Early Favorites
hi, does anybody have any early favorites?
pesonally, i think that 237 will have a respectable bot this year as well as 60 & 71. an o, watch out for us...er...wait...no bot yet...yea... Bad |
o i cant forget 121 also!
bad |
Why, thank you for that vote of confidence!! We will try not to dissapoint you!!
Team 237's projected date of first manufactured part of robot completed, (1-10-03) <--Today! I hope that our new friends from NYC Team 713 will have better luck this year than they did last year. Go 713! Also, I want to see how all our CT local teams do as well. |
I'm expecting the following to do well:
1 16(i dont mean to be cocky, but i think we'll do good) 47 49 60 71 111 112 118 121 343 All of these teams did well in their previous years, and I expect them to live up to their reputations. Unfortunantly, I didn't get a chance to look at many rookie teams last years because I wasn't doing scouting, so I don't know of any last-year's rookies to look for, but I'm sure there will be some big surprises out of them. :) |
i've heard some good things about 173 ;)
|
Hrmm lets see who do you folks have to watch out for umm 222, 145, 303,and perhaps 25. Does the phrase Ramp Riot ring a bell?
|
Team 19 will be very impressive.
|
1189
1189 may have a good outcome as a rookie team, I think we're doin all right so far
|
TechnoKats
I think the TechnoKats will have a good robot.
|
From my years (96-99) I see these teams being a force you wont want to play against...
Aztechs 157 Gale Force 126 The Rhode Warriors 121 The Herd 190 TJ2 88 Hyper 69 Watch out for these teams if they will ally and become an even bigger threat. But again these are teams from my day (when Manchester was the next best thing to Disney and of course they are all from my area. and of course there is the great chief number 47 who are the innovators of new great design every year. |
i'd love to say 810, but meh, i'm not frankly sure we can pull this off :p. we have an interesting, and quite ambitious design, and well, if it works, you'll all see the pictures on Feb. 18th :p.
apart from the obvious teams (45, 47, all the ones that always do good), i'd have to say 237 will probably do good, 173 will make something interesting (only this time i'll hopefully my robot won't break, and i'll be able to beat them :)), and uh, yeah, a bunch of other teams which i can't think off of the top of my head. ask me this in about 4 weeks, maybe i'll be able to tell you more. :p |
Teams that i am gonna look out for this year
Team 121: i good team, gave use a run for our money last year Team 303: when the game requires you drive up on somthing, they will do good (they already do w/o meaning to do it) Team 222: they got atleast one thing going for them : PINEAPPLE Team 365: After the "Big Green Monster" i am still afraid of what moe is gonna come up with Team 71: they seem to be doing somthing right Team 810: built one real power house last year, might wanna watch out for them again this year and last but not least Team 1089: those rookies are really confident, that will either Kill them or they will do good |
Team 311 all the way and 271 also

A few Canucks to watch out for...
Team 188, Woburn Robotics (http://www.team188.com/) Team 610, Cresent School (http://robotics.crescentschool.org/) Team 865, Western Tech (http://warp7.ca/) Team 781, Kincardine (http://www.kineticknights.com/) Team 1114 - GM and Gov Simcoe SS (http://www.simbotics.net/) 1006 - GM and Port Perry HS (http://www.portperryrobotics.ca/) and of course my team... Team 783 - Mobotics (http://www.mobotics.ca) |
am i wrong but arent those allt he canadian teams
|
All the Canadian teams my...uhh, rear end.
There are over 40 Canadian teams this year. |
Harrison stole my list! For the Canadian teams anyway.
|
I think the strong teams last year will all do pretty well...
the 60's, which include 60, 61, 64, 65, 66, 67, 68, and 69 95 had a great ball robot last year, maybe they can stack bins just as fast this year. 111 always have a impressive robot. The 170's were pretty impressive too in the past years, including 173, 175, 177 I personally can't wait to see what 16 & 312, 217, 308 and 469 come up with this year. |
Quote:
Watch out the for us this year...(not to sound cocky) I'd say keep an eye out for 122, 341, 25, 16, 21, and 272.. |
Ending the drought
As long as I have been involved with FIRST (since '98), three of the most dominant teams have been 47, 111, 254. Despite their fantastic robots over the past few years and many regional victories, these three teams have yet to win a national championship. I think that this will be the year that one of them (maybe more, isn't that a scary though?) will break the drought and emerge as the winner of the championship event.

