How fast will you score a gear on a side peg in auto?

We all know that scoring gears on the side peg will be more difficult than scoring in the center peg. However, it may potentially also be more useful for multiple reasons. How much longer will it take to score a side gear than a center gear in autonomous?

between 0 and 10 seconds. not doing both gear and fuel so just enough time for HP to place it in the first rotor slot.

as i understand it, there is no benefit to two gears in auto. i don't expect to personally witness a three gear auto in my life. (we are going to only one competition in Week 1).

20+ gears/second @ 91%-100% accuracy.

How do we know it's not a drill press?

Well, there is still a benefit to a 2 gear auto. It means you start teleop with that additional gear, so you have one fewer to place during that period. It also provides evidence during quals of your robot's autonomous ability. If I'm in a picking position and have a choice between a team that successfully placed a gear in every match, versus one that only did it half the time because the second gear "had no benefit", I would pick the one that did it every time.

I've had these arguments before. Essentially, the inconsistency and effort put into a two gear auto is much more than just cheesecaking a gear box and some "go forward" code onto a pushbot.

To do a good two gear auto, you need to:

1. Place your first gear quickly.
2. Vision track to a gear that your partner left on the floor (hopefully). If it doesn't land on the floor, you're screwed. If it's in a weird position, like resting at an angle against the wall or at a 90 degree angle, you're screwed. If your vision tracking software doesn't navigate correctly, you're screwed. This is the hard bit, if you can't tell, and I think maybe 3ish teams in the world have the capability to pull it off.
3. Pick up gear. I personally don't think floor pickup is really worth it, but it does help in certain situations. This part isn't hard if you manage to find the gear.
4. Navigate back to the airship. You're already probably vision tracking the tape next to the pegs, this part isn't hard at all
5. Pilot has to take the gear and slot it in and start the rotor if you want to do a two rotor auto with two robots (this is assuming that the only one of the robots on the alliance is able to place a gear).

Not saying it's not going to happen, it's just really hard and, imho, not worth it.

My assumption was 2 gears scored by the alliance, not 2 gears by a single robot. Scoring 1 gear gets you the auto bonus for a single rotor. Scoring 2 gears gets the exact same bonus. Scoring 3 gears gets you the bonus for 2 rotors. So I could easily see teams decide to skip the gear and go for balls instead if they have an alliance member that can score one, but they know their alliance can't score 3. And while that strategy may earn them a couple more points, it may not be the right strategy to get picked.

I'm expecting under 10 seconds.

At the latest week 6 is when we will see a 3 gear auto, to go against what was said earlier in the thread.. im kinda hoping to see one as early as week 3...

My scenario was based on a third robot that was able to score both a gear and some balls.
