What computer games do you love to play?

If the subject didnt give it away, what games do all of you play? I myself prefer strategy, fps, and rpg. Also, do you know of any good shareware games that could be used on a cd to distribute to you cool people at a competition?

AdamT 08-01-2003 21:30

computer games? who has time for computer games? ;)

DarkRedDragon 08-01-2003 21:32

lol, i do, when im not building the robot, or am doing a billion and one things for school.

srjjs 08-01-2003 22:49

If someone wrote a simple game that allowed you to drive boxes around on the playing field, I could play that and claim to be doing "robotics stuff."

Write your own .. in a way. Let me point you (and others who havent seen this) to this lovely game: RoboCode.
You program an AI robot in Java, if I remember correctly. It was pretty addicting. Im a geek.

I'm a FPS and an RTS kind of person. I like Quake 1-3, Unreal (tourny), RTCW and things like that. Big fan of the red laert series.

Great shareware stuff is Commander Keen. There are 7 eps (Keen 106 & keen dreams) I think 3 or 4 are shareware.

GateRunner 08-01-2003 23:27

Ive always been a fan of RPG's, but a good game of Counterstrike never hurts. Ultima Online, for you RPG fans, is a great one to check out, considering all the possibilities...but thats just me :)

Dink Smallwood has got to be one of the best free games I ever played.

IsabelRinging 09-01-2003 00:26

Ahhh, yes... Robocode.

We've played with that in my Java class for the last couple semesters. Great fun. :D

HolyMasamune 09-01-2003 00:59

RPGs, Strategy games, and some sports names for gaming consoles: i like counterstrike, warcraft 3, diablo 2, age of mythologies, heroes of might and magic 4, jedi outcast, team fortress classic/starcraft (yes, i know they're old)...and some others that I probably can't think of right now

DarkRedDragon 09-01-2003 15:53

holy, what is your name on warcraft, i am fk-reddragon if you want we could play sometime. Anyway, maybe we could do a lan game at a competition, that would be sweet!

Reed B. 09-01-2003 18:00

There are only two kinds of games in the world.
Mechwarrior games, and everything else.

DarkRedDragon 09-01-2003 18:08

very true, mechwarrior is a game genre of its own, such a great storyline and a great game, makes for a #%#%#%#%#%#%#% sieries!

EddieMcD 09-01-2003 18:43

Mechwarrior is cool, especially the new tabletop game Wizkids makes. Anyhow, I like the Command and Conquer series and quite a few other RTS games. I try to stay away from FPS games, but I play Elite Force pretty often, and I'm waiting for EF2. RPGs are great, but only the medieval ones where I can fling a lightning bolt at someone. I have a free MMORPG called Tibia which you can get here. I recomend it to anyone interested in the genre. And of course, I love the Worms series. The Sims is the best for passing time (and finding out that I can't get a girl at the virtual level too). I still play Freedom Force every now and then (I even made The Hurricane). Space sims are fun. I'm still waiting for Freelancer (Starlancer will have to do for now). Uhh... I know I've forgotten something somewhere, but that's my taste in gaming.

[edit] right, right, put in a link! gah. link button not working. www.roboforge.com [/edit]

What? Roboforge is not known here?!

D/L the demo. You will be hooked. . . . .

If you like it, buy it, its 20 dollers softwrap. I bought it the day after i tryed the demo. Its great, and has a great community, but the community is small so there is very seldom others online.

Here is a summary:

You build a robot. You choose from 8 Chassis, some floating, some legged, some wheeled.

Then, you get 20k credits to spend on it.

This includes non functional connectors, Energy sources, controllers (brains) sensors, weapons (90% damage reduction to these parts, and they deal 90% increased damage or something like that), sheilds (same as weapons but w/o the damage bonus), and rotators (parts that spin, cannot control them) and joints (moving parts you can control.

Once you have it built, you put in 'move's by positioning joints and them recording their position. You can order the robot to move those joints to that position by calling the move.

Then you program. This is the interesting part. Run codes, for when you are winning so that the 3 minutes expires and you win on health. Intercepts to track those guys down. Adaptive, to react differently to a hammer or a spinner or a slider bot. all sorts of aiming stuff. The works.

