Southern California Regional

im hearing lots of talk about teams going to the San jose and the Sacramento Regional.... but wut about the good old LA regional 702 will be there and we may even bring our robot for good luck...lol

but seriously whose going?

and i know no one wants to give there robot away but say wut team you are and wut your robot brings to the party so everyone attending gets a feel for wut ahead:yikes:

SpaceOsc 21-01-2003 12:42

702 the Bagel Bytes

We a Moving wall bot.... more features on the way:D

We extend to get more boxes

now people dont be shy say yours bot type to help us all out

Don Knight 21-01-2003 14:04

Our robot type not listed

Our robot may be a little different than the robots being mentioned in the way it interacts with the containers.

It's more of a directed energy robot, it can knock over the wall from any position on the field. It can also clear the opponents stacks and containers from their scoring area while being located on top of the platform.

Not sure if this belongs here or in the Rumor Mill:confused:

Teedoff101 22-01-2003 01:19

We are gonna be there. When we have a clear idea about what kind of bot we r building (dependent on the type we choose we have all the designs in place) we will give clues about it. SoCal is gonna be a good regional this year. A lot of new teams in the SoCal area. At kickoff there were over 10 teams that got their kit after us (and we are team 992). Should be fun, and bring bagels and any other food to the regional so the pit people dont starve like last year.

SpaceOsc 22-01-2003 02:54

ummm i c

well maybe it does belong in the rumor mill but this is supposed to be facts about robots in the regional

lol im curious about this directed energy bot of ours wut do you mean? wut does it do exactly?

im sure you were cryptic for a reason but the comment you said puts fear in the hearts of many

you guys have a rep to live up to and im sure you wont disapoint

Sean_330 22-01-2003 03:14

With 60 and 64 both being there, LA is gonna be such a great competetion.

SpaceOsc 22-01-2003 03:40

702 Waits for the greats

lol your telling me 64 says they got a weird energy directed device to knock over boxes form anywhere on the field

no word on 60

if 60 looking gives us a sign of wut your doing....lol im sure its big great and strong

Don Knight 22-01-2003 08:52

Rumor Mill?

Still trying to dial in our system, but here is another hint: every team has this material available to them. They just need to figure out how to harness/direct it toward the containers. Moving and directing it in a volume and velocity necessary is the key.;)

:yikes:

Don,
You took an oath of secrecy! The members of team 64 would like to let the world know that Don Knight has been standing in the sun too long.

If we have a directed energy force, and if other teams are able to discover the directed energy force, Don may find himself walking back to Phoenix!

At least Don did not mention the energy source necessary to produce the necessary velocity and volume.

Ken Loyd
Team 64  :yikes:

SpaceOsc 22-01-2003 12:16

Umm secrecy indeed

lol let me guess here, harness the force?

how about surguical tubing?

or harnessing the ultimate power of Velcro... lol :p

ummm springs?

a large bag of bagels hanging like a Demo Ball?

A complex system of pullies?

dead weight?

blending plastic or metal?

stop me when i get it

assuming the secret can be out a lil before competetions:) :p

Don Knight 22-01-2003 12:44

May the "Force" be with Us

Not even close - lets just say that when the force is generated so is a lot of noise. Earplugs will become standard equipment with our team members along with the safety glasses.

Again we're still in the testing stages and don't know if the force generator will make it on the final robot.

Ken, don't worry they will never guess - :yikes:

Ken, don't worry they will never guess - :yikes: [/b][/quote]

Don,

I have more fear of the other teams in FIRST than you do. I know that if we can come up with FAP, others will also come up with what may be improved FAP.

Please be very cafeful what secrets you let out.

SpaceOsc 23-01-2003 12:06

Sound?

One of my team memebers suggested sound to be your energy directed device

lol which leads me to ask

do you have direct contact with the boxes to make your device work ?

Don Knight 23-01-2003 15:29

You're getting warmer, but still no cigar.....

The force placed on the containers is what causes them to move/fall over, but the robot does not have to be in physical contact with the containers.

But noise is a by-product generated by the device when it is operating.

SpaceOsc 23-01-2003 16:49

Maybe

Air?

umm is that allowed?

