hmm... do I see two output shafts?

OneAngryDaisy 29-01-2003 23:23

That's pretty sick.. I'll be flabbergasted if you guys can come up with a robot faster than last year's robot..

uh, slight problem?

i think i see two pistons. not entirely sure, but it sure looks like two pistons. the two rods on the upper right side, i believe they're both pistons.

now, i can't tell which size pistons they are, but if you have two gearboxes, each using two pistons, wouldn't that mean you need to use the piston FIRST gave out? and having an 8 inch stroke piston isn't all that great for a gearbox...

it also means that team 60, no matter what, cannot use any other pistons at all, no?

i don't mean to be a nitpick or anything, but i would think that if indeed you flaunt the rules in using four custom pistons, that FIRST would be rather mad.

now of course, if there's only one piston, or you are indeed using the 8 inch stroke piston as one piston, then take no heed to what i said. if not, you may want to reconsider (even though it's halfway through build).

no, what they are doing is using that box to drive both sides (it looks like) so if they use two custom pistons there, they have one left to spair

according to the new team update, though, we're allowed to use 4 custom pistons anyway, so even if it did drive one side it wouldn't matter.
wait, but it can't only drive one side - how would you turn? assuming this is tank drive, you would need two wheels to go forward and two to go backward, and is that possible with one gearbox driving both sides? unless one of your pneumatic cylinders adds and extra gear in there when you want to turn....could you please explain it to me?
but with us trying to build our own gearboxes, i must say that that is just beautiful.

That isn't correct.

This drives both sides. About it being beautiful. We are very fortunate to have on our team the owner and lead man of one of the largest machine shops in the US helping us design and build the gear box (robot). We (students/teachers/machinists) spend about 40 hours a week working together in the machine shop. With their help our students are able to ACTUALLY DESIGN AND BUILD a gear box (robot) like this.