Then you test it. You can 'run' fights between it and any other bbot you have saved. when you run a fight it shows a low-quality, choppy version while i is calculating, but once it is done you can watch the recording, full 3d, rotate, zoom, change focus, everything, and then you can save the recording.

THen you go to the challenge room, where you can fight your bot againt other people's bots online, in the program. Great fun when people are there. You can watch other people battles, also, great place for n00bs to get their act together.

Then you enter it in tournaments. The tournaments are every other day or so, you submit your bot before the due date, after the due date you log on and the results are posted . . you can watch all of your bot's battles, the semi finals and finals, and you can recomend battles not in the semis or finals to be available for everyone to watch . . . .

All in all, an amazing game.

but . . .. save early and save often. It freezes quite often.ROBOFORGE! ROBOFORGE!

D.J. Fluck 09-01-2003 19:28

Im in the middle of my NHL 2002 Season (im too cheap to spend 40 bucks to buy 2003)

OneAngryDaisy 09-01-2003 19:42

Anyone ever play Mechcommander? No? Try it.

but as for classics- nothing, absolutely nothing can beat civilization.. I still have it on an ancient comp in my room (600 KB drive) along with commander keen, cosmic cosmo, and x-com

oh yeah- anyone ever play x-com? The first one, that is- also one of the best games ever..

mgreenley 09-01-2003 19:56

What a coincidence, I also am a huge fan of Sid Mier and his Civilization series. Wait, what a larger coincidence, we're on the same team! Wait, why am I doing this online then?

Other decent games are:
2)Age of Mythology (If you straighten out the .DLL file problem which I haven't, so its a very nice paperweight)
3)Shattered Galaxy (Former lvl.70+ overlord)
4)Any sort of mech game that isn't an arcade rip-off (Anything made before 2002)
5)Battlefield 1942 (killed a man just to watch him curse me off in the chat box)

However CIV III reigns supreme and is unchallenged in its glory.

Whoa whoa whoa- are you forgetting Civ I? Go back, play it, and tell me that Civ III is better-

gimmicks+graphics+more gimmicks= fake fun

mgreenley 09-01-2003 20:12

I see your point.

DarkRedDragon 09-01-2003 20:19

thanks for the link! do you play warcraft 3 by any chance? also, what is your favorite mech class/type? i love the catapult, so cheap, and so great!

mgreenley 09-01-2003 20:28

Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos?
well I don't qiute play it, I kind of look at the screen and everyone besides me just lays down a dies. Hmm... I swear it, I don't know how I do it.

As for mech games:
Mechwarrior 4 is a nice stress reliever, Command and Conquer Generals is nice stress reliever when I feel like mass murder, but then again Shattered galaxy is a much better way to vent your steam. Too bad they changed all of the units and added ammo.

In the world of mechs Steel Battalion is the best,
but I wish that they could come up with a decent Gundam game, I was rather attached to the Gundam Wing TV show, now they just air that G gundam spam

There's nothing like piloting a mad cat- but i also love vultures for some reason... If you're talking about inner sphere mechs only, then I agree about the catapult

DarkRedDragon 09-01-2003 21:07

its about time you guys found me!

evulish 09-01-2003 21:51

Oooh! Racing games are cool. I like the original NFS:HP...never played the new one. It's so unrealistic that it's cool. I also like the more realistic games (like NASCAR Thunder, the Test Drive (and TD: Off-Road). Also fun. Even more fun is turning the car around and head-on everyone you can :P

heh, thats how I play NASCAR 2001 on ps2 . . . . .

you turn around, and hit the pack on their second lap when your all doing 180mph, they are still all bunched together . . .

Its best to come at them from an angle. Take the front car at his left front corner with your front center. I once made 12/19 other cars go into the pits (collisions are unrealistic, and you cant make them more so) after the race there is an instant replay, the ps2 chooses which higlights to show. So beutiful!

hoods, side panels, back panels, everything flying everywhere . . . the occasional car spinning at several hundred RPMS along its long axis flying past the camera . . . cars doing front flips or backflips down the track . . cars upside down and sliding at 180 mph . . . . cars on fire . . . . .

