Since we are a first year team, we have no previous years' robots to drive, so we just assembled a very simple machine so our potential drivers could start practicing.

If you build simple, you can avoid being "behind," but you are compromising your capabilities. The bolt-together drive train works, but it will put as at a major disadvantage compared to what my old team, TechnoKats, and others will come up with. Next year, Team 1062 will have something more exotic, but we may well be behind where we'd like to be three weeks after kickoff.

Have you seen the Segway's there? They're a test city.

Yep. They have several of them and schedule "test drives" for those who sign up. I think you have to live in Celebration (which I don't) to sign up for the demo/test drive. The store doing the demos sells electric scooters and cars, but they don't sell Segways. If you want to buy one after the demo, you buy if from Amazon.

We have a rolling chassis. All design was done a while ago. All parts are in (except for some MMH stuff) Machining for one of our specialty systems is done. Machining for the drivetrain is nearly done. Machining for the other specialty subsystem was started yesterday. We hope to mount some motors and drive tomorrow. The first specialty subsystem will be mounted tomorrow. We are about a week ahead of last year but we figure we should have a week left for testing and programming this year so all in all I'd say we're 2 days behind maybe.

I think behind is an understatement for us.... yeah... we currently have nothing... and will not be meeting again until Monday at the earliest, and we only met two nights this past week..... perhaps by next Wed. we will agree on a concept. If all goes well, we will have a moving base by the 18th. :(

Josh Fritsch 31-01-2003 15:48

Benind is an understatement lolz...but only because we just got our materials this past monday..:( but were moving along good now because we had time to basicly maked step by step directions on how to build it in all our down time.

Our design is entirely complete. We're just waiting on parts to come in from points all around the globe
After a long day of working on our robot and coming home. It always makes me feel better when I read about how behind other teams are.:) So far we have a working drivetrain that hasn't been tested, and an arm that hasn't been tested. As long as pneumatics and electronics dont' take forever. We will be done by next week sometime.

I'm glad others' perceived misfortune makes you smile.

If you've never tested it, how do know it's working?

Not really. Im happy because I am ahead. Our teacher complained to us that we were behind around week three because we had a rolling chasis and an arm while all along I knew we were ahead.:) Btw I know the chasis will work because it is the one first gave us baring any unatural disaster.:D Of course our robot may not look gracefull but at least it will get the job done.

if a team doesnt get.....

if a team doesnt get done building their robot before the ship date what will happen? will they just have to miss the first compatition or what?

Gadget470 13-02-2003 16:39

as far as I know they don't get to compete at all

Gamer930 13-02-2003 16:49

if you don't finish before ship then just ship it and then hope you can finish on the thursday (practice day) at your first regionals and just miss your practice matchs.
