A new record for breaking a drill motor

I am here to annouce that I, Zachary Dobbin of Team 686 manganed to break one of our drill motors only 15 minutes after opening the kit of parts. I was looking at the drill gearbox with the motor and all of the suddent the drill motor fell out and landed on the table before rolling off and crashing onto the concrete floor. One of the leads fell out and some plastic cracked resulting in that motor becoming usless. Anyone else have problems this early in the season?

DanLevin247 04-01-2003 18:46

You break parts, we break people.

We haven't had a competition without someone getting hurt.

Spikey 04-01-2003 19:11

LOL I hope I don't do that when I inventory! Are the new motors any better?

mtaman02 04-01-2003 19:44

lol didn't even assemble the robot yet and already breaking things. well that is a record 15 minutes, anyway i believe this years are much more powerful since there 1/2" drive this time

Bduggan04 04-01-2003 19:45

I think the motor selection is much better this year.

For starters, FIRST improved the old motors, making the bosch tougher (barring it being dropped) and by putting a usable output shaft on the Atwood motor.

They also brought back the old Van Door motors, which were much better than the other low rpm output motors (It's got a metric shaft on it still:( ).

AdamT 04-01-2003 21:10

Don't worry, I think there is a slight defect in the leads on the drill motors. We opened the box and one of the leads on one of the drill motors was off....I think they may snap back in easily.

I've actually this seen on the history channel (modern marvels:then and now). They drop Bosch drills from 3 or 4 feet when they test them. This is supposed to help it???????? I think you've found a new job.
:D

It's true, look it up.

That would be with casing and all....not exposed motor (this would be my best guess)

Al Skierkiewicz 05-01-2003 09:38

Hey Zach,
Most people wouldn't admit to dropping a part but we can all learn from your experience. Round parts do roll and gravity can't be ignored! Either work on a table with raised edges or work on the floor. Oh well, at least you get to take it apart and check out what's inside. What are the rivets in the case for? We are guessing they hold in the magnets. What is the guage of the armature wire?
Well the big day is here, did anybody sleep last night?

andy 05-01-2003 22:42

what's funny is I haven't even looked at the kit since about 30 min after the kickoff. I've been writing a lit paper! fun. Well in our school it will be tough to find time to build the bot but it will happen. FEAR US! Go Gear Grinders! Sick'em WOOF!
-Andy

PS. Even if the bot turns out bad (probably not) we will bring our cheerleaders and maybe the band! watch out! we're coming!

Haha, same here, we've already had a busted lip and two cut fingers.

Al Skierkiewicz 07-01-2003 07:23

I'll pass on wanting to see what's in there!

15 Seconds!!! That's my record for the darn Drill Motor breaking apart in my hands after I picked the stupid thing up!

tatsak42 14-01-2003 01:03

mmm.. i tried to rotate the clutch, instead, took off the top and had the rings and stuff fall out. eh... very quickly, <1 minute... prolly about 25 seconds... heh... got it back together tho, not broken!

KennethToronto 14-01-2003 01:45

Check out my thread in the "MOTORS" area :D

I was checking out the drill motor this morning and the exact same thing happened...it just somehow slipped out of my hand, rolled onto the table, and then fell onto the floor, resulting in one of the contacts falling off and the flimsy piece of plastic holding it there snapping off

Then I had to go tell my staff advisor what I happened :)

Yes but we (247) had a major concussion which included internal bleeding and a pulled ligament in someone's knee.

(By the by, to those who know about Chris's concussion, he's fine now)

Greg Perkins 14-01-2003 08:26

the new drills are hella powerful this year, our team last night ran them with the helical gear setup...the setup really sucks. since u are using helical gears, it puts horizontal pressure on the shafts resulting in the retianing clips to shoot off the shafts, no ta good sign, when u are testing out the set up, but no worries, our team is gonna make our own mounts and things

o btw, running with the 10" skyway wheels, the drills on the high speed high gear setting proved to be very difficult to control.
Bad

Gobiner 15-01-2003 14:23

We pulled out the drill motor and the lead just popped out. Didn't even take 5 seconds.

chellyzee93 15-01-2003 18:10

We had the exact same thing happen to one of our drill motors.. It could not be fixed.Needless to say no one was very happy about it.

maxgebhardt 15-01-2003 19:32

other stuff

i guess we're pretty tame, all we did was let me put the assemblies together, where first I did it without washers, denting the plastic, then re doing it where the washers were a tad bit too big for the assembly, so of course I forced them on, bending them backwards and folding them over, and scratching the plastic as well. we also dragged last years robot out of cold storage, and found later, that some class held in our room found nothing better to do than play with the shiny robot and kick it like a soccer ball, luckily they didn't find the hacksaw...

Can you guys post a picture of the failure, Please? It would be helpful for everyone.

One of the rookie teams we are mentoring had something similar happen. When we were opening the drill motor box, there were very small plastic shards in the packaging. Seeing them was my first clue that something bad was lurking within. The whole brush assembly popped out when I picked up the motor because one of the mounts for the brushes was broken.

Sorry Al, nobody had a camera so no pictures. Since it wasn't dropped by us I had them call FIRST and see about a new motor. I haven't heard what came of it yet though.

Al Skierkiewicz 16-01-2003 14:42

I will surely bring this up at our electrical meeting tonight. We will examine the motor a little closer than we have so far.

All of you must Go there! Dave Lavery put together a powerpoint slide show explaining how the drill motors are assembled. It might be Very Helpful to us who break things easily!