F.A.P (Forward Air Propulsion):yikes:

George 23-01-2003 16:54

Team 60

We are still Working at the "Robotics Barn" 6+ HR a Day,7 Days
a week..........4 to GO........
We are playing King of the hill,
Looking forward to Phoenix & L.A
See ya all at Chatsworth??
Good luck!
Geo.

P.S. we are also working on Invisibility

Never happen, George.

You folks are too good and too respected to ever become invisible.

Two years ago there was a rumor that some of the Kingman brain trust could walk on water. I hate to break it to you, but...you folks are just too nice to be anything but human

Looking forward to getting together in Phoenix in March.

Ken Loyd
Team 64:cool:

PS You should know that Don Knight once sold ice cube trays to eskimos.

SpaceOsc 24-01-2003 01:18

Indeed

Its gonna be great seen both of you teams at chatsworth and at the LA Regional

LOL no one told me if the Air idea was the right one... hope your not avoiding answering it:yikes: lol J/K

You don't need to say wut your robot can do but in the spirit of first sharing part of the game

F.A.P (forward air propulsion)? lol i wonder

Don Knight 24-01-2003 08:44

Moving Forces

Those containers will look like trailer houses in a tornado.... if this all gets working .... having some difficulties with the thrust vectoring system and spool up time.

Hope folks don't mind getting their hair mussed up.

:( Sorry, 64 will not be at Chatsworth this year.

Please remember that the following words also begin with 'F':
foolhearty, fiasco, faint, fibber, FREQUENCY.

Team 64 :yikes:

PS Don, be careful what you say!

George 25-01-2003 12:04

Never Happen

A=bc/2
Geo.
PS I herd it was Ice to go WITH the trays.

HolyMasamune 25-01-2003 23:47

Maybe your poll should include other choices, like stacker+king of the hill, etc because I'm sure most robots have more than one function. And weird is spelled w-e-i-r-d, not werid or however u spelled it on the poll :)

SpaceOsc 26-01-2003 03:40

lol weird

yes i know but i didnt think anyone would mind enough to write a reply to call me on it obliviously you did though lol oh well
:)
and i didnt put any combos cuz i saw other polls to be unspecific in that manner .. they posted an option "combinations" and 60 percent went to the combo section but that told no one anything
so i just placed specific sections with no option to place a very vague response

if your robot as different things then vote more then once and put everything you got there.

Don Knight 27-01-2003 11:08

Air

What a wonderful idea - Air

Still working on thrust vectoring and Scatter Shield for the fan blades with gearing and drill motors tips of blades go supersonic (hense the need for earplugs);)

3000+CFM & 150-175+MPH will muss your hair :ahh:

If we get the vectoring working will regear to get 200MPH+

With both nozzles we may even be able to blow other robots off the platform if they have fixed flat sides.

SpaceOsc 27-01-2003 12:17

WOw

well is that your robots "secret Weapon".... i must say I'm not surprised nor impress lol i expect as much or even more from your quite glorious team. keep rising the bar for all

is it air or not .... since it was earlier it said was that it wasn't air... but now it sound like it is and its done and already bringing down boxes every which way.....

if it is air you dont mind if my team makes something specifically made to dampen you out

lol thats more of a joke but knowing theres gonna be a robot that can beat and even disable everything on the field leaves me uneasy..... i already thought of a way to stop your "air cannon" the prob is we would follow you around or at lease be in the general area then we would kinda stop you from even seeing your robot and blocking all its emissions.....

umm lots of work but it wouldnt be all the hard connecting it to our large moving wall... we are a wall and very stable we kinda just need to face you.... but not actually be all the way solid and and if need always flip your robot every which way so you dont get clear shots....

just thinking..... dont fear us were just the bagel bytes we haven't made a name for ourselves yet... but 2003 might be the charm

so bottom line

air or not don?

-Oscar-:]

Don Knight 27-01-2003 19:53

To air is Human, to Forgive Devine

I truely wouldn't want to get close to the business end of the thrust ducts. Getting in from of them would put your robot in a dangerous position, depending on weight and surface area "Your Bot" could go bounding across the field like the containers. :ahh:

Still having some really vectoring challenges, with that much air at those velocities it take some pretty good forces to redirect the nozzles.

May end up having to scrap the idea for something simplier. like an negatively charged ion cannon. Using the negative charge the containers create when they interact with the carpet and a Tesla Coil Ion Cannon:yikes: but have had some problem there too....

