We can show all these east coasters the wonder and the horror of Fry's Electronics.

That oughta be fun. Until someone starts breaking things. Or until we want to actually buy something.

Cory 27-01-2003 13:01

I will be there...so will most of us tigerbolters!!! yeah! can't wait to see you all:D

Yeah, Jim bought a mind reading IC from digikey. Just between you and me... it's part of our custom circuitboard this year :D.

On a more serious note... yeah, I'm more than willing to try to show you New Yorkers around SJ and other nearby cities if we've got time.

Yea, that would be awesome.... After all all i've heard is negative things about the area (stockmarket...blahblah), so since i am an optimist... i thought there's gotta be some good stuff out there.....*pocket protectors, yea sure.... but i was thinkin more like "hot"spots:rolleyes:*

Well, there is some interesting stuff in San Francisco. It has kind of lost its glamour since I've lived here all my life, but it is fun for people who have never been here. my favorite in SF is Ghirardelli Ice Cream. It is the best Ice cream in te worl served in massive portions. If you will be in SF, definitely check it out. Cable Cars are a favorite of many, but I believe the main tourist line is closed for repairs. Fisherman's Wharf has lots of food areas, along with Pier 39 which can be entertaining for awhile. Yeah... If anyone wants to know any other places of interest, you can feel free to PM/email me. Also, Ian, Maddie, or anyone else from 810 when are you guys coming here and leaving for SVR? If you are going to get here wednesday night, and leaving saturday night, you wont have time to see anything. However, if you are here Sunday, you will have time to see some fun stuff.

srjjs 29-01-2003 23:26

Team 840 will be there. Also, in San Jose, the Tech Museum might be of interest to out-of-towners interested in robotics. There's a nice iMax theater at least.

I hate that IMAX Dome. You neck aches, and your eyes really hurt after watching a movie there. Seeing Fantasia 2000 there was a horrible experience. Other than the IMAX, yeah, the Tech is a cool place.

yea, i dunno how long we will have for attractions but we will have the nights...*achemm* hotspots *achemm*

FotoPlasma 30-01-2003 00:21

I sit around, use my computer, and listen to music, at night. I'm not an interesting guy, though... You should hang out with Jon Lawton. :p

Great America sucks. Too many dumb teenagers wearing t-shirts with Che Guevara's face on them, just because they like the way RATM sounds. It disgusts me too much.
I haven't been to Marine World in years. No comment.
I generally dislike the whole amusement park atmosphere. Last time I was a Disney World, I had more fun timing how long it took custodial personell to clean up a batch of spilled popcorn than almost anything else.

Oh, yeah, SVR will be fun.

Top reasons to show up at the SVR regional:

Its the oldest West coast regional, with some of the oldest California teams attending

The Hawaiian teams will be there

Meet the WRRF FIRST-a-holics, and find out what we are doing up here after the competition

The party at GRT's headquarter afterward (we better have it again this year!)

The silicon Valley regional is where some of the National Champions started at: 100, 232, 255

Some of the strongest rookie teams from last year will be there: 810, 814, 840, 852

I myself haven't decided if I should show up yet... We shall see...

Bill Gold 01-02-2003 14:20

Ken:
You gave all those great reasons to show up to SVR, yet you aren't sure if you're going to come!? That's kind of undercutting our sales pitch, don't you think ;)? You better get your butt to SVR or Ken Krieger and I will have to drive up to Berkeley and kidnap you :D.

Katie Reynolds 01-02-2003 14:28

Awww ... with all these great teams and people going, I wish I could go!

Unfortunately, I don't have the money to go, I can't go by myself (that whole being a minor thing) and I'll probably be at some other regional that weekend (I'm going to GLR and MR!!)

Maybe Chelly and I will show up next year. We'll both be 18 by then ... ;)

Its either the svr regional and death, or a possible date, or sitting at home watching the web cast with icy cold soda and warcraft III and cooking my own rack of lamb. Who knows. You might want to stay when you come up.

Oh man, those guys were so awesome, and so nice. They gave this ziploc bag full of little flowers. lol. We were 38th and they picked us, 1st and 3rd, picking us. I was one of the controllers for the last match and I cannot tell you how nervous I was. In that match we won, but unfortunately we had lost the match before. But that's just awesome. The Megaforce Squadron beat the Cheesy Poofs. I very much didn't expect us to get that far. We were broken all day Friday. All day long our arm wasn't working and in the last matches of the day our left side was cutting out. But we got that fixed by our first match Saturday. Jeez, I was happy just having the Judge's Choice Award. :D I don't know what else to day, SVR was the greatest.

Thanks Team 814 for the nice comments. We pride ourselves for the way we show our "Aloha" spirit. In general, this is the way we treat each other in the states. Someday, we would love to have a regional here.

As for the SVR competition, I wasn't able to attend. I only found out of the results from this forum and the FIRST site. I am very anxious for the team to come back and fill me in on the details. They are traveling to Seattle for the Pacific Northwest Regional.

Congratulations to Teams 115, 254 and 852 for winning the regional. Monta Vista is always very consistent in their showings at the regionals year after year. I always like to see their robot because it is always interesting to learn about their approach to solving each year's Challenge. Cheesy Poofs first mentored our team four years ago. We still feel appreciative to them for coming to Hawaii and telling us about FIRST and their program.

P.S. Dima: No apology needed for the wrong team name.

Dr.Bot 31-03-2003 09:47

I think this year's SVR was the best FIRST event I have vere attended, and that includes the 2000 Nationals. I am extremely proud of the team 1043 rookies I mentored, grateful to team 115 who were such generous mentors, Heck they built a field of play for us!

I also have tremendous admiration for the engineering wizardy of GRT - there machine was a work of art, and am in awe of the Poofs - despite the fact everything possible went wrong for them during the qualifyiers from broken cahines to bad servos to the wrong codes, and disabled allies, they persisted and finished strong.

We had at least 4 rookies at SVR and they all did very well. There are many teams I don't have time to thank, but from #1 to #46 - Thank you all for your hard work, and thanks to the volunteers, mentors, sponsors and the FIRST organziation for making it all possibe. ---

Matt D 31-03-2003 16:31

mentoring

Four years ago, a few members of the Cheesy Poofs flew to Hawaii and Alaska to start the first FIRST teams in those states. There are now 6 Hawaiian teams and 6 Alaskan Teams. This year we mentored 1045 (MSJRT) and 1120 (Milpitas). Both did really well, and their autonomous programs were awesome, but were not selected for the playoffs.

Also, we were proud to see 359 (one of the Hawaiian teams) take home the Chairman's Award and 374 (one of the Alaskan teams) win the Engineering Inspiration Award.

Who knows, seeing that us Hawaii teams were able to place all in the top 10 in San Jose, maybe it won't be to long before we get our own little Regionals. :)

Also congrats to 254, 115, 852 for doing such a great job.

Oh and a special thanks to 254 for helping us get the our highest score of 252 in our last match so we could take 9th in the competition.

Sorry one more...

Thank you very much 258 and 840 for being such great teams.
