Most Underrated Movie Ever

Ok, everyone is always like, "This is the best movie I have ever seen." Well, what about the movies that no one gives credit to? So, here, make you claims to the movie you think is so great, yet no one else ever says it.

Mine: it was close, but Clue narrowly edges out Kingpin and Fight Club (and maybe Cruel Intentions at the risk of sounding feminine) Clue was just a genius idea: make a comedy about a board game that was about murder! That and I love subtle humor.

"MRS. PEACOCK WAS A MAN!??!"

Katie Reynolds 08-02-2003 13:12

Cruel Intentions was definitely a good movie.

I think Moulin Rouge was definitely underrated! It's such a good movie! And Baz Luhrmann rocks! :)

KaylaButt 08-02-2003 14:15

How was Moulin Rouge an underrated movie? It won many an award, I think the same goes for CLUE, in a way. Lots of people are heavily into the movie, a very big cult following. I think it should be a movie that people saw, but, don't fully see the beauty in. Like, something that people saw and were content with, but that you think deserves a bit more credit.

Ergo, I would say...Titanic. :-)

BingoTheClowno 08-02-2003 14:15

Amen to that. (forfeiting his goth hood for a sec), Moulin Rouge was definately one of the best movies I've ever seen. But as for Baz's other films, Strictly Ballroom was rated apropriately. It sucked more than Spy Kids 2.

Mullet 08-02-2003 14:46

Kayla, I'm sorry, but any movie with the title of "highest grossing movie in the world." isn't underrated. And, Bingo, two points for the Strictly Ballroom reference.

KaylaButt 08-02-2003 14:49

Oh darn, how could I have failed to factor that in...silly me. Imagine my embarrassment and shame of doing the exact thing I had accused the two of you of doing, it's almost like I planned it and was using myself as an example of wrong doing.

Almost.

EddieMcD 08-02-2003 15:47

Clue and Cruel Intentions were both good movies. But there was a movie Freddie Prinze Jr. and Mathew Lillard did together a few years back called Wing Commander. I had never heard of it (other than the game) until I saw it in the store and picked it up. I watched it, and enjoyed it, making it towards the top of my list of underrated movies.

How about Starship Troopers? Okay, the movie practically mutilated the entire book (and IMO, the book was much better), but it was action packed. Although for those who liked the 40 year old political/sci-fi novel, the movie probably isn't for you.

Melissa Nute 08-02-2003 16:01

Cube...nuf said :p

John Bono 08-02-2003 18:29

Hmm... underated?
I would have to say everyone forgot about Unbreakable and its awesomeness pretty quickly (except the weaknesses were pretty lame--"You have the same achiles' heel as me! We can both drown!"
Super Mario Bros. I thought was actually pretty good.
And Mystery Men--a great mix of comedy and action.
For its time, though, the number one ever would have to be UHF.

Mike Schroeder 08-02-2003 23:22

underrated movies ummm

Weird Al - UHF
Star Wars Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace--- Okay i know what you are saying terrible movie.... but it was destined to suck, it is the only movie that didnt require too much fighting, it was a setup movie, but EPII is awsome, and EPIII will rock in the great battle deparment

hmmm how about We Were Soldiers, the most awsomest movie ever
aww heck any Mel Gibson War movie was awsome

George1902 09-02-2003 00:24

anyone who knows Kevin Smith's movies (the ones with Jay and Silent Bob) will understand why i think Clerks is incredibly underrated.

among enthusiasts of these movies, people generally think Clerks is the worst, however it's by far my favorite. sure, the acting in some parts isn't as good as Chasing Amy, and there aren't as many big stars as in Dogma, but the script is WAY better than any of the other movies.

Harrison 09-02-2003 00:39

Cruel Intentions was awesome :p

As for most under-rated: K-19 The Windowmaker. OMG, it is such an amazing movie.

tatsak42 09-02-2003 01:44

Pi. That is one... good and strange movie. heeeeya...

Moulin Rouge is awful...

