Human

Does anyone know an easy way to create a human model?

Trashed20 03-01-2003 20:11

hehe, thats funny! really, hehe......

:ahh: There is no easy way!:ahh:

make some cubes, model the crap outa them, mesh smooth, make some bones, hope it looks good..... pray

Its a lot of work and it usually doesn't look the way you want it to.

They have quite a few over at Macy's.

Oh, you mean the other kind of model, sorry I'm not proficient in that stuff.

Chris Nowak 03-01-2003 21:50

I agree with the above posts that there is absoluteley no easy way to model a human. And thats just modeling. Texturing and animation are 2/3 of the work load there too, unless you are planning on having a still, completely grey character. Really, you shouldnt attempt this unless you have a ton of time(like over 120+ hours) on your hands or if you already are very experienced with other areas of max or another modeling program. I would suggest going to some of the tutorial sites and looking around if you really want to do this.

Oh yeah, if you wanna do it the cheap way, go and buy Poser 4 for $400 and use one of the ready made models. But I personnally dont like that program as I think the animation is kind of crappy and the interface is downright confusing. Plus, you can only change the models so much until they start looking very weird.

If you just decided to put a character in your animation and this is your first year, I would say that it may be a little too ambitious for you. If you have someone willing to put in that much time, then go for it but have a backup plan cuz It might not turn out the way you think it will.

There was a link two months back or so on Popular Science in their Internet section. It was to a page at Vector Lounge (awesome site)... it featured a Flash program which demostrated humans walking and similar things. You could drag tons of joints and make the thing fly. It was so cool and well done. There were different views and you could have two skeletons at one time. If someone finds that URL, tell me. It's a good example of learning how to animate human movement.

You were able to just "throw" that mesh together? You must be an awesome modeler. ;)

this is all I've ever done, and this took me quite a long time, and it isnt even that good. I actually did this with Nurbs in Rhino.

Skanker 05-01-2003 00:11

dude, if you are a newbit to MAX, don't even bother TRYING right now. it's SUPER hard. I spent DAYS working on just a FACE. it STILL didn't come out very well.

HOWEVER: if you are extremely masochistic (one that likes to bring pain on themselves), and dont sleep---EVER... you can try building with patches. just pull and move around the vertices, and grow the edges and play with the lattices... AND THEN you have to add hair (which is REALLY REALLY hard without a plugin to do it for you)... it's really confusing, and frustrating.

I think that 3dcafe.com has a tutorial on creating human faces... you can use that as a basis to create the whole body.

Sorry if I discourage you. but I don't want you to be in over your head. only advanced modelers are able to create believeable human figures and maintain any kind of sanity. If you are a beginner, stick to inanimate and/or simpler objects for the time being. TRUST ME--you get better as you work with the basics.

DigiMation has some really cool 3dsmax plugins that do just about anything you could ever want. Unfortunately, they're far from free.

if anyone has some money check out digimation.com and I gaurentee they'll be able to help you make a human...but for about 500 dollars.

LizJJury 06-01-2003 13:03

Well, you could try going to Turbo Squid and seeing if they have any free or inexpensive humans you can download from the site. It is also a great place to pass time by looking through the animation.

Well, Materials can make the model:
Since i have close to zero skill, i put the ink 'n paint material on a face i made. it covers all of those flaws you can't fix. take alook:

justin.yi.org:99/~vanweric/
then go to the pics folder. I know my website sucks

I sure hope you submit an animation in ink n' paint form. That would be sweet.

Markfuscius 14-01-2003 01:39

Interesting faces.
Quick thing about Ink n Paint: Last I checked, it's about two times slower than radiosity, which takes 20 minutes to calculate for a scene about 1/10 as complex as we're having in our final animation which would just look terrible without it. So, really, unless you're running 2+ ghz machines with at least 768 if not 1024 of ddr ram, I don't suggest Ink n Paint, no matter that it looks REALLY sweet. Of course, that's just my opinion. I'd really like to see someone with 2 or 3 weeks straight of render time to put together a Cel shaded animation (if they have the massive skill to do humans, maybe even an anime-based submission ^.^)

VanWEric 14-01-2003 17:38

well, i do work for a place with giant server racks... perhaps i can steal their unused cycles. lets see, 10 racks * 20 servers * 1gb ram a piece (on avg)...

Too bad they dont have gfx cards.

Maybe my new job will have some nice farm. They do video compression...

Heehee

Soukup 14-01-2003 19:39

well..if you worked like or team..cell shading would be possible..start rendering some sequences in week 3-4 and you'd be okay. Net rendering on just a couple computers that are decnt, wouldn't be tough at all...but an anime qulaity render would be tough..I agree.