HAAAAA

Mechcommander is okay. Even the elite pilots seem to have a hard time hitting the broad side of a barn, though.

Mechs by weight (and assuming you're playing MW4: Mercenaries):

Light: Sweet, beautiful Cougar. How I can slap some Medium X-Pulse lasers on you and wreak havoc.

Medium: Shadow Cat. A few thousand players over the 'net can't be wrong.

Heavy: Nova Cat. 4 PPCs and plenty of heat sinks ensures that you will walk like a God amongst the heavies (I've won FFAs with this setup).

Assault: Fafnir is a cool 'mech, but being wider than Rosie O' Donnel's butt is generally not a good thing in Mechwarrior. Daishi and Atlas are now ancient by the game standards, so let's go back to a design that hasn't been seen since the Ghost Bear expansion pack: viva la Gladiator!

JelliBeanoJenni 09-01-2003 23:56

ooh computer games... hehe i don't have very many but lemme see....
i play starcraft anyone wanna play? i have diablo 2 and it's expansion but i haven't played it in a while. total annihilation and Ta:K, CS, i just got warcraft 3 but i'm awful on b-net. my friend's supposed to train me but he hasn't got around to it yet.

MarkF 10-01-2003 04:55

NEOPETS! #%#%#%#% you, Lord Darigan! First you won the war, then you ransack the entire kingdom?!? YOU WILL PAY THROUGH THE NOSE FOR THIS!!!

Anyone else here on neopets? My screename there is dudeguytheman. Feel free to drop me a line, and make sure you put "chiefdelphi" in the subject, or I might not even read it.

Starcraft is the best computer game as far as I'm concerned. "How do I get out of this chicken sh!! outfit?" makes me crack up every time I hear it. Nothing can stop a fleet of, oh, lets say, THIRTY SIX BATTLECRUISERS!!!

*Just a little bit eccentric*

36 Battle Cruisers? BAH! You cannot stop the mighty force of the Huntress/Archmage/Grunt/Ghoul rush!

*Just a little bit insane*

MarkF 10-01-2003 10:23

You do realize, of course, that 25 Battlecruisers (You can only have that many, because the supply limit is 200, and each Cruiser takes 8 spaces) combined can inflict 3750 points of damage to any one unit. My best defense.....this was so hilarious. I built about 25 Siege Tanks and surrounded the enemy Zerg base, setting them into seige mode, but JUST out of range of fire, so they couldn't annihalate the Hatchery. A few SCV's came out and built Missile Turrets to defend the STA-bound (Surface-to-Air) Tanks. The STS-bound turrets made it impossible for the Zerg to build anything outside of their current creep colonies, and just to piss off the opposition, my armament couldn't move, basically creating an impenetrable barrier of defense. The Zerg were totally stuck. It was soooooo fun.

Harrison 10-01-2003 18:45

Battlefield 1942 is where its at.

After that, Quake, UT, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Elite Force, NHL 2002 & 2003 (GO LEAFS GO)

JelliBeanoJenni 10-01-2003 21:51

O.o that zerg player must not have been very good... unless u rushed 'em pretty fast hehe. I mostly play with zerg... oh hehe. anyone wanna help me out with Warcraft 3? i suck relalie bad... but i can beat an easy computer! lol anyways yeah.

Hailfire 10-01-2003 22:32

Strategy, Strategy, Strategy. If you like games like Starcraft, I highly recommend Westwood Studios' Emperor - Battle For Dune (Their first RTS game with superb graphics). In EBFD, you choose amongst 3 sides, the Atreides, the Harkonnen, and the Ordos. All three houses have a unique ability. There are also 5 subhouses for you to ally with along with choosing which territory to attack first. You must also defend your territories. For more information, visit Westwood Studios. I also recommend Earth 2150 and The Moon Project (Sequel to Earth 2150). In Earth 2150, you get to choose your chassis and choose which weapons you want to mount on the chassis. Some advanced weapons allow you to add a subweapon. You must research however and each side (ED - Eurasian Dynasty, UCS - United Civilized States, LC - Lunar Corporation) has a unique thing with them. It also has superb 3D graphics. This is the second and third game I highly recommend for people who like Strategy.