This is most underrated movie thread. Titanic belongs in the overrated thread. I was a big fan of the history of the Titanic and everything, but after seeing that movie I was so disgusted, I lost all respect for James Cameron and I haven't paid attention to any Titanic news since then.

Bingo. Thats it. My mom liked Clerks, and she doesnt like any of the movies I watch (BTW: I agree and Kevin Smith also agrees that Mall Rats was his worst movie..)

Just because they serve you, doesn't mean they like you... :D

Ben Mitchell 09-02-2003 10:39

No on seems to appreciate "Blade Runner" anymore - the religious symbolism, and mutliple layers of meaning seem to be lost on people these days.

Go buy a copy of Blade Runner, and be amazed.

AJ Quick 09-02-2003 11:26

Ghostbusters.

Oh come-on.. people never remember it anymore.

Da SPAMinatress 09-02-2003 12:52

The Goonies... such a great movie

thats all i have to say

John Bono 09-02-2003 14:27

Goonies--that remidns me... Willow! Willow was an awesome movie!
I probably would've liked Blade Runner, if it wasn't so gawduful slow.

Mullet 09-02-2003 15:30

George, amen to Dogma and Chasing Amy. Two great movies. Also, I forgot about UHF. Another film I thought of no one talks about, probably because it is so recent: One Hour Photo. It is out on DVD now and I have to get it. Honestly, one of the top 5 movies I have ever seen. See it now. Not as underrated as some of the others because everyone I know who has actually seen it praises it.

There is so much to respond to in this thread. But for now I'm going to say that The Phantom Menace is one of the worst movies ever, and it grossed grossly, so it has to be labeled overrated.

UHF is one of my top 5 movies of all time (and High Fidelity isn't ;) )
UHF rules.
Besides, what better way to say "I love you" than with the gift of a spatula?

Oh, and, I watched Kayla post that Titanic comment *live*, and she said "I bet people aren't going to get the sarcasm." I didn't believe her, but I was wrong. Titanic had the highest domestic product (unadjusted), won a few handfuls of awards, was talked about at school for weeks and weeks and weeks. That's why it's such a strong counterexample of an underrated movie.

Got that right. Ghostbusters and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were awesome, but the cartoons were MUCH better. I think FOX is trying to remake the ninja turtles. I'll have to see if its worth my time. As for most underrated movie: COOL RUNNINGS!!!! Wow that was one awesome movie. It was so hilarious. Im laughing right now remembering some of the great lines...

Give it up, it's bobsled time!
This is one of the greatest classics, but I think it gets a great deal of credit to match, at least among anyone with a soul. So I wouldn't call it most underrated, but what a great film.

How about A Goofy Movie? It is nearly pure genius, yet it is snuffed in the line of Disney classics. Great soundtrack, great characters, great plot, great attention to detail--the list goes on and on.
Check the map, Goof. This movie's underrated.

Johca_Gaorl 10-02-2003 12:42

Clerks is excellent, that's my favorite Kevin Smith movie "I'm not even supposed to be here today!"
Lilo & Stitch, ya it's a Disney movie so it's automatically kinda hyped, but it disappeared, plus I'm sure a lot of you all never saw it as it is a Disney movie, but rent it and watch it, it's hilarious.
UHF
Fight Club is brilliant, just brilliant
Blade Runner
Clue

I got more still, but I will stop, all classics, if you haven't seen any of these, go get them!

Greg Perkins 10-02-2003 13:06

Behind Enemy Lines!

bad

Morgoth 11-02-2003 10:17

LOTR Fellowship of the Ring. I don't think they hyped it a lot because they weren't sure if people were going to like it. Ask anybody who doesn't like the movie if they have read the books. Most haven't and wouldn't understand it anyway.

Joe Matt 11-02-2003 10:27

The Emperor's New Groove. Disney didnt promote it, yet it had true comedy that evolved beyond the Shrek fart jokes and had irony.

