Teams try to make a 30 second animation using 3-D Studio Max representing their team. A sort-of commercial for their team.

Autodesk Visualization Award.

I read the rules, but do you think you can use other software for the AVA?

My favorite 3D software is Anim8or.

Devil's Kid 06-01-2003 16:26

umm, according to what i read, the animation has the same theme as last year and its "What FIRST means to you"

No. Autodesk is kind enough to donate 3D Max each year to every team, and they don't want the *Autodesk* Visualization Award to goto someone using Maya.

In the Entry Form, it says;

Quote:

Describe which Autodesk products you used…and how. Also, name and describe other design, visualization, or animation software products you used in your animation.
Please note the word "other". They mention Autodesk software before the word "other".

Anyway, our team is not a school, and we can only have Max on one computer. What are we supposed to do when it's being used for something else, watch Chicken Run for the 1,000,000,000th time while the deadline rapidly aproaches.

Yeah, I cant ever remember anyone officially clarifying whether or not one may use other software, but I think that they cant really go against it as Its pretty much impossible to tell what program you made a movie with.

I would also like to say, however, that you should give strong consideration to using 3dsmax even if you have more experience with Maya or other programs. It is a very strong 3d program and one of the ones companies use the most. For example, Blizzard uses 3dsmax for their cg scenes, and if you've seen them, especially the ones in Warcraft III, its pretty incredible.

Every company uses something different. Please don't begin the argument that one software is better than the other, cuz not only is it a matter of opinion, until the entire animation industry begins using one program, its not really true for any one program. If you are planning on going into animation it will be incredibly valuable to learn 3dsmax, and thats just how it goes.

Anim8or is NOT better then Max. It IS free. We CAN run it on more the one PC. Max can NOT be on more then one PC. We CAN work on Anim8or at HOME.

A team member has already built the arena in Anim8or.

The Awards_03.pdf also says this:

Quote:

6.1 Award Overview
All FIRST teams are invited to create a submission for the Autodesk Visualization Award (AVA) using 3ds max™.
And under the scoring criteria

Quote:

Technical Execution (20pts) - Distinction in the application of Autodesk software. The challenge is to demonstrate how skillfully you use specific Autodesk products and how your final animation is brought together from storyboard through design, production, editing, adding FX and sound, and post-production to final product.
So if you are attempting to win the award, then you are shooting yourself in the foot. If you are making one to make one, then use other things as well.
