What can i do?
 

My "team leader" wants us to enter into the website competition this year. I've re-written the code for my website, but i think i'm truly limited by the resources avaliable to my school system.

I've done pretty much all that i can do.. considering that the school's using some crappy 1.5mb/second SDSL split between 4 schools in our school district and some overloaded BSD box. From what i understand, the only software that the server's got is an old build of Apache.

The current website is www.aragonrobotics.org . What can i do?

You have a couple options.
1. Change your server! Leave a page on your district server that redirects to your new page.

2. Enhance your site as a pure html/css/javascript site. These are all text based languages with wide support. Also, they are browser controlled, so you can use these and experience a very low server load.

3. Images. The other thing that can spice up a page are images. Get your teams animator to spice up your page with cool pictures and things. (There's no one on our team to do that for me... :( )

And please, nobody flame me because I use ASP and not PHP. It's really not as big a deal as some people make it out to be. Both are perfectly valid server side scripting languages, and I really don't want to argue one side or another. Besides, I haven't found anyone giving out free php hosting, otherwise I would quite possibly switch. I'm just cheap.

Yeah, i have my own server running at home that's pumping bandwith out of an aDSL line, it's a Debian (linux) box with php... I haven't learned ASP, but i know it's a micro$oft thing.. i hate micro$oft.

I think ASP is much "cleaner" than PHP. You don't have $ all over the place and it is very easy to understand.

That's just my opinion though ;)

Yes, with PHP there are $'s all over the place. With ASP, you don't have the $'s, because you've given all your $ to MS. :D

But I do have a question. I know with ASP you can use several different kinds of programming languages to execute what you want, but can you do the same with PHP?

Yep

ASP.NET is a lot better system in my opinion. Integrates with many different platforms, and frankly all those ppl who begin their coding experience with C++ will make a super easy transition to C#.

well i mentioned before in my other threads, that mvrt is willing to give some server space. A site can be made really neat just with javascript/css/dhtml/html

MVRT site is purely made of that. The php is just used for backend. Which most sites donot need. Though i would use PHP over asp anyday..

ASP is better, because it's more like Visual Basic, and Visual Basic is the parent of ASP. Microsoft decided to make an internet scripting language (ASP) for their Visual Basic users because they felt left out. That is what Microsoft said on "Why did you create ASP?"

keep in mind that if you want to use A$P that you have to use a micro$oft server.

micro$oft server = unsafe (in most cases) = easy to hack

micro$oft = the root of all evil

I don't see how the fact that ASP is a child of Visual Basic is a valid argument when talking about PHP vs ASP.

i heard ASP has an on session close command which makes it a lot easier to make "you have # users online" which is a little trickier to do in php, even though vbullitin has a nice one :)

in reference to it being a child of vb, i don't think that's a good thing...the conventions vb uses make me want to vomit sometimes (even though i usually use it for windows apps cause i'm too lazy to do it in c++). there's no structure, the variables usually aren't typed right (most people leave them as variable rather than integer or whatever it happens to be), and the syntax is crazy (i mean to do a new line you have to type vbCrLf rather than just \n in php...and to add a variable in a string you have to do "string" & variable & "appendix" rather than "string $variable appendix" like in php)...if you want 13 good reasons to loathe vb/asp, check out last month's issue of dr. dobb's journal under the verity stobb column...

another point in reference to the "making the # of users online" trickier in php...not true. a combination of php and javascript can make it easy to see how many guest users you have...and a boolean field in a database and a sessions variable would make it super easy to see who's logged in.
