Espn covering First again

I have a hunch with the fan friendly game this year that Espn will cover the games.

David Kelly 12-01-2002 19:26

tha'd be sweet!! but i don't see it happening. NASA has all the TV stuff now

Joe Matt 12-01-2002 20:02

Too bad I don't get NASA TV (or the stupid people at AT&T Cable are hatching a plan to rid me away from robotics and into the library!

Summmergrl2298 12-01-2002 20:06

ya know, people out here can only get NASA when they have satelite--NOT COOL! i hope they broadcast on ESPN, that would be very hot, but like u guys said, i dont see it happening either :(

we don't get NASA TV anymore either. we did get it for years when i wasn't in FIRST. Comcast has to be the WORST cable company.

Summmergrl2298 12-01-2002 20:10

well no matter WHAT cable u get, nobody gets NASA! maybe somebody should talk to the peeps at FIRST about getting this stuff on something that people actually get--i mean they kinda complain about no publicity, so why not put it on something like espn?

Lora Knepper 12-01-2002 21:47

ESPN 2 used to cover FIRST back in the day.... I'm still not sure why they stopped. It would be nice to have a more mainstream coverage again though, and I know I wasn't the only extremely frustrated person over the SoCal regional last year when it came down to the last match, and NASA cut it off to sleeping astronauts! Maybe Disney could give us a hand in this. They do have an amazing number of mainstream tv networks... ABC, Disney Channel, and ESPN I do believe...

Summmergrl2298 12-01-2002 22:02

actually i was watching the 1st FIRST competion (waaay back in 92) and it was covered by espn. i thnk ur right lora--we need to get somebody to cover this for us! (p.s. the truck is hot!)

D.J. Fluck 12-01-2002 22:09

The first time i ever heard anything about FIRST was in 1998 when ESPN showed the finals for the national championships (and we woin) thats kind of why i actually watched...i think it would be great for FIRST if it was brodcasted on ESPN....that would increase the viewing audience..plus, how many people actually get nasa TV?

Summmergrl2298 12-01-2002 22:11

thats the problem, nobody does get nasa, so all of the regular cable peeps are kinda screwed...at least with cable u get ESPN, does anybody know if they're broadcasting it this year?

OtakuRob 13-01-2002 03:54

Well, I may have a partial answer.. As the years of ESPN coverage were ending, you can see Dean saying more and more that atheletes are inadequate basises( or whatever it's plural is) for the youth of the nation.. We watched a tape of the coverage of Tower Terror and Rug Rage, and you can see the progression..

Nasa is all we'll get for now, though Disney does own ABC.. And they are making a movie.. Maybe we'll see ABC next year.. I hear this year National Geographic was smarming kickoff and probably Nationals..

Jeff Waegelin 13-01-2002 20:26

I don't get NASA either. Comcast eliminated it as of the beginning of this year.

Summmergrl2298 13-01-2002 20:42

yeah i heard about the movie. i think thats really cool, although the people they get to star in it are going to know nothing about FIRST and all the values that come from it. i would love to see real FIRST people star in it.

OtakuRob 13-01-2002 22:55

Re: Movie

I wanna see smaller teams in there as opposition to the protagonists.. But no, it'll probably be teams with product placement in mind..

No offense to any teams that fit that description..

Summmergrl2298 13-01-2002 23:21

otaku (sie-h20-bot, correct?) wat do u mean?

JVN 13-01-2002 23:45

Matthew McConaughey as Joe Johnson....
Danny Devito as Dean Kamen...

Summmergrl2298 13-01-2002 23:58

heheh yea that would be sweet...

Todd Derbyshire 14-01-2002 15:21

Note to Dean Kamean

Dear Dean Kamean,

Nasa TV does not exist except for outer space can we please have the matches broadcasted on something else.

Sincerely

Your pal Todd p.s I don't care if its PBS!!!!

FIRST THE MOVIE?!?!

"I can see it now...

Some horrible Disney Channel actors staring in an action/romance/comedy adventure throught robotics! See Aaron Carter as the head of the team! Be amazed at the poor acting skills! Be at awa at there delemas (oh,no Joe {Aaron}, the box of parts they, {close up} got lost in the mail!) and their impossible to build robot! Wonder how the hell they have time to go to a pizza parlor and do everything else underthe sun with 2 weeks to go! Pee in your pants at how cheesey and pathetic their robot becomes! And gasp at how low of lifeforms they make the opposition look! Now Direct-To-Video It's "Aaron Carter stars in as Joe, Team Wave! A Poor Documentary on FIRST Robotics. "

Yea, Dany Devito as Dean Kamen, too bad he is too big to ride the Segway.