*Cough*Team 180(SPAM)*Cough*
|
I think the "elite" teams from years past will emerge as favorites again this year, but don't be afraid to add 247 to that list, we're comin' up faster than you'll ever realize
|
BIG COMPETOR
Team 2357 is going to be really hot this year. I hear that there robot is already completed, and that they will most likely make it to national, and be a serious contender. I'm looking out for them!:yikes: |
The gm sweep
64, 65, 66, 67, 68 in some combo or maybee even 2 on 2 in the national final
|

|
OK OK OK.... Im going out on a limb here but "I" predict the trio in the winners circle for the finals at the Nationals to be:
237 as they have the expertise in auto driving with a great mechanical team and they will pick...... 759 as they were the dark horse last year who managed to hold their own as the "rookie" team from England against 237 last year and they will pursuade 237 to also pick 388 as they have the largest heart and a most generous nature, they also can build a "mean bot". <<< "So it is said.... So it shall be">>> |
i am expecting team 60, 64, beatty(71), rage(?), and buzz(?) to do well.. like every year.....................
hopefully we will do well... |
Teams other than mine...
Chief Delphi 47 and their partners in crime the Technokats 48. I don't know if their robots were that amazing in terms of performance but as for technological feats they were pretty $@#$@#$@#$@# cool. 121 is/was good last year. 237 was good. More than that i didn't get to see much of. My recollection of team number from the nationals isn't that great and my local regional didn't have any competition smashing bots. This year we should be one though ^_^ |
This thread was started way too early.. It's like selecting which horse will win the Kentucky Derby before seeing the horses themselves- all based on reputation...
|
48 is Delphi E.L.I.T.E., not the Technokats....
unless I'm mistaken? |
Quote:
you are correct... TechnoKats are team 45. expect them to have a good showing this year |
Daisy is right, many teams have done amazing one year then flopped the next. Don't count your chickens before they hatch.
You shouldn't be going by reputation alone, wait until you see some pictures or inventor files before you judge a team. |

![]() Muahaha our plans to overtake the world using a bin launching robot will prevail! ![]() isnt it beautiful? :D :yikes: |
Wow. Don't you think this is kinda silly? We're guessing based on previous challanges how a team will do. I really think this isn't a good idea.
|
We certianly can't guess what teams will WIN, but, you can usually get an idea of what teams are able to build competitive robots year after year.
But hey, predictions are never certain. |
wow i am really suprised that noone has said us this year:( o well...
Bad |

