Crazy Driverstations
I was wondering what the most interesting control station you've ever seen is.
What made it awesome? Whose was it? Where did you see it? |
Re: Crazy Driverstations
1768 has a really long one with a custom button panel. It has wheels on one bottom edge so one of the drive team members can drag it along with them.

Re: Crazy Driverstations
I don't think anything I've seen compares with the huge screens and camera poles a few teams used last year.

Re: Crazy Driverstations
2011 a team, whom I can't remember, had a custom board that was a scale model of their three jointed armor. They could control the arm at different positions using a scaled down model of their arm on the driver station.

Re: Crazy Driverstations
In 2007 we used a guitar hero controller for our Rack 'n Roll robot, fitting, no?

Re: Crazy Driverstations
I once made a nice wearable DS that we called "the baby carrier." Good times, walking around and driving the robot.

![]() We used this setup for the past 3 years |
Re: Crazy Driverstations
If I remember correctly, 1625 had a marching band snare drum harness where they would put their console during teleop.

Re: Crazy Driverstations
My favourite, which would be a good one to recreate for this year.

Re: Crazy Driverstations
Spartan Robotics, using a wheel from a racing sim. Especially impressive since it got them to Worlds in 2015, where control was the game.
Also, one of the Einstein teams (maybe Beach Bots) used a guitar hero controller for scaling the castle last year. |

Re: Crazy Driverstations
While it wasn't crazy as the season progressed, I remember seeing 3419's driver station during week 6 last year and thinking it was nuts. They had a HUGE (like >30") display and a camera pole. I thought it was nuts and there was no way it would be legal.
Turns out it was. For like two weeks. From what I hear TVR ruled it unsafe while NYC had no problem with it. |

You don't actually need closed loop to do it though - it's completely workable as open loop as well. The nice part about it is that it encourages you to keep your velocity as you turn, instead of doing the drive-turn-drive that a lot of people driving tank tend to do. |
Re: Crazy Driverstations
I saw one from team 341 "Miss Daisy" a number of years ago that was covered with artificial turf and a few flowers growing out of it.

Re: Crazy Driverstations
How has no one mentioned this great driverstation????

On this note, has it been determined if this is legal to do again this year? With the airships obstructing the view as badly as they do I could see how it would be useful to have. Quote:
The only downside was that the mechanism was so heavy they could only put a hook at the end of the arm, making it somewhat ineffective (but very cool to watch). |

Re: Crazy Driverstations
My alma mater always does a really nice driver's station. I couldn't find any pictures of the one from 2016, but here is the one from 2015! We always got many compliments on it, but I'm sad there's none of 2016.
In 2016, we had a 24 in monitor on our driver's station in addition to the graphics. https://www.flickr.com/photos/131241...7649593494914/ |
