This will be my first year on anything. It's gonna be sweet. Is it gonna be this year's thing, or we still doing the ball/basket thing like last year? Good luck everyone by the way.

CLAP::CLAP::::::CLAP::CLAP::CLAP::::::CLAP::CLAP:: CLAP::CLAP::::::GO MOE!

Moe will be in the flesh...errr... metal at Philly. This is my first year on my team, and I am really excited about going. Can anyone tell me what to expect out of the ordinary, other than things seen at last year's off-season competitions.

I can't wait to see all of you guys at the Philadelphia Alliance Regional.

Dave_222 18-02-2003 12:37

Hey 222 will be there and we have been running with this years robot for about 2 weeks now and will be ready for this years challenge. we hope to see you all there and hope to have some tuff matches against some tuff robots.

Raven_Writer 18-02-2003 15:59

We are still going if there's not a big freakin snowstorm that traps us into our city....krap!

157#1Driver 18-02-2003 23:36

Sorry to annouce but last years Philly regional champs with not be attending Philly this year. We are very sad, we could not get the funding to go but would have had fun just as last year. Team 157 would like to say good luck to all teams attending this year.

Yup... hopefully I'll be walking around Philly with my team, but here's my problem. I'm a poor college student who can't afford to miss my wednesday and thursday classes to go down with my team early. I decided that I could take a train down at a later time... but that's $80 for a one way trip... and I surely don't want to throw in an additional $100 for a hotel room. Now, this might be a long-shot favor to ask of any of you... but would it be possible for any of you to find a floor for me to sleep on friday night?

haha... can't hurt to ask. It's the money issue that is making debate over going or not.

Thanks,

ByE

I thought ALL noise makers were banned?

Dan-o 25-03-2003 19:03

not really...

Only noise makers such as air horns, and those that damage the arena in any way have been banned.

ZACH P. 26-03-2003 22:55

Whoa! the regional is mere hours away, and you know im gonna be there right away at 8. im bored, so now your gonna have to read my little amusing anecdote. I was walking towards Drexel to check things out since i live in Philadelphia, and the wind was blowing really strongly, and there was a lot of loose dirt and particulate matter flying around and getting in my eyes. So what do i do? Thats right, i whip out my safety googles, and bam! instand protection. The things FIRST teaches you:D . Oh yeah, stop by 321's pit to say hi, ill be the one wearing the safety googles:p

cbudrecki 26-03-2003 23:14

hey, like my team(222) always says... "SAFETY GLASSES SAVE LIVES!!!"

The Lucas 26-03-2003 23:28

Ready to Roll

I just got back form the Volunteer's dinner and Drexel is ready for tomorrow's robot invasion. Just try and contain yourselves until the doors open (I'll let the crowd control people handle that). I look forward to inspecting all the great bots u made. I'll be the inspector with the green hair. See ya tomorrow!

purplehaze357 27-03-2003 02:17

i cant wait....there is officialy 3 hours till i need to be up and 4 until i leave my house 5 until i leave for Drexel

Along with that, I watched a presentation there (tonight) on liquid nitrogen. They froze a rubber (I think it was rubber) ball in the liquid nitrogen and dropped it. That does not bounce, it shatters.

How hot a regional can be.. whew.. Drexel has been pretty hot in the past, but today was just brutal

Oh yeah- I also learned that Drexel still has the best team party.. Cheesesteaks, tastykakes, all the good philly foods! only scrapple was left out..

I was there, and i think that FIRST should allow the teams use Liquid Nitrogen on the robot to cool the drive motors during the matches while on the field.

EmTFGirl 27-03-2003 22:36

I learned that there is enough time to do TWO leaps off the field, not just one, after doing the cool human player thing. Yeah not having a robot to run practice rounds! I also made friends on team 357, h-hey!

Dan-o 27-03-2003 22:43

yeah... after you ditched your team... jk. Great job Emily.

Joe3 27-03-2003 23:08

BTW...did anyone notice any typical element of a MOE-attended regional missing today?

