Webring

Has anyone ever though of starting a 'webring' between first team's websites?

What would you guys think of something like that?

We'd need some site to act as the "Home" (and mabey someone to register www.firstwebring.org and have it point at that site) The site could either be a team's site, or a number of teams could share in the design of a independent site. Also, someone could design a cool logo that links to the home.

I don't have any time to put into this, but just a thought that might be a cool idea.

Jeremy_Mc 03-02-2003 21:56

i'm going to try set something up like this tonight.

look for a post tomorrow.

I'd be happy to talk it over with my team. We're setting up a dedicated server at a local sponsor/ISP, so we'll be able to do it. However, we're a rookie team..and between scrambling to finish our robot and scrambling to get this server up and running and scrambling to finish our website, we probably wouldn't have time to do it until after the brunt of FIRST is over.
I'd be willing to buy the domain and work on the site in "my spare time", though: at least once march 8th is past.

Your submission software is great for this, Jeremy.
So, are we looking toward a temporary database and a move toward a permanent ring after the madness?

--Petey

Joe Matt 03-02-2003 21:59

We should have Sparky's Web Site up soon, so I'll add it to the webring.

Brandon Martus 03-02-2003 22:31

There was one a year or two ago. We used be a part of it, and have links to it it on our main page. It seemed to be unkept and many of the links went down, and so I removed it.

Jeremy_Mc 03-02-2003 22:58

I'm basing it off the link submission code from our site yes... :)

I reserved www.firstwebring.tk ...

I can't exactly order a top level domain right now, i will hopefully soon.

If you go to the link and nothing works it's because i'm still working on it and i don't want to put a temporary document up....i'll post here again when i'm completely done (should be in < one hour)

during that time, please do check out our site and see what it has to offer... :)

hope to see your pages up there soon!

Petey 04-02-2003 09:20

I'll see if I can buy it after school, Jeremy. We'll be working on our server all afternoon.

What do we want...www.firstwebring.org? I've got an acccount on stargateinc.com and I can just add it thru there.

Joe Matt 04-02-2003 09:23

My ideas:

www.firstwebring.com (since most places use com than anything else)
www.firstteamswebring.com
www.firstroboticswebring.com

Those are my ideas.

I think firstwebring is fine, but what the appendage is is a different question.
Firstwebring.com
Firstwebring.net
Firstwebring.org

These are all available.
I was thinking about trying firstteams, but then you run into the ugly double T.
Though .org might be more correct, we'll get more traffic from a .com or a .net, but the best from a .com. Price doesn't matter...

So, general consensus time: What should I grab?

Jeff Waegelin 04-02-2003 12:58

I vote for www.firstwebring.com

Volte 04-02-2003 13:00

Moderator... anyone, doesnt mater which. can you place a poll for the three options? that would be cool

Jeremy_Mc 04-02-2003 14:32

I have the script done...adding the finishing touches now. :)

You can check it out at www.firstubergeeks.com/webring

Jack 04-02-2003 15:19

not sure if anyone has allready registered, but eventhough many sites are .com, i do think that this would be better firstwebring.org

And, nice job especially Jeremy_Mc for making a script for this. (Heck, I only posted this like 16 hours ago)

Also, just a little question. Because it takes like 48 hours for a DNS to resolve, what happens if two people buy the same domain at roughly the same time? - anybody know?

Jeremy_Mc 04-02-2003 15:23

the Übergeeks will be happy to host the script also...

(we can change the look of it from what it is now...i just thought i'd integrate it into the übergeeks site for ease of construction)

We're on a dual 800 MHz with 512 MB of DDR with 2 x 30 GB SCSI drives all connected to a DS-3 connection.

It'll save us some money on hosting :) and you can easily point the domain there...just tell what the domain is and i'll setup the DNS/virtual host this afternoon

XServe's, PowerMacs? What is your type of server?

they're gateway servers running linux

we have 2 of them...if it gets popular enough we can dedicate one solely to the webring

Impossible.
It may take 48 hours for DNS to resolve, but that has nothing to do with the availability of domain names. I imagine Internic keeps a database which all the registrars draw from.

When it says DNS takes 48 hours to resolve, that is the amount of time it takes for the information that yourdomain.com really means your.numeric.ip. to propogate through the system.
Every night, all of the days DNS registrations are sent to 701, a monstrous DNS server in Washington State. It spends the next 24 hours filtering back down through the ISPs

The Force Team would also be happy to host it.
We're in the final stages of configuring a FreeBSD server with a 20 gig IDE and a 20 gig SCSI drive.
As for our bandwidth, well, it'll be one of two things.
A) a T1, either at our school or at a local ISP
B) (and this is the kicker) a T3 that get's IT's bandwidth from a local optic fiber line. Lemme explain, cause this is one helluva nerd tale. I work at said local ISP, right? There is an optic fiber line leading down the street to another house. This guy has a T3 to the business he owns in the town over, which has a true blue fiber optic line. Basically, this guy gives us some some of his bandwidth in exchange for a colo and tech support. So, depending on what goes on with that, we'll either have slightly less or slightly better bandwidth then you.

We could always split up the hosting...but that might go into needless complications...

Anyway...

I'll see if I can get the domain name within the next half hour.

--Petey

Jeremy_Mc 04-02-2003 16:59

we're registering firstwebring.org as we speak....so the creation of a domain by anyone else is needless. :)

thanks tho. it should be up asap...

Once again, I'm going to have to say wow!

I was looking at some sites last night, and say that they were part of a webring. SO... I though, what the heck, lets see what ppl think of a first webring.

Personally, I'll screw around with photoshop over this next week (more weekend), and try to make a really cool logo.

Whoever really takes this up (Jeremy_Mc & Petey ??), i think it'll be really cool, and a great place for web designers to show off their stuff.

Looks like Jeremy_Mc is heading it up, though our team is of course willing to help wherever we're needed.

Added!!! :D

BTW, you'll have to change the IMG SRC to http://www.firstubergeeks.com/webring/webring.gif rather than just /webring.gif. It dosn't work otherwise for me. Plus it's safer to do that in this world of HTML and XML... :yikes:

I am reading this and I have a question. What is a webring?

A web ring is a small script people add to their pages that links it with other pages. They usually put an image with selectors for going left or right to another site. So if you go to our forums and go to 'Other Teams' there will be the little picture there waiting to go.

rust710 05-02-2003 21:35

Ok that makes sence. Thanks
Joseph.

whoooaa thanks for pointing that out!

i'll fix that en uno momento :)

[edit] actually, it would be better if you could put it on your own server...if not it's perfectly fine, but it would be better for me and you wouldn't have to change the code :) thanks [/edit]

Error

I joined, I'm glad to see everyone rallying around a good webring, If you need any other help I'd be glad to help you. I just wanted to let you know in the code i found a little error. the code is as follows:
<map name="MyMap">
<area shape="rect" coords="79,0,101,39" href="http://www.firstubergeeks.com/webring/click.php?mode=next&id=24">
<area shape="rect" coords="0,0,20,39" href="http://www.firstubergeeks.com/webring/click.php?mode=previous&id=24">
<area shape="rect" href="www.firstubergeeks.com/webring" coords="0,0,100,40">
</map>
<img src="webring.gif" usemap="#MyMap" border=0>

and the last link doesn't have "http://" before the "www". Just thought I'd let you know. And once again, thanks for creating a good webring.
