Ok, my team has an incomplete website, www.raptar.org, but we need more space on our webserver to do video. I also want to put a forum up. We don't want to pay hundreds for a larger server and vBulletin.

Should we just put Apache on one of our computers? Should we get phpBB? If we do get phpBB, then how do we install it on the server?

We need some help.

What are you running right now? I don't think that apache is necessary to run phPBB, but you do need mysql. And as for installing it -- its pretty easy, just follow the README and installation scripts. The hardest part will be setting up mysql if you don't have it up already.

Well, we need a new server for video, and we might put a webserver on a PC with broadband.

If you don't want to pay for hosting, set it up on a deticated system in your school. Just find an ok system, and install Apache, MySQL, and PHP on it.. then get phpBB uploaded and install it.

I have a ME box at home I can put it on. The problem is I can't get PHP to work with PWS.

just a quick comment, the header up top seems to be a BMP...

i hope it isn't supposed to be like that. :-P

What sort of problem are you having with PWS? Is it installed properly? Have you set the proper folder to be shared?

Here's another vote for OpenBB.

As far as hosting it, you might want to check with your ISP to see if you can. I doubt they'd care with a low-volume show though.

I have setup a remote-based (I hope it is the right term) MB.

It is still in the works, and I will have the URL posted when ready.

Use Apache, not PWS.

Here are my settings:

Apache 1.3.23
PHP 4.1.2
MySQL 3.23.51

With Windows XP.

Most forum software distros tend to be fairly idiot proof. (For me that meant I had to read some instructions, but it could have been worse)

So generally speaking, the hardest part would seem to be setting up PHP/MySQL (as it seems to be the defacto standard for most forum scripts/whatever)

So I would sincerely suggest Apache like everyone else has been saying, but if its on a personal computer, that could keep you from being able to use your own computer...:eek:

get the phpTriad for windows...it's apache + php + mysql. all pre-configured and everything.

easy stuff...it's not what we use, but if you're stuck with windows i guess it's better than nothing. :)

If your school will allow you to use their bandwidth, use it.
If it's only for videos, don't bother with apache. Download the DARWIN STREAMING SERVER from www.apple.com. You can use quicktime pro (30 dollars) to encode any of your videos into mpeg-4 format.
The great thing about mpeg-4 is that you can encode dvd-quality video at 96 kbps. DSS (available free for download and ported to many operating systems at www.apple.com/darwin)It's what you see on all the really professional video dealing websites today. Check out apple.com and the switch ads online. Notice how fast they load and how clear they are? That's all done off the Darwin Streaming Server.
You can also download the free Quicktime Broadcaster and broadcast realtime streaming video from any webcam or DV camera that is currently hooked up to your machine.
It won't work easily with apache because it wants to use Port 80 as well, and thus inhibits Apache. You'll have to find a different port, but it's just as simple to dedicate a single apache server to your messageboard, and probably better for your bandwidth as well. You can probably pick up a computer at an antique shop that would run NetBSD, Apache, mysql 3.23 and php4.

I'm running a ring of websites (www.peteyproductions.net and it's growing family) off a 400 MHz Macintosh running OSX 10.2. It's the best operating system in the world because it has the beautiful, easy to use OSX GUI and a solid Darwin Core, built off a Free BSD 4.4 kernel. I run Apache 1.3.6, MySQL 4 (the gamma version), PHP, Perl, and am in the process of installing a Postfix mail server.
It's great, hosting your own sites. It can be a pain, and it'll take months to work out the bugs, but it's definitely worth it.

All you're gonna need to spend is what you're gonna need for the two computers, and I bet your school would provide two old ones for free. You can run Darwin--the Mac OSX BSD kernel--on any G3 mac OR just about any PC. Apple, in a pretty surprising but commendable move, ported their core OS to x86 machines. It's got a nice interface.
If you go with such an old machine that you can't run Darwin on it, NetBSD (www.netbsd.org) will run on ANYTHING, but you'll have to port DSS seperately.
You can run a messageboard on virtually anything, and www.invisionboard.com will give you a great messageboard for free. mySQL, PHP, and Apache are all free. You could do this without paying a dime.

anyway, i don't really like macs. too much graphic wuving. I much rather prefer a simple icon that takes up minimal space than a pretty one that sits there dancing and otherwise distracts me.