The Lucas 28-03-2003 01:34

We passed out earplugs all day today but for what? I am losing my voice, so "Go MOE!" is getting progressively harder to shout. I need something to relieve my throat and appeal to my eardrum's upper noise threshold. What could solve this problem?

OneAngryDaisy 28-03-2003 20:53

What have I learned?

I've learned that this year's drill motor gearboxes are absolutely horrible. We've broken three of them thusfar, and numerous other teams have had problems with high current voltage, etc..

We finally tipped over- and learned our arm is strong enough to self-right our robot.. Whew..

How about all that cheering and dancing right before the awards ceremony- anyone ever see that many people cheering at once?

purplehaze357 28-03-2003 23:12

when you come to philly...we know how to cheer...(then again our fans also throw things at the referees in the traditional sporting arenas....hmm i hope that doesnt happen)

Tpypically Philly, as ive noticed has amazing cheering/dancing demonstartions.

OZ_341 29-03-2003 04:44

Philly Fans

Time to leave for the final day and scrap it out for a play-off spot.

The Philly Regional is my favorite event !

For Team 341 it is the focal point of the year!! (Better than Nats)

Best Crowd! Most intense action! Best team social!

Why is it so great? PEOPLE!!

People like Mr. PurpleHaze always make this event a blast!

EmTFGirl 29-03-2003 18:04

Well, it's over. I think today had the highest temp yet, WAY too hot in there. Great job to everyone and to our alliance partners ~> Miss Daisy & the RoboWizards!

OneAngryDaisy 29-03-2003 20:50

Whew.. Just had my first real meal in 3 days..

I have some thanks and props to give to all the teams out there-

First- Thanks to our alliance partners- 365 and 522. We just had some bad luck-

To 1218- You guys are amazing! Winning a regional in your rookie year and dominating the way you did.. Hopefully you can scrounge up the money to make it to Houston

272- Even though your drivetrain was pretty messed up, you pulled it off.. Congrats on making the finals- thanks for cheering us on all weekend

357- Thanks so much for helping us out at the end of the day- It was also amazing to see the improvement in your bot.. I'll never forget how you just had a blank frame on thursday, and today had a pretty darn cool crab system running around..

Overall, it was awesome.. Can't wait for Houston!

[edit] Just remembered that the # 1,2,3, and 4 seeds were upset by 5,6,7,and 8.. Anyone ever see that before? [/edit]

Jared Russell 29-03-2003 21:30

Yes, much thanks to 365 and 522 in the finals - unfortunately the rules prevented us from replacing a somewhat-damaged robot in between rounds. Oh well, we fought the good fight (and I got to make a green loin-cloth :yikes: ) .

This has been our most successful event ever. Our robot worked flawlessly in autonomous mode (provided yours truly selected the right program...hey, 1 out of 9+ ain't bad). Once we figured out our drive, we were doing great out there...it was beautiful.

We recieved the Leadership in Control award for our utilization of the gyrochip and other electronic/programming features. And of course we recieved the Regional Chairman's Award.

Sorry for tooting my horn, but this is the first time we've ever achieved success of this level and needless to say we are proud.

Thanks:

365 and 522 for being fantastic alliance partners

651 - I spent quite a bit of time working with you guys, and I was cheering for you every step of the way. You pulled together and deserved that Engineering Award (you didn't do too shabby in the finals, either!).

321 - I briefly worked with you guys on auton programming, and getting your bot back up. With our pit next to yours, it was great to see people from all around come together to get your bot working. In the end, you guys ended up doing pretty well!

1218 - You guys deserved that Rookie of the Year award. I corresponded with a mentor about using the gyro, and I was glad to see you guys working it out as the competition progressed. And in the end - you won!

357 - Pit-mates again. Thanks for everything...tools, advice, and letting us watch your robot as it grew.

272 - Thanks for the advice, and congrats on finals!

I can't think of anyone else off the top of my head, but there were countless others who I am surely forgetting! Thanks!