Team238-aholic 11-02-2003 19:47

Rocky Horror Picture Show :)

Nelly51987 11-02-2003 20:15

empire records! oooh and the Laybarynth... i have no idea how to spell that. did anyone see that? haha. funny movie. david bowie rocks in it. uhhh... and music from another room. i can't think of anymore.

I must watch this soon. I have it in my home and I hear it's quite intelligently funny. I think I'll watch it tomorrow.

Mullet 12-02-2003 14:06

EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE! How could've I forgotten! Awesome and hilarious movie. Also, good to see someone else like Rocky Horror Picture Show. Creepy, but great.

Also, what about the entire Naked Gun series? Probably one of funniest series in cinema history.

"Take him out of town and finnish the JOB!"
"But what about dinner?"
"Kronk..."
"Desert?"
"All right, desert..."
"And coffee?"
"All right, a quick cup of coffe, THEN TAKE HIM OUT OF TOWN AND FINNISH THE JOB!!!"

Naked Gun too is probably the funniest movie series ever.

I like the time when the huge missle runs into a fireworks factory and then Neilson turns around to the gathering crowed saying "There's nothing to see here, continue on." as the fireworks explode in the background with people running out of the building.

Hermione692 12-02-2003 14:17

I absolutley love the Ice Age :D
Emperor's new groove was great too!
I think this one is called something like "mad about mambo" or something like that, most people haven't even heard of it so i'd say that's underrated,
bye bye:)

Marc P. 12-02-2003 18:33

Anything Mel Brooks :p

Blazing Saddles, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, etc. etc.

great stuff no one talks about anymore.

Mullet 12-02-2003 19:00

To quote Spaceballs (and a huge inside joke between my friends): BARF!!! How Mel Brooks can get one word over so well and have it be so funny I will never know.

Another underrated film: Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie.

"Nanu"
"Hi there!"

Classic.

Little Lee132 12-02-2003 20:47

I dunno I think the Breakfast Club was a pretty sweet movie, I don't know if it's underrated though...

AH I got one Rock & Roll High School, definetly a sweet movie but it was really underrated, it's from the 80's I think but it was still a sweet movie.

OneAngryDaisy 21-02-2003 22:39

Anne George 23-02-2003 11:37

The most underrated movie ever has to be one that 9 out of 10 of you who dont personally know me have never even heard of.....Santa VS The Snowman.....its a great movie....by the same person as Olive the Other Reindeer...which you probably havent heard of either

Ash 23-02-2003 14:37

Pi, Evil Dead 2, Soulkeeper, and a few other movies which I cant qite recall at this moment.

BTW, all Sam Raimi movies are pretty dang good.

jzampier 23-02-2003 14:48

First off The turtles cartoons were cool when I was a kid but the movies we're great! And I'm not sure which station is making it but yes there WILL be a new cgi Ninja Turtles which is 'darker and closer to the original comic books.' And there are plans for the making of a 4th that's right 4th Ninja Tutle movie.

As for my movie I pick : Back To the Future 2 and for that matter 1 and 3 as well.

Jonathan M. 23-02-2003 19:23

Oh yeah and by the way other movies I thought didn't get enough credit:

The Faculty, Space Balls, TMNT 1- 3, Gremlins 1- 2, Monkey Bone, and more but I don't really feel like naming any more.

Oh and btw Phantom menace was pretty bad. But the worst movie ever would have to be the Childs Play Movies. My god they were crappy. But I say this probably because I was afraid of them as a child. LoL. See ya.

SpamDan@GaTech 23-02-2003 20:55

I've got 3 movies that I thought of for most underrated:

1) Boondock Saints - Everyone I show it to loves it, but most people haven't even heard of it.
2) Empire Records - Already mentioned, but gotta give it some more props.
3) Short Circuit - Seeing as this is a ROBOTICS forum, I must say that this is the best robotics movie ever, and most people laugh when I say it is one of my top 3 movies.

"Who knows where thoughts come from, they just appear"
"What's with today, today?"