I downloaded that game a year ago. I eventually got tired of it though. It is fun. I actually found it on the TechTV website.:D

I used to be really into Starcraft and Diablo II. I've moved on though since school started, and robotics is back in session.

Has anyone bought The Sims Online? It looks kinda like a waste of $$$.

The Highlander! There can be only one!

But a wolfhound will do just as well if you prefer the lighter mechs.

Scudzey 11-01-2003 19:18

Hmmm, seems like most people are forgeting the best, and most godlike game of all... Counter-Strike. To my count only about 1 or 2 people have brought it up by name.

After that though i play UT2K3, MOHAA, Rainbow Six, Operation Flashpoint, Battelfeild 1942, Wolfenstine, Mechworrior 4, and natural selection. Oh but i can't forget the always good GTA3.

Jeff Waegelin 11-01-2003 21:49

Anyone every played Nexus? Its a very addictive MMORPG. Ive been playing for over four years, and its great. Check it out athttp://www.nexustk.com

Medal of Honor:Allied Assault, I've spent many a day never moving (or blinking) playing non-stop. Also Counter-Strike is ok.....I guess.....well, for a game that can play on my laptop it's good.

Funny 12-01-2003 23:58

I use playing a lot of Warcraft III and CS, but then Robotics came along...

123 13-01-2003 09:37

The one and the only game i like to play is Midtown Madness 2 Multiplayer. :D

MissInformation 13-01-2003 12:13

I tend to like the fantasy based role-playing games, but I also like the simulation games, like Zoo Tycoon, and the Sims and the one I've played most recently, Black and White (you know the one where you are god, good or evil, and you have to get your people to worship you for your kindness or out of fear). I thought I was going to be a wonderfully evil god, but I felt very guilty the first time I did something mean to one of my followers (okay, I was trying to learn how to throw a rock and it wasn't going so well, and the follower kept laughing at me, so I intentionally dropped the rock on him). It's a very funny game, and think I'm going to have to try harder at being evil.

MissInformation

<============>
Okay, I'll also admit I was evil enought to intentionally kill off a couple of my Sims so I could see Death arrive and also so I could have a few ghosts in the game, but I was completely horrified and had to leave the room for the one in the pool.

Koko Ed 14-01-2003 14:04

My wife and I enjoy playing You Don't Know Jack. We also idle time away with Hoyle Board Games(I like playing Parchisi, Chinese Checkers and Zen Bones AKA Mah Johng) and Roof Rats.
I like FPS as well but my wife hates them and our computer is getting too crowded with files to take a gamelike that.

LBK Rules 14-01-2003 23:03

I like playing Star Wars: Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight (Demo, OEM, & Full) & Star Wars: Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight: Mysteries Of The Sith (Demo).

I saw "Max Payne" and "Mafia" at Toys R' Us. How are they?

I might get "Splinter Cell" when it comes out on PC.

"Enter the Matrix" is what I am asking for my birthday.

YES! Need for Speed Hot Pusruit 2!!!! No racing game is better. I just got really mad at it though. I was racing the 10 Lap circuit of the World Championship, with the McLaren F1 LM, and at the very last seconds (I led the first 9 laps) of the final lap, I was passed. I couldn't believe it, lol.

ChrisA 16-01-2003 15:35

Battlefield 1942 (on CAL team for ChicagoGamers)
Counter-Strike (yeah, I hate it too, but can't stop playing)
Empire Earth (just got back into this game cause it's sweet)
WarCraft 3 (won a tourny at LAN in IN with my friend, woot)

Ahh... my fovorite in the series. Gotta love the acting in that one (although Tiberian Sun had good acting and plot). Too bad Westwood screwed the balance in multiplayer with Yuri's Revenge (although the story line was interesting). I only play YR with mods now.

And Generals is coming soon!