Dave_222 29-03-2003 21:43

Oh my god!!!! Philly was awesome our machine was flawless *ack (wrong auton modes) ack* winning the Motorola's quality award was amazing prolly the best feeling i have ever had being as i was the pit crew foreman and helped build and design a lot of the parts for the robot. congrats to team 230 for beating us in the spirit award if they beat us they seriously deserved it. Thank you to team 87 for picking us and thank you to team 272 for being so awesome. Way to go to my rookies 1143 for winning rookie all star. there are just too many people to thank and congratulate so i am going to let it drop at that. See you all in Rutgers and the PARC.

Ne one who wishes to get hold of me i am on AIM at halo the unknown and yahoo at Spiral_Bliss

team222badbrad 29-03-2003 21:46

YEAH

I would like to thank team 87 for picking us to be your partner and I would like to thank team 272 for helping us the whole way! GO ALLIANCE!!!!!!

GO TEAM

The only thing I didnt like about the regional was that it was cooking hot in the pits and stands. The other thing I didnt like too well was the (safety glasses security guards) that just horrible....

Mascott222 29-03-2003 21:54

Hey i'll have to agree with dave and Brad on this one. And thanks to all my mascott brothers and sisters out there for making today one h$!! of a great time.

Also thanks to 87 and 272 for the great teamwork we all showed today. and see you all at rutgers and hopefully after that to HUSTON.

Dave_222 29-03-2003 21:55

222 GOES TO HOUSTON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

edomus 29-03-2003 21:56

Just wana thank our mentors and alliances. WE WON!

cbudrecki 29-03-2003 21:58

HEY! Great job to all the teams @ Philly!!! What can I say! We've got a great bot this year!!! Hey, 3rd @ Phoenix, 2nd @ Philly, hmmm, what could be next?!?! Well, we can only hope for the obvious answer. RUTGERS HERE WE COME!!!!!! AND LOOK OUT HOUSTON!!!!!

MissDaisyGirl 29-03-2003 22:03

Yay Philly

I believe that my other team members have thanked and congratulated all the teams but here is my two cents:

87 & 103: thank you to your mentors for coming over to our pits and trying to offer suggestions and assistance for our drive system problems, we appreciate it!

1218: sorry we couldn't be w/u in an alliance (in hindsight: darnit! hehe) but a huge CONGRATULATIONS to you guys. you were awesome! and best of all, you are a nice team, a great combo, and as stated earlier, we hope that we see you in Houston.

357: i love being pit neighbors with you guys, thanks for all of your support

Thank you 365 and 522 for being partnered with us and for your huge efforts and strategizing.

Amazing round: when 316 flipped over but then flipped ALL the way over to be right side up, in a word: awesome.

To my team: great programming! awesome pit crew! great stategizing! great scouting! great video! and thanks to all of you who supported those of us who were concentrating on Chairmans, all I can say, whew....and why can't i sleep w/that trophy tonite dagnabit?

:: Miss Daisy ::
:D (the extremely happy one when we won Chairmans) :D

WOW.....how much more amazing do you think one regional could be....

I would like to thank a few teams/people for their continued support....making my senior year and last regional as a student the best possible....

Team 341:You guys are AWESOME pit partners...we always feel like a family with you guys around and appreciate everything all of you do for us...Congrats on the Chairmans....You deserve every bit of it....
Carol Kauffman: You're amazing thank u for everything....
Jim Moore: I mean what can i say....where would this regional be without you...
Jeff: Awesome MC....you made it fun..thanks
Al Ostrow, Dina Campagna, and Jimmy Hayne- What can i say...amazing people..."Brothers dont shake hands, brothers gotta hug!!"