*cough* Excuse Me! , not trying to jinx anyone or ourselves, or to seem cocky, but perhaps you forgot someone???? hmmm.... let's see a few clues...... #1 - YOUR sister team up the road!!!! #2 - we were ALLIANCE CAPTAINS at all 6 competitions our floor team attended.... also, such teams as 175, 25, 71, 47, etc... that have generally had 'robust' machines are just expected to give others trouble year after year... remember, it can't be fair. |
Quick! Everyone say your own team's number!!! :)
I think 639 will win this year!!! Greg |
Its too early to toot our own horns yet so i won't say 360, yet!
But teams I expect to do well this year? 192 254 71 from what I've seen them do to these games in previous years So far we're having fun |
Quote:
On the other hand most of the teams I have seen mentioned have another quality which I feel is equally as important....they help other teams. Wander around the pits at any regional or the nationals and the teams having the most fun, usually are the teams who are helping other teams. Those teams that compete just to win...seldom do. Those teams infected with the FIRST germ always win, even when they lose. Ken Loyd Team 64 PS Never count out the "Bomb Squad" |
Team 497 is going to do very well this year.
-Will Seymour Team 497 2002 GM Industrial Design Award Winner |
I seriously doubt 987 will win, but I know they'll do pretty good, as usual.
I'm giving an honorable mention to the teams that were utter disasters last year... including moe. Perhaps this year we'll see the greatest things come from the worst teams ;) |
Why do people post their own team numbers?
Wow, we're all shocked you think your own team is going to do well. Honestly, who comes out and says "We're planning on sucking this year." Show a little modesty people. One team I feel that hasn't been mentioned is 343. MiM was pointed out to me last year (by Chris of 151). I think they are one of those quality teams that for some reason don't get talked about nearly as much as they deserve. I mean... it almost goes without saying that most of the teams mentioned (45, 47, 111, 254, 60, 67, 68, 71 etc.) will do well. I just can't wait to see how exactly they do it. And Maczealot: Why do you consider MOE a disaster? They tried for the ambitious strategy, and built a robot that could successfully accomplish it. In my humble opinion they are far from a disaster. Props to MOE. |
I always have my favorites 157, 126, 175, 173, and a new one 1100. Wanna see what they come up with.
|
MOE 365 is THE team to watch this year.
|
Quote:
MUWAHAHAHAHA!! Err... I mean... go teams! |
why has no one said 365 we will rule, oh yes we will rule you
|
The term "Putting the cart before the horse" comes to mind when I read this thread.
|
I concur this thread's a bit premature. Maybe after scrimmages or when people have actually produced robots then there might be a better picture but all I see now are people just simply stating robots that did well last year or making a plug for their own team.

Ok here are my teams to watch this year based upon my years in FIRST these teams keep on producing beasts.
16(wanted to draft you guys at Nats) 25 47 the sixties (with all of those ford Motor Companies 71(Three Peat) 95 121(Arch rival) 131 140(Power) 157(Solid) 173 176 190(Always have a sound machine and an excellent coached drive team) 303(We are BR) |
let me tell you why i hate this post...
1 - its not fair to judge teams before you see them....some one might come out and just suprise all of you...but no one will care, because they have their "favorite" teams already 2 - ya some teams may win every year, but what if they are really bad this year.... 3 - past experience with things like this before in other events up in good ol' NH.....don't prejudge... ughhh this makes me sooo mad! |
all i meant was a simple list of your personal favorites, lets not all get into a hissy fit, its not meant to be anything but for fun
Bad |
Dont get all up set and take it personal Bad. She was saying what she thought about the post. She does have the right you know.
|
i didn't mean to post it twice....sorry about that
i'm not getting into a hissy fit...i was just stating my opinion.... some good teams get overlooked...and its not fair because everyone always has "favorites" |
I know i enjoyed all the good coments. There are so many of you that build outsatanding machines . i could never pick a favorite.
well excepted for my own team! good luck to everyone on there designs and final product. |
bads a good guy ... not a bad (joke) guy !
|
personally the teams i think that gotta be watched very closely is
522 - my team the robowizards we have made robots that do not break easily yet we don't seem to place 1st all that much 694 - stuy 47 - delphi - of course they'll do well they like that omin directional drive system alot 175 - buzz 365 - moe 173 - rage 371 - cyberwarriors 375 - the robotics plague personally all NYC (5 Borough) teams will do good |
I say team 564 will get an award because our robot will have a dirt cheap bom and yet (hopefully) be effective. I also think team 666 will burn up the competition.:yikes:

the teams i'm looking forward to are the ones that aren't mentioned here. I'm expecting someone new, or not so famous to come out of the woodwork and kick the pants off of everyone. This isn't a sport, you can base a teams performance on previous years. You can't estimate how many points they'll get by previous matches. You get 25% new people every year, while loosing 25% of your veterains. How can you choose someone as the favorite when you don't know how games will run, how their new people opperate, and how their robot will perform?
:(sorry if i sounded like a butthole..... |
^^^ totally agree!
|
Yea saying who u thinkwill be good, is not so good all the time guys. i mean u havent even see anyones robots and u cant judge a team without seeing there robots. Maybe a last place team from last year will come and suprise you guys so i say u shouldnt judeg any teams till u see them because its just not fair..........you end up counting out teams that were underdogs before but could now be better than you.........i say everyone is a good team and everyone gets a fair chance till the robots are revealed and seen in action!!
|
I wonder how many of these posts are based on past performances of robotic designs, and how many are virtual "shout outs" to friend-teams??
I'm guessing probably 50/50. I personally want to also see how the Gunn Team from California will do this year. I was truly impressed my first year (2001) with their ramp balancing design and would like to see how they do this year. I also had the opportunity to talk to one of the members of Team Gunn at the after party last year, and I want to see if one of his cool ideas for robot design will happen this year. I can't tell you all specifically what it was but it definitely involved teams to co-operate with each other in the design stages. |

This isnt even so much a showing of what are known as -good- teams, but more what teams are best known to the FIRST community. I know so many teams that are excellent, but they are not known because they dont post on CD, they didnt seed well, they havent won regionals, etc. And as much as I want to toot my own horn, im not gonna:D
Cory |
I would like to see some of those rookie teams from last year really get something impressive. Our team was also a rookie team last year, and this year we actually have a nearly completed design, as opposed to last year, where we were just started thinking about what we wanted our robot to do.
I think a lot of rookie teams from last year will actually figure out what they need to do to succeed, and I predict quite a few teams doing well that nobody has ever heard of, even though some may deserve notice (like team 753, who won the Seattle regional last year) Anyway, I predict that there will not be a traditional "powerhouse" on the winning alliance at the championship this year. |
OK here's my faves for this year
151 (they always build strong, tough bots) 190 173 (RAGE!! what else is there to say) I hear 229 has something up their sleeve The titans (358?? i'm not good with numbers, they showed their strength in NYC last year, and i think it will carry over to this season) |
I think this thread is completly fair.
In any annual competition, you have to make a name for yourself. This year is our year. Look out for team 998. We will be the one in the corner with no "snazzy" giveaways or gimics. You will know who we are by our robot. Just cringe when you see us on the other side of the glass....:D

of course there are teams with solid histories.... and i think this thread is good for rookies to get an idea of some of the teams that they need to be sure to scout..... we all know 71 will probably have something insane...... but there will most certainly be some new teams, or underdog teams that will crawl up from the shadows and bite those who did not scout them properly because they were prematurely fixated on another team... so make sure you overlook noone this year
and those of you feeling a little left out because you are not in the spotlight.... trust me sometimes its better when nobody is paying attention to you.... if everyone considers you a threat they will spend an excessive amount of time trying to come up with a way to take you down |
of course 222 and 303
|
My Predictions
we may not have done that well last year, but two years ago we had a great year, so just watch out for 177
237 will probably be a threat too, as they always are and 173 will use the same basic end effector that they have been using for who knows how long (not meant to be taken as an insult, just an observation) |

Observation time,
with a few exceptions, teams have posted that teams are only putting teams in their region of the country... Just pointing out the obvious ;) |
I think I know the reason to that DJ.
At the Nationals it is really hard to get noticed. You essentially get lost in the crowd unless you have a really noticable gimmick. The team's you see the most are obviously the team's at the regional events that you attend, which are more likely than not close to your region. So therefore you have a whole weekend to see how well the teams near you do as opposed to a weekend to see how the other hundreds of teams do at Nationals. Also you have to factor in the mini comp aspect. You tend to see local teams even more at the mini comps as well, so you begin to see patterns in their competitive behavior and see how durable they are as a team. |
As absurd as this thread is I have to include 639. They were tough last year and I can only see them getting better. We’ll see you guys up in Toronto. Good luck!

Or, themselves, If, someone told me to watch out for them, i wouldn't be as worried about teams who brag about themselves |
All the teams that I would have said have been said, except for one.
340 It's hard enough making the elims at nationals 3 years in a row, but they've done it in thier first 3 years of existence. |
Team 254 is going to have an awesome bot this year - with a name "Cheesy Poofs", how is it possible to be not awesome?:]
