper until the start of the match, much like the tail.

Huh interesting mechanism... how about the volume?

Depends on the breed of dog. Some golden retrievers are quite large, but I'm sure they fit within the volume requirements. The largest possible volume looks something like this. So long as the dog fits within that, you're good to go.

I have seen some messed up threads on CD before, but this is the first time I can remember that someone confused bumper with dog gear. :p

You have to keep in mind that the doggo (or pupper) must stay within their volume for the entire match, and that the volume includes bumpers.

Right but they can still break frame perimeter.

So what should we expect from an inspector at our competition?

Just make sure the "robot" doesn't "soil the field"

Hi Samueldobens,

It's nice to hear you're making such great progress, I'm always surprised with how fast teams of students and mentors turn out their robots! I think you accidentally uploaded the wrong photo though because it's showing a picture of a dog (I'm more of a cat person myself) and not your robot! I've done the same thing myself though, not too great with computers over here.

30 miles per hour on a robot for these games is very fast! I'm worried that it might be a bit difficult to drive, like trying to take a Monte Carlo through a parking lot at full speeds! Either way look forward to seeing the robot photo when you fix up the image.

Best Regards,
RM