And Of course....
Jules Scogna- Our Industrial Design Engineer from Synthees....its been an amazing tournament...and you're time with us and me has taught me more than i would have playing baseball...
Ken Wilson- Our Lead Engineer, Mechanical Engineer from PECO....It's your dedication and you passion for FIRST and for the improvement of the students that keeps us going....
Chris Gerlach- On and off the field your enthusiasm and passion make everything worth it....
Mr. Ken Delaney- math teacher and lead programmer....we have been through it all together...the ups the downs...and the in betweens and through it all we you're always there to support me...thank u for not giving up...
Mr. David Peterkin- You keep me sane....enough said....and you've taught me everything...
My Dad- thank u for being crazy enough to get involved when Mrs Kaufman asked you to...i don't know where id be without FIRST

This was quite possibly the best regional Ive attended in 4 years and I'm glad to have been apart of for so long....the spirit...comradery...

its the only event Ive ever been to where we lose matches with 6 points...and teams crowd around our pit to look at our robot...and ask if there is anything they can do to help...teams that were involved or not...that is what FIRST is all about...not the winning and the losing...but the co-operation....thats the definition....thank u

Ya the lead on the Fisher Price that holds our stacker together ripped off. I hate putting 10 gauge leads on such small motors ( well that is fixed now). Too bad we couldn't sub your bot for ours cause you would have won it with the RoboWizards. Oh well, Bots will break and not everything is a 5 min fix.

It was a very spirited event. We gave away thousands of earplugs (all we brought). They were needed around the noisemaker bleacher containing: WAR Dept, RobbeXtreme, and of course MOE with spirit sticks. Also T Rex had drums in the same spot.

We also had the greatest Pit Neighbors.
As always, Royal Assault built a beautiful bot that I couldnt stop talking about.
The Brazilian Pioneers were a lot of fun. I wish I wasnt working in the pit during the soccer game between our two teams.
The Thunder Herd was the first bot i got to inspect. Thanks for not being too tough on a rookie inspector.
Thank you to the Arial Tornados for the Sponge Bob doll. You had the prettiest bot there.
The MechTechs were fun to watch as they did a major overhaul to their bot. Usually i dont like to see a bot remove its stacker but it had to be done. I like the low friction plastic pieces u used instead of casters.

Thanks to all the teams for making it a great regional. See many of u in Houston.

Bill Moore 29-03-2003 23:33

Congrats to all Philly Teams

This was the fourth Philly Regional I have attended, and by far it was the most competetive. I have never attended any regional (7 total) where the final eight alliances were so strong and so evenly matched. The top 4 alliances were eliminated by the bottom 4, yet the quality of gameplay never diminished. There were no weaknesses in any of these alliances, and all teams in the playoffs deserve a loud CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

It's interesting to see how all the local teams in this regional are improving and developing together. These past few years as we've met at one or two regionals, and also at the many off-season competitions in this area, a very strong core of good teams have developed, and it showed these past three days.

Here's looking forward to Nationals. Good Luck to all the teams making the trip, and look for more excitement as we "Stack Attack" during the upcoming off-season.

DaveO'B365 29-03-2003 23:59

congrats all, i watched the webcast, or at least of a lot of it, from PSU main campus, and i must say you guys looked hot, i was impressed, and even though i wasn't there, i could feel the graciousness radiating from the arena... well, maybe i'm lying, but i could definitely feel the excitement, great job guys

Luckily that didn't happen. I have been to plenty of Phillies games where the fans throw Batteries (more readily available at robotics competitions) at refs or opposing players. I am sure no one wanted to see Ogre hit upside the head with a 13.5 lb lead acid battery. See that is what Gracious Professionalism is all about: Not maiming officials.

This post doesn't apply to Philly.....

I was reading this post and you guys have all mentioned that you are having problems with your drill motors falling apart. You guys aren't the only ones with this problem and the only soultion that Delphi ELITE has come up with it to rebuild the drill motors. Yes, you guys all love taking things apart so what are ya'll waiting for. I don't know exactly what they took out and put back in but I can find out if you would like to know?!? I'm glad that there was so much excitment in Philly, just sad I missed it being in Canada all weekend!!

Jared Russell 30-03-2003 13:00

Indeed, that happened to us.

We eventually welded several parts of the gearbox together, and reworked the motor mounts. Now we have no problems whatsoever (before the whole motor would rotate, spitting out chunks of plastic and metal!).

Our drills never fall apart. come to think of it i havent had ne problems with them what so ever. If you guys are talking about the brushes al we did was put a plastic zip tie aroung the back of the motors.

