music in the pitss

Does anyone relize that this year there can be NO music in the pit area? Two years ago we made a robot ambulance that had a great sound system. And know I read that we can't use it!! Does anyone have any views on this?

hixofthehood 02-02-2003 10:33

Does this mean I can't sing in the pits? Because that would be an injustice to humanity.

But seriously, no music at all? I missed that rule. It seems like it couldn't possibly exist.

When I am around the robots, I just gotta hear some kind of do-doo-do-doo-do do-doo-do-do-doo and some such.

Where in the rules does it say no pit music?

ehehehe - that one... event... at the NYC regional probably helped in making this rule. For those of you who weren't there, at the NYC regional, the pit announcer was, well, I guess you could call her a New Yorker at heart. Really impatient, really rude, and really getting on everyone's nerves ("Hey Team Blah-bleh-blah, C'MON, YOU'RE LATE, LET'S GOOOOO, LETS GET ON WITH IT!!!!!"). At one point, one of the teams cranked their stereo-cart-system up pretty loud... soon she comes on - "Whoever's playing that music, turn it down!" The team - whoever they were - just cranked it louder. "TURN IT DOWN!" It just went louder. Suddenly everyone in the pits began cheering for the team because they were defying that announcer who was so impatient and so rude to everyone. The story ends when finally the team did turn their system down, most likely from the interfearence from a mentor.

Actually, I just found a picture that my friend took of this lady. Don't be fooled by it - although she looks like a nice friendly grandmother, she has a really harsh tongue.

Yan Wang 02-02-2003 10:54

That woman brings up bad memories... when our team got to the Canadian regional, it felt as thought it was near quite after that woman screamed constantly at us.

Solace 02-02-2003 11:44

yeah, we were at NYC last year, and she scared the crap out of us.

Moshingkow 02-02-2003 11:44

talk about an angry woman. like we werent trying to get there on time! jeeezus. She even kept on screaming some teams names when they already were up at the playing field!!!

oh that reminds me. Duct tape must be put on the "things to bring to the regional" list.. :)

Our manual says, "no loud audio systems..." doesn't say NO music.

HolyMasamune 03-02-2003 02:19

FIRST just doesn't want loud sounds/noises to disrupt other teams from working efficiently. If you play music at a reasonable sound level, it should be fine. Once it gets too loud, then it might be annoying.

Goya 03-02-2003 14:09

Thats nothing.

Team 19 was positiioned 3 feet directly in front of her. She would scream and scream and scream. Even when she was talking to us, she would yell it over the mic rather than to us.

Brings back memories.

Joe Matt 03-02-2003 14:43

Hey guys, stop making fun of the lady. Thanks. It's just... not nice. :)

MikeDubreuil 03-02-2003 15:16

I personally think it's an excellent rule.

I find it extremely annoying when teams announce the entering and exiting of their robot with loud music. It may get your team pumped for your next match, but it makes everyone else pissed off. Those of you with excessively loud audio systems obviously have not dealt with the gracious part of gracious professionalism.

With over 40 robots at most regionals you can create an audio nightmare. That's obviously what happened during the NYC regional, and everyone acted with gracious professionalism there didn't they?

Stillen 03-02-2003 17:53

only 80s music fans will reconize this

As the band Autograph had said, "TURN UP THE RADIO",

Mullen 03-02-2003 20:14

now, is it NO music or no LOUD music? because last year our team played music in the pits but it wasnt really loud, just enough so our team could hear it...being that we played it from a portable CD player and a poor set of computer speakers it wasnt really loud anyways. would this be allowable this year or would that be a no-no?

The manual says no Loud music. Anyone seen an update on the manual?

Gadget470 04-02-2003 06:43

I think this is also for the incessantly annoying "Who Let The Dogs Out" every 20 minutes. That was at the canadian regional, not sure which team. Had a big boom box and were blasting music in the stands for the most part. Is this rule for pits or for whole stadiums?

Joe Matt 04-02-2003 07:58

My guess is that you can bring an iPod and listen, but don't bring your Bose Home Theater system and you $5000 sub and then listen to Blue Man with the music up as loud as it can get.

Koko Ed 04-02-2003 08:03

Does anyone else find it rather ironic that FIRST is banning loud music when they're blaring loud music all day during the competition?

Alfred Thompson 04-02-2003 11:46

I don't "do" loud noise

It's got to be quiet some place. Personally I'm still bringing ear plugs this year.

I thought the same thing. If a person had a year-round job in an environment as loud as that created by the music and announcements from the "official" PA system at a FIRST competition, the person would have serious hearing loss in a short time if they didn't use ear plugs.

I worked for years on the factory floor. Loud music and loud equipment is the order of the day. I even take naps during lunch. You get used to it.

You get used to it, but you still suffer hearing loss if the sound pressure level is too high. I could be wrong, but I think 90dba is the most you should be exposed to on an 8 hour/day basis.

My old supervisor told me I was going to go deaf because I used to play my headphones so loudly.

Nah I'm fine and still trying very hard to make myself deaf by blaring my boombox as loud as I can on my dock. I don't think playing Toni Braxton will make you deaf though.

If there are several sorces of loud music in the pits, it gets really anoying. If there is only one source of loud music, it isn't as bad (depending on what the music is).

Macarina (sp?) was the song that was played about 5 times/hour my first two or so years with FIRST ('96-'97) I suppose they played it at least a few times last year, but, fortunately not too often.

I remember one of the first songs they played at the Buckeye regional was Margaritaville. I may be mistaken but I don't think it was a Jimmy Buffet crowd attending the regional.

All teams should vote for music or no music!!

AJ Quick 05-02-2003 16:47

Just as long as we can play the theme song to "King of the Hill" over and over again, we will be fine.

(Just because it goes along so nicely with the game this year).

Firewolf 05-02-2003 17:59

this is harsh man, i can't live with out music - i will start twiching,
and just - o i don't wanna get into it,
i really wish there IS music, or else i'll start singing
(and playing air gutar and drums)
and BELIEVE me, THAT you don't wanna hear...:o

EvilInside 05-02-2003 22:05

Keep the music

Well, I for one vote for either Tom Petty, Nirvana, or The Cars. Mostly Tom Petty though, because I don't think anyone can legitimately say Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is a terrible band.

So what about the teams who announce there arrival and departure through chants, do you find them as annoying as well? Personally when I hear them I find it fun and it makes everyone, if its loud enough, look up for a second and notice there team. In fact I think its an excellent idea to have the team chanting or playing there music because it gives them publicity to other teams and it helps people know that their team is fun and approachable.

Also I would like to say that I love the music in the pits and that I hope it doesn't get completely taken out. Otherwise people will be hearing my modified versions of songs, which believe me isn't something you want to hear.