OtakuRob 14-01-2002 20:59

1. Correct, I am a Sie-H2O-Bot..

2. I'm just saying that if other teams were in on the film, I don't just want to see big name corporate teams.. ( again, no offense), I'd like to see some teams with no product placement..

3. The movie would go as follows: Kid joins team, team builds bot, kid finds true love, bot blows a motor( splits frame, etc.), kid loses girl, kid fixes bot, team wins, kid gets girl back..

Make sense??

I'll die laughing if it comes out this way ;) But one hopes that since FIRST looked over the script it will be at least a bit better than your average Disney made for TV movie!

Just your classic Robot love triangle.

I can see it now.....

MARCUS, our male lead, is busy working on Podunk High School's FIRST robot. He's wearing a tuxedo, with a vest adorned with interlocking triangles, squares and circles, and he's crying. He's careful not to let any tears fall on the robot's electronics. SHELIA , his erstwhile girlfriend, enters the room. She's wearing a prom dress, and has a robot-shaped corsage.

SHELIA: Why are you working on this robot now? This is our prom night!

MARCUS: You just don't get it, do you?

SHELIA: No, I don't!

MARCUS: It was kind of a rhetorical question.

SHELIA: Sorry about that - try again.

MARCUS: You just don't get it, do you?

SHELIA looks at MARCUS with a look that says, "I'm waiting for you to answer your rhetorical question, and I love you.

MARCUS: This robot isn't about me! It's about knowledge! And teamwork! And everything that's right about America! This robot's about....

At this point MARCUS is interrupted by SHELIA's wet sloppy kiss. As they're kissing, MARCUS reaches behind SHELIA, grabs a wrench, and starts tightening down bolts on the robot. Then he gives a thumbs up to the camera

Fade to black.

THE END

What do you think?

Jay5780 16-01-2002 22:57

FIRST ON TV

I agree it would be great to see FIRST back on TV.

But... I was always dissapointed in the way all they showed before was the quarterfinals on.

It would be great to have an actual show like battle bots or robotica where they would show all of the matches.

I guess this wouldn't happen until the National Event was a qualifiers only event, but hey a guy can dream.

Dindau 17-01-2002 19:50

Write a letter

Could we all write letters to ESPN and ask them to show it?

D.J. Fluck 17-01-2002 20:32

i really dont know how much help that would be....

buz 10-02-2002 12:29

TV

Hey when im with some people and all the sudden there is robotics on the tv the people start askin a bunch of questions and are really into it. i don't know why the robotics was on tv sometimes (around me anyway) there are specials on the news or a&e that i just happen to catch but i really think that if espn or another big station broadcast the competition right that people will watch it. they have to show how awsome and interesting it really is....oh well

Wetzel 11-02-2002 03:43

I get NASA with my Media General, no wait, ...what is it now...I have Road Runner for my modem....I can't remember who my cable provider is, but I get NASA. Havn't heard about this movie...
Keanu Reaves as Dean!

emilywll 11-02-2002 09:09

So what are we going to do about this? If no one gets NASA TV then what is the point of them covering the competitions? If FIRST really wanted to go global and get more recognition they would stick with ESPN, ABC or even Disney so that EVERYONE can get their robotics fix.

Todd Derbyshire 11-02-2002 13:37

I say we write letters to FIRST and ESPN. If one team member from each team would like to write a letter I think that would get the ball rolling.

Anyone know where to write? The address for the programming office? Or where would we want to wend a letter?
I think 3,000 letters is doable and would make a large impact.

D.J. Fluck 12-02-2002 11:14

I found the address

Start sending letters!

ESPN Television
ESPN Plaza
Bristol, CT 06010

Wetzel 12-02-2002 15:54

Most excelent. Will foward the address to interested members my team...

emilywll 12-02-2002 20:47

I am ready to start pumping out those letters.

Greg McCoy 12-02-2002 21:04

NASA TV is available as streaming video from the Internet, but we all know what great quality that will give us.
