I need free servers compatable with phpBB

Do any of you all know of any free servers, compatible with phpBB without pop-ups and banners?

Jeremy_Mc 03-02-2003 13:33

Uh that's really not gonna happen...

We could possibly give you space, but i'd prefer if you'd go to www.lycos.co.uk

it's a good server

Do they have banners and/or popups?

Jeremy_Mc 03-02-2003 14:47

There are no free servers that have those features that lack ad's. It just doesn't exist. Those services cost money to setup and maintain...

I'd suggest using www.ipowerweb.com for a cheap host with those features, or use www.lycos.co.uk with ad's.

our website (lightningrobotics.com) uses www.ipowerweb.com. They are a pretty good host. Not the greatest but cheap. Always up, but can be slow at times. Its located in California, and we are in michigan so that could be part of it

Go to http://www.webhostingtalk.com and ask for free hosting. It should work.

Do you happen to have any kids on your team with broadband? If so, tap into that :) Most team webpages don't generate much traffic...(ours maybe gets about 20 hits per day...at the most :D) If they have a dynamic IP address, you can just use a service that's being talked about in another thread...I forget which one but it's recent. Or if it's static, just buy a domain for like $15/year and point it to that box. All you need is a lowly p133 or something to run a server. So that's not the free way to go (better than paying hostings fees), nor the easiest, but it's certainly an option.

only 20 hits? wow...we get like 200+ hits and have gotten about 5500+ hits since the beginning of january.

our server is hefty...dual 800's with 512 MB of DDR running suse linux 8 on 2 x 30GB SCSI drives w. RAID on a ds-3 connection...we own the server and connection so there are no fees.

:ahh:
Wow.
Our site is running off my webserver right now...a 450mhz G3 mac running OSX 10.2.3 with apache, php4, and mysql 4. I'm on a pretty nice static DSL line, but if we start getting traffic like that, then we'll be having troubles.
Luckily, our head mentor is friends with a guy who owns an ISP...and I also happen to WORK there...so we'll soon be partaking of a T3 that leads to an optic fiber line... :)

Wow. you're lucky. but why SuSe?

Our server's some piece of crap that our school gave us, and it just sucks. There's no server side stuff at all, only apache.

easy to manage :) our teacher/advisor is good with linux, but not totally fluent. we can update, install and uninstall, and manage services really easy with SuSe with it's nifty little YaST interface :)