Don,

You have gone too far this time. We are recalling your decoder ring. By the way, Telsa called and he wants more royalties. Sorry Don, we had to cancel you limo service in Houston to pay Telsa. If you find it necessary to spill any more of our beans, we may be forced to borrow chickens and red suspenders from Dave Lavery.

Ken Loyd
Team 64

SpaceOsc 28-01-2003 12:45

lol

Dont worry don only bringin fear to those who had none

lol as for our robot i guess it will all dpend on our drive drain cuz there no way your bring us down with air

we have 4 main sides but dozens of surfaces that are to small collectably to have any surface area to push on.... if we stand in a certain way in front of you we can redirect your wind lol with our Bagel Wall of doom which is not really a wall but more of a net in many ways ummm if we add some PVC then we can do some of that redirecting.... for now im thinking our robot will be modulating per around anyways so no need to worry

Thanks don

wut are you guy using for your drive?

im sure a whole fan on your bot must make it harder to move around well

-Oscar-

Don Knight 28-01-2003 13:41

Drive

Not sure which motors they've decided to use for the drive system. Had to re-orient the intake, kept sucking up stuff on the carpet and sometimes the carpet itself. Again at full throttle the problem won't be moving it will be keeping from moving.

Robot is actually getting some gyro stabilization from the spinning mass of the turbine type blade system.

I think most teams will be "Blown Away" if we get everything working the way I'd like it to.

The Tesla Coil group ran into some difficulties, it discharged too soon arching over to Gila IV frying the controller - oops guess we can't use the negative charge ion cannon idea.

So most likely it's just a bunch of hot air...

George 28-01-2003 15:18

Don:
I was thinking you were blowing "Hot Air" with the tesla coil
Bit, ..then the cat reminded me this was posable to do in AZ,
Static Charge (ZZaped the poor thing 6 ft )
we are bringing dryer sheets to counter this
Geo.

SpaceOsc 28-01-2003 15:48

"ummm how about one of them gyros"

gyro stabilizer ..... ummm i c

cuz if you do have a fan and you must stay still and it becomes a problem with moving

if my team wanted to stick it to you all we would need to do is move you or lift you just a bit

the force of your blades would send you out of control even maybe flip you on to your side or something

lol ride a bike and let a someone come at your front wheel from the side and you be thrown way up into the air

i saw it once on a weird videos showa guy a motor cycle and the edge of a train ... very sad:(

just food for thought... even if you are the competetion haha i feel i should point out thing you might wanna address if we do meet on the field

Team 702 will have to beat you the hard way lol j/k:p

Sean_330 28-01-2003 15:50

/me begins to think it will be easy to see who will win the LA regional.....

SpaceOsc 28-01-2003 15:57

ummm Winners

oh and who is the winner of the LA regional lol

you three won it last year id like to think we got a shot too

330 wacha got in your game plan wut kinda bot?:D

Sean_330 28-01-2003 16:33

lol, actually i was talking about 64 and 60 and 702 this year not 330.

Well thanks for the compliment, you know you're in great company whenever your team gets mentioned with Team 60.

Hope that all the other teams don't go gunning for us...

Dryer Sheets, darn, never thought of those....

Looking forward to seeing you all in PHX, LA and Houston

SpaceOsc 28-01-2003 23:10

the triple threat

uumm 60 64 702 lol sounds cool

lets just see if it ends that way..:)

lol but id still wanna know wut 330 is bringing to the table

you know 64 and 60 got something special going on ... but 330 is one of those great mysterious teams ya know

Ahhhhhh /me cries. :( Sean!!!! Where is your confidence? lol (for those who don't know I am Sean's sister so I can give him a hard time! :yikes: )

If anyone wants to see our bot a picture is on the website. http://beachbot.tripod.com
Actually that is not the best picture of it because we have these weird thingies on the front that are for stability (you can only see them a little.) Also Sean didn't tell you guys about his other team, 1197. They just have a little really fast robot that actually is pretty good (they won the Chatsworth Scrimmage!!!). They are gonna be at the regional.

One more question: If 330 organized a little team social thing at the Santa Monica Promenade like last year would your team come?

Courtneyteam330 21-02-2003 18:06

Oh ya one other thing that you can't see from the picture in we CAN go under the bar because the light moves down when we deploy the wedges and the put down the lift!!!!!!!
