Californians!

Well, all you Cali kids out there, the big debate at my school involves the hypothetical that California withdraws from the Union. I was wondering what people (preferably people who don't go to a very liberal school in Venice) think.

We think that for succession to work, California would have to carry oregon, washington, alaska, hawaii, nevada, and arizona to be successful. Actually, popular sentiment around our school is that Bush would be glad to see us go, as it would give him and the republicans a VERY solid grip on the US government.

Interestingly enough, California (though currently in an economic slump) is rated as the 5th largest economy in the world, if it were a country, just above france.

If france can be a country, why can't we?!?

GILLIGAN!!!!!!! 13-01-2003 21:19

Leave the union, less welfare stress on the rest of us, you lazy bums! lol, but seriously, how long do you think you would last. The US would ban trade with you, and i doubt many countries would trade with you. We would probably launch a war to take you back, its a pointless endeavor, unless all of the FIRST states succeed, then we could form the United FIRST Nation of Engineering. That would rock!

Um the U.S. pacific fleet is stationed in Califorinia along with a vital number of military bases supporting Pacific operations (assuming they haven't been emptied of personnel thanks to this whole Iraq issue)....war, very long and bloody. Only Texas may succeed from the union, its intheir state constitution I believe.

As a Californian, I say yes. Has anyone has read Heinlein's Friday ?

Wetzel 14-01-2003 07:33

Heh.

Here in Northern Virginia we want to form our own state separate from the rest of Virginia.

Nope.
With a Democratically-controlled government, we need a federal govt. to keep the state in check.
SEE: Davis is a moron, budget crisis

Cory 16-01-2003 00:38

Everyone knows Cali is the best state, so obviously noone would let us go.

I moved to Arizona in 1994 and bought beach front property.

California does not need to leave the union. Just wait for the "big one" and you will be your own island nation.

Long live swaying palms and "uke" music.

California cannot even provide itself with enough water fit for consumption without mooching off every neighboring state.

/me makes a joke about Lake Erie.

I... don't know what to say on this issue. There're pros and cons... oh, nevermind...

SECEDE!!

Kristina 18-01-2003 16:32

How about splitting the state into Northern and Southern California? I vote for that...then the evilness of the northern lingo won't infiltrate down here :)

Cory 19-01-2003 04:01

Well, in my ongoing struggle to get kristina to come to terms with the fact that us Nor caler's will continue to say "Hella" no mater what, I realized that we really do talk different than everyone else, even other californians. Anyone know why this is?

In one of No Doubt's songs, Gwen says "We're feeling hella good"
Is she from NorCal?

Actually, I meant it as more of a rhetorical question to prove that our speech mannerisms do extend to our southern neighbers.

/me seconds

And speaking of lingo, the "Valley" dialect still has some influence all across the nation, even though it's generally dead, even in the Valley.

Kristina 19-01-2003 18:19

I don't know, I live in the valley north of "the valley" and I know a lot of people who still talk like that. I know that I say "like" far too much and whenever I go to conferences type things around the country they point it out. I can slip into it if I really want, such as in Tigerbolt just to annoy the northern california people.

Oh, and on a sidenote: Hella Good is the worst song ever! I've said it many times and I'll say it again, I'll scream and change the song everytime it comes on the radio and I even ran off of the dancefloor at prom. Oh, how I hate that song.

Sean_330 20-01-2003 13:23

Why don't we split the state at Bakersfield and give anything north of Bakersfield to Oregon?

D.J. Fluck 20-01-2003 13:50

Heh, If California broke away from the U.S. with President Warhawk in office, he would wait a day and send troops in and overtake California again. Then it would be run by the U.S., Puerto Rico would become the 50th State and life would be ok again ;)

<edit> So basically, California would be back in the Union, W/O representation in Congress and still have to pay tax up the wazoo, so I think California would be better of staying ;) </edit>

EddieMcD 20-01-2003 14:04

Hey, if Dean Kamen can successfully secede from the United States of America, then California can too.

mgreenley 20-01-2003 18:08

huh?

/me=newbie=more confusedness.

please do tell.

Cory 20-01-2003 18:45

Dean Kamen owns an island somewhere in the atlantic? (I don't remember where) that he has his own little governing system on. I dont know too much about this...

Sean_330 20-01-2003 19:07

Maybe Dean should run CA!

EmilyM 20-01-2003 19:30

I'd love to secede, the only problem is that we should take New York with us, and there's so much space between us.. Actually, at HW we like to say that the only reason the US includes the Midwest at all is connect CA and NY. =)
(To be taken with a grain of salt. ;) )
