reflective tape

does anyone know the ruling of putting the reflective tape similar to the bins, on your robot?

Eric Reed 07-01-2003 22:57

Adhesive tape for non-insulating purposes is specifically disallowed (See fig 4-1).

I wonder how hard it is to make some other surface retroreflective, or if there is some other retro-reflective material you can buy.

Eric.

what about the actual reflectors that Banning makes, not the adhesive tape but hard solid reflectors... like bike reflectors?

illumanat'i 08-01-2003 22:27

while i don't know about putting a bike reflector on the robot (even if it sounds illegal to me), what i want to know is

WHY?

the only thing i see coming out of it is getting other robots, maybe even your ally, to go to you thinking your bot's a stack, and then they just try to kill your bot instead of the stack... that can't be good and it would probably be ruled as your fault

If you can claim that the reflectors are a non-functional decoration, then it would be allowed.
Chances are the other robots will not start in such a position that they will be able to "see" your tape anyways.

Non-Functonal Decoration

This wouldn't classify as a non-functional decoration as it would the possibility of affecting match outcome. This would seem to violate part 2 of Rule M9. Actual reflectors could probably be used some other way, at least until there's a team update on this matter.

hey fridge Thanks for you input. I guess it's time I whip out the rule book again! hehe I guess it's a good idea for a designer to actually know such rules as these..

np

No problem. Our team had just gone through the same idea yesterday and had run into the same problems. It's just a brainstorming idea, but i remember that's one reason why we couldn't do it.

But we are allowed to jam their RF signal right?
