Graphics Card?

I've got two different graphics cards avaliable for my old system, i was wondering which one i should choose.

Best Data TNT2 M64 (32mb)

or

ATI Rage128 (32mb)

I've always been a big fan of the NVidia chips. But most likely there's not a _whole_ lot of difference...pick the prettiest one :)

Harrison 02-02-2003 23:10

I would vote for neither of those 2......but, really they're pretty much the same...

Prettyness sounds like a good thing to base it on.

yangotang 03-02-2003 10:14

no, i was just wondering because i can choose either of them for free, and i was trying to figure out which one was better performance-wise

D.J. Fluck 03-02-2003 13:12

Yes, they are about the same. Go with the Nvidia one. heh I still prefer my 128 Meg Radeon 9000 card, but thats just me ;)

Jnadke 03-02-2003 13:31

The Rage 128 is one generation behind the TNT2, so stick with the Nvidia.

Go to http://www.nvidia.com to pick up some drivers.

Rage 128 - Fall 1998
TNT2 M64 - Fall 1999

srjjs 03-02-2003 23:24

Where are you geting these for free?
Please tell me you're not going to steal one from one of our robotics computers.

yangotang 04-02-2003 09:58

LOL, No. My friend's comps, he's dumping them out.

evulish 04-02-2003 16:09

Take both. Add it to a parts box :) Decent graphics cards are sometimes hard to find.

Frank(Aflak) 04-02-2003 19:20

Do those cards still count as decent? I used to have a RIVA TNT 16mb. . . it died, it stopped supported d3d, so I couldn't do anything 3d. I cried. Then I built my new system (pets Ti 4600)

go witht he TNT2, the only realy ATI cards that can compete with similar nVidia ones are the 9000+ ones, which smoke everything. nVidia also has better driver support, you can probably get loads of performance increase by getting the latest driver for your card.

evulish 04-02-2003 23:56

I'd say anything with over 4mb of video RAM is decent. But then again, I work with old computers :) I guess it may not be very suitable for 3D Studio or Unreal Tourny 2k3...but still, I think it's decent :)

Certainly not. Soon, 64MB will be the industry standard to ship with computers.

As for the Rage vs. the nVidia, at that time nVidia was well ahead of ATI. The tables have turned now, but I'd certainly go with the nVidia given the choice.

The nVidia TNT2 has much better performance. I've used both in my system to test and benchmark. Also, a good reference is the scores at www.futuremark.com - website of the makers of 3dMark 01 and 03... and PcMark 01.

I just recently picked up a Gforce 3 TI 200 for less than $40... it runs most games. You might want to look into something like that.