The other thing I didnt like too well was the (safety glasses security guards) that just horrible.... [/b]
--------------------------
I hope that I don't hear anything else about the safety glasses issue because it is so simple it is stupid. You wear them when working in machine shops at your schools or businesses, when using tools, and when you are buiding the robot durring the build period... why wouldn't you wear then when working on the robot at a competition? Even if you are not working on YOUR robot... the people near you are.

Heck... FIRST has a seperate heading in the manual about it. "12.1 Safety Glasses - They do no good on foreheads."

also... under "16.10 Courtesies and Rules" it most definately states that ALL teams ARE REQUIRED to WEAR *AND* PROVIDE safety glasses for both themselves AND their guests. And ALL members and onlooks MUST wear them in the Pits.

The Safety Glasses they decided to lend on Friday were for VIP's and non-team related visitors so they could see the robots... and they were to be returned... sadly i do not believe many were. That is why they were not lending them on Saturday.

And.... If everyone just wore their safety glasses in the pits we (the volunteers) wouldn't have had to be evil about it.

On a less evil note:

I do agree about the Bosch Motors and Gearboxes... The large pile of Broken/Damaged Parts by the end of Saturday was astounding. We had a pretty cool Pyramid of Bosch motors going. Not as much Field lint as Annapolis though.

The Competition in Philly was amazing like usual. Carol, Louisa, and the Whole crew of FIRST people, Drexel people, and the other Volunteers deserve a great round of applause for getting everything set-up, run, and broken down.

I do believe at least half of those are ours.

We also have the distinction of being the only team to need a replacement Chipphua at the Philly Comp. :D

DUCKIE 30-03-2003 15:08

That i do recall....

You had the only chipphua I had to replace during my spare parts stints at two regionals... and then the motor was fine... i think you just drilled a hole that was a LITTLE big for the shaft to handle.

Yeah I noticed that- I vaccumed the field and all there really was were parts of rubber tread and a million little plastic bits from some team's wheel. I was gonna save some and post the pic to find out who it was, but now they're all in the vaccuum..

On a side note- the HDPE looked pretty messed up at the end of the day, but teams 87 and 1218 seemed to have no problem latching on in the final half of the playoffs..

edit- In the very bottom of this picture under the large collection of nuts you can see what i was talking about- anyone recognize it? There were at least 200 of those on the carpet

Philadelphia Regional

Hi All,

I would like to thank teams 102 and 316 for being great alliance partners during the finals at Philly. You are both high quality teams and unfortunately we ran into some bad luck during the quarterfinals. Also, I want to congratulate the winning alliance (teams 1218, 204, 486) as well as 341 for winning the chairman's award - your team deserved it.

A special thanks goes out to team 383, the Brazilian Machine, for being so appreciative of me and another team 103 member singing their national anthem. We were so afraid that we would pronounce something wrong, but your hugs and thanks afterward made all of the preparation worth it.

Finally, all of team 103 would like to say thanks to the teams who attended the Philadelphia regional for making this an event to remember!

I'm gonna miss this. Drexel is my last regional as a student on the team, all thats left now is Nationals and off season competitions. Even though we didnt do as well as we expected, I still had a great time due to all of my friends on my team and all of the new ones I met, especially from 365. ;) Can't wait for Nationals!!!

This regional was the best one this year for our team and hopefully the best is still yet to come. We look forward to seeing a lot of you guys at the J&J Midatlantic regional at rutgers and after that at Nationals....good luck teams.

This was my first year on a team, and my last as I am a senior and will be graduating, and I have to say I have had a blast! I just want to thank everyone from my team (my Baby Brother, Pookie, Ashton, Sexy Kyle...etc.), all of my newly found friends from other teams (Adam, Joe, Chris, Kristen...all other girls for that matter lol, my fellow human player from the RoboWizards (we did great!)), and everyone else who helped make this season so great. (Thanks to the volunteers and refs and judges, too!) Best of luck in any Regionals you have left and in Nationals! See you in Houston!
